Quote from: Rubber Soul on Jan 29, 2023, 01:40 PMI just saw the Room. Horrible. One of the cast members got some of the others togather and they have a mockumentary "Where Are They Now" going. It's hilarious.

The Room is what made me realize I loved terrible movies. I've owned my DVD copy since 2008 and my friend group used to have watch parties that were always a hoot. My sister was lucky enough to meet Tommy Wiseau at a screening in Chicago.

Quote from: Guybrush on Jan 29, 2023, 01:47 PMTommy Wiseau's movie from the 2000s? Because that's pure gold

That's the one... Oh, hi, Mark. :D

Oh man, the whole thing is funny, but I think the first 10-15 minutes or so when your brain is just trying to make sense of it.. And it's just so unbelievably stupid. It is great. I'm pretty sure it's the finest unintentional comedy I know of.

Indeed
Such is the power of The Room that me and some people close to me quote it to each other on a regular basis, even though none of them have actually seen it

Yesterday was the first time I ever saw it and it was a treat. Before that I had mainly only seen part of the "Oh hi, Mark" scene. For much of it, it seemed like going to see a porn movie and a bad one at that.

It was charming but not brilliant.

I agree with this.

I saw The Menu which was a neat little thriller and entertaining from start to finish. It's a little ridiculous, something that could've made it a mess in someone else's hands, but Ralph Fiennes does enough good acting to put the rest of the cast to shame and makes it work.

I don't wanna spoil any more, but watch it yourself if you want some violent fun.

I thought that was a pretty good one too.

Moon Zero Two (1969)

I watched this one a couple of days ago. A fairly amusing sci-fi flick about an astronaut who is working from the moon, salvaging various items of debris/junk from space and accepts an offer from a sleazy & ruthless businessman to maneuver a small, valuable asteroid into crashing on the surface of the moon, so they can recover the contents of the asteriod. The film is a mix of sci-fi, drama, action, & comedy. A lot of the props & clothing reminded me of the 'UFO' and 'Space 1999' TV shows from the late 60's and early to mid 70's and I suspect that those shows probably used some of the same props & clothing. A bit of music-related trivia that I noticed during the closing credits was that the theme song for the film was sung by Julie Driscoll.

Scared to Death (1947)

A low-budget mystery/horror flick (filmed in color) from 1947. A young dead woman, laying on a slab in a morgue, tells the tale of how she ended up there. Part mystery, part horror, part comedy, it's somewhat amusing but not quite good enough to fit into the "so bad it's good" category even with a strange hypnotist, his midget sidekick, and a creepy figure in a green mask added to the plot. Bela Lugosi must hold some type of record for appearing in the most mediocre or awful movies in the history of film.

Sensation Hunters (1945)

I watched this one under the alternate title of "Club Paradise." A young, attractive woman from a dysfunctional family, falls in love with a handsome cad, leaves home and heads down the road to ruin.

I just rewatched this gem after being reminded of ny love for it in the top 10 thread:

As far as movies go, this one's pretty insane and absolutely wonderful. It's a musical fantasy comedy that defies explanation. You'd simply have to see it.

It was directed by Richard Elfman and also features his musical brother Danny in a brief role as the devil. It also features the other knights of Oingo Boingo in addition to the rest of its wonderful cast, the best of which is probably Marie-Pascale Elfman as Susan "Frenchie" Hercules.

Many of the jokes of the movie were considered offensive back then and it gained its fame as a midnight movie. These jokes haven't gotten less offensive the last 40+ years, so it's probably not for the easily offended. However, if you have high comedic tolerance and think a celebration of the absolutely absurd sounds like fun, then you should check this out.

PS! I've always seen the B/W version as Elfman, I assume, originally intended.

Richard is reputedly still working on the sequel to this. Hopefully we get to see it some day.

Haven't seen it but the running time fits into my daily workout routine, so I might give it a go this morning.

You know, even as a pretty huge Oingo Boingo fan I've never seen Forbidden Zone all the way through. Gotta put that on the list.

i'm a very casual fan but i saw them in the 80's and the kids were fully bonkers

That's awesome, they were an excellent live band. Makes me wish I wasn't six years old when they broke up, haha.

Maniac (1934)

I've known about this one for 40 years or so but never got around to watching it until yesterday. About as ridiculous and inept as it gets, even for a cheap exploitation film. It did make me laugh several times, so it wasn't a total failure of a flick. It's a story of a brilliant, mad scientist/doctor pushing his young assistant to his mental breaking point and the disastrous results that follow.
