Saw Leprechaun 3.

Warwick Davis plays the titular character, a grotesque version of an Irish leprechaun protective of his wish-granting pot of gold. He does magic and beats up big people with his shillelagh and is probably considered racist towards the Irish.

The movie doesn't have much in terms of story beyond an excuse to set up various interactions between people in a Las Vegas casino and Warwick Davis's magical gnome,

The cast isn't too bad and has some charming performances and fun characters. The best of them is definitely Davis' rhyming leprechaun who is funny and full of evil glee.

All in all a pretty forgettable but vaguely enjoyable comedy horror which does better with its jokes than its scares.

Shield for Murder (1954)

A pulp fiction novel made into a movie. A police detective on a downward mental spiral, goes crooked and becomes a brutal maniac. Some of the scenes seemed over the top, especially during the last 20 minutes or so, but an enjoyable thriller, nonetheless.

The word "fast" used in that context is slang for a party-girl/easy-lay type.

I watched Banshees of Inisherin

I quite liked it :) It's a slow boiling drama / comedy about two guys (Colin and Brendan) on an island off the coast of Ireland in the 20s.. and their failing friendship. Colin Farrel plays the lead character Padraic who lives with his sister (played by Kerry Condon) and has an ex-best friend in Colm played by Brendan Gleeson. Farrel does most of the heavy lifting in terms of acting, but Gleeson and Condon are also very good and so is the rest of the cast playing the smaller roles, although I will say I found a certain Dominic slightly annoying.

It's nice to see Colin Farrel play well in a movie that's actually good. I enjpyed it and also enjoyed the locations. I would love to spend some time on that beach outside Colm's house.

I'd rate it 7,5 out of 10 or, I guess, a 3,75 out of 5.

After Yang.

I liked it.

Speaking of Colin Farrell.

Cats (2019)
We went to see the stage play over the weekend so we decided to watch this after. Goddamn, I knew it wasn't well received, but even that didn't prepare me for how awful this was. It was just, I don't know, gross. Uncanny valley unpleasant. Awkward. Embarrassing. I feel bad for everyone involved, except the director who sounds like he was a real asshole to the VFX people.

This has been on our "bad movies to riff on" list for years, I think it's finally time.

Wish us luck.

"stressed" is just "desserts" spelled backwards

Port of New York (1949)

A crime thriller about an organized criminal gang, stealing a shipment of pharmaceutical opium on route to New York City via passenger ship. Presented in a semi-documentary style and featuring Yul Brynner (with a full head of hair) in his first film role. Several moments throughout the film were predictable, so there weren't any surprises, but it was still a worthwhile noir thriller.

I can stomach a bad movie, but when me and my wife turned on Cats for movie night, we weren't quite prepared for the extreme level of awfulness. We actually turned it off, truly a rare occasion, so I've only seen the first 10-15 minutes or so.

Gellical cats? Jellycal?

Don't worry, it only gets worse from there. Just be thankful if you missed the scene with Rebel Wilson eating anthropomorphic cockroaches.

Apparently "Jellicle cats" is a term from the T.S. Eliot poems that the play is based on. It's supposed to be a corruption of "dear little cats" but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around how "dear little cats" could sound anything like "Jellicle cats" in any dialect of English.

^Thanks for the jellicle explanation, Jans :)

I just watched the 1995 movie Safe starring Julianne Moore.

It's a mystery/ drama about Carol, an upper middle class woman who seems relatively void of personality. She mysteriously starts getting sick and eventually think it has to do with various chemicals, like exhaust fumes or bug spray.

What's fun about this movie is it doesn't give you an explanation for what you're seeing. Instead, we're kinda left to figure it out ourselves and I'm pretty sure my take may differ a lot from someone else's.

My take was this:

Spoiler
I think she probably has some disease, but not due to chemical sensitivity. She moves to a cult-run sanatorium, yet but we don't see her improve. In fact her health seems to further deteriorate. To me, it's a movie about how someone with an undiagnosed health problems and who doesn't get help from medical professionals slide into an alternative trap/scam run by a cult. I think her kind of void personality promotes this because having health problems finally gives her something to define herself by and, while the movie doesn't let us know what she's actually thinking, it does seem like she lacks critical thinking skills that might have made her reconsider.

All in all an interesting movie. I doubt younger audiences would like it much as it's an open ended slow burn, but as someone who likes the topic it explores in general, I liked it.
