Quote from: DJChameleon on May 31, 2023, 10:18 AMIn order to do anything close to that you'd have to just film yourselves making the jokes/roasts without the footage being scene but the audio might be okay to play I think. I've seen some Twitch streamers get away with doing it that way.

Speaking of Twitch streamers one of my faves got banned and she went on TikTok and we watched Get Out together. She actually showed the movie on screen though. Generally when she does a watch party type thing. We have to follow along just by watching it ourselves and start when she does. Idk what she got banned for though but she made lemonade out of lemons.

I love bad b movies but more so horror ones than regular ones. Idk how long I could last watching that rataloing one. Rough

Yeah, I've also seen movie commentary Youtubers who use movie footage, might just edit together a highlight compilation of the best bits of our commentary and hope for the best with copyright.

I follow some people who use Patreon and invite viewers to private patron-only streams on Vimeo where they play movies, both audio and video. I wonder if doing that but posting a link here in the secret forum instead of behind Patreon would be something we could get away with. Would probably require a lot of setup. But if we could figure it out I'd love to have movie nights with you all.

There used to be a platform called rabbit I think. I will have to look into it. It was great for creating watch parties with your friends.

I was this cool the whole time.

I saw A Bronx Tale.

It feels like a movie I should've seen ages ago, but I just never came across it.

The story about how it came to be is actually rather compelling, so I'll give a quick summary. It is based on an autobiographical one-man show by actor Chazz Palminteri that he started in the 80s. Robert DeNiro went to see it and was so impressed, he wanted to turn into a movie. The two men made a gentleman's agreement about turning it into a movie which included Chazz playing the role of gangster Sonny and Bob playing the role of our protagonist's father. The movie was directed by DeNiro (his first) and came out in 1993.

The story itself is a coming of age story centered on a young italian american who grows up next to crime. I don't wanna give too much away, but of course it's a gangster movie and has some of the usual gangster ingredients in it and racism is also a central theme in the last half.

It's actually a very good movie. The actors are convincing and Bob and Chazz shine in their respective roles. The story is engaging and fun and suitably gritty when called for. Overall, I prefer it to some other gangster movies, f.ex. The Untouchables. It does have the feel of a classic, which is why it seems weird to me that it didn't show up on my radar earlier.

By the way, that Face-off style poster is not a good representation of the movie

@Guybrush It's a good one. I saw it in the theater and have seen it several times since. It's actually the first thing I ever saw Michael Imperioli in. I agree about the poster. Between the face off and the kid running from the explosion, it looks like some kind of crime thriller.

Cocaine Bear (2023)

Blah. This is a horror comedy movie that is not scary or funny or wildly off the rails entertaining. It's only about an hour and a half long but it feels more like three hours. Several usually good actors were also wasted in the endeavor.

I think the filmmakers were so excited about having such a great title that they forgot to put any effort into making an entertaining movie.

I went to the first showing on Friday at noon. I feel like they should've had Spider-Gwen featured more prominently on the posters. It was pretty much more her story than Miles.

I loved that they did a recap so if you didn't see the first one that's no problem you won't be lost. The only thing they leave out about Miles that you would only know from the first one or the video game is that he has the power to go invisible and also has this electricity type of power.

They did a great job of tossing in a few jokes/commentary that would resonate with adults taking their kids to see it. The kids won't get those jokes at all.

^Nice! I loved the previous one :) Looking forward to see more animated spider man.

It definitely looked a little gimmicky from the trailer, which made me skeptical.

This one's been on my to-do list for years and years. Finally I got to see it and really, there was no reason to wait so long.

Come and See from 1985 is a movie set in 1943 Belarus and gives us a glance at the treatment of russian civilians at the hands of nazi soldiers. It was inspired by survivors accounts so I assume the sort of stuff we see is something that actually took place and perhaps was even common. We follow a boy / young man who becomes a partisan soldier at the start of the movie and then quickly finds himself in a world torn by war. It is a bleak movie, but not always so. The first third or so especially has some occasional comedy and fun characters. As the movie progresses, things go from bad to worse.

Something that is amazing about this film is lots of truly striking imagery and just crazy scenes. Just on the strength of those things, the movie is riveting. Add to that fine acting and the movie's ability to convey a sort of atmosphere and existentialism and dread that would be hard to put in words, it definitely earns its classic status. From the very start, you know you're watching something special.

It's also a movie you couldn't make today. Especially in the second half, there's sometimes just mayhem on the screen with lots of people, things blowing up, animals being bothered, children crying. It seems like a dangerous set at times, but the realism is great. Unfortunately, there is some animal cruelty in this movie, but at least it's not as sadistic as it is in, say, the exploitative Cannibal Holocaust.

I'm not sure I'll ever watch it again, but I can't recommend it enough to those who can stomach a bleak WW2 film.

I saw the 2017 restored version which really has lovely pictures. I know this restoration won some prizes, so it's probably the definite version.

Mac and Me (1988)

We got home from dinner last night and the mister was in the mood to watch a real stinker. He couldn't think of anything so it was on me to suggest something. I scanned Wikipedia's "worst movies ever" list and asked him if he'd ever seen Mac and Me. He gave me the exact response I had hoped for.

"Never heard of it."

If you're not familiar, Mac and Me is basically an E.T. ripoff that is infamous for its blatant and shameless product placement for McDonald's. It was an absolute joy watching the mister's expressions turn from mild confusion to disgust to being utterly dumbfounded at this "film" as it turned from shitty but mostly seemingly innocuous knockoff kids movie to a straight up McDonald's commercial. It absolutely made my night the moment where it really sank in and Mr. Waffles said, with more disdain than I've ever heard that man express:

"Oh my god, is that why they call it 'MAC' and me?!"

We've seen so many horrible films together that it's actually really rare that anything really breaks him these days, so that was certainly an unforgettable experience.

^Holy crap, I've only seen pics from Mac and Me and it looks atrocious.

I saw this GREAT movie yesterday:

I believe it's from 1994 and that it's Todd Solondz breakthrough movie. I've seen his movie Happiness a couple of times and am very fond of it. It's tragically funny and goes to places where few filmmakers dare tread, even tackling pedophilia pretty head on. Hence, I was fairly sure that Welcome to the Dollhouse was going to be tragically funny as well as controversial.

My assumption was pretty much spot on. This is awkward pre-teen comedy at its most awkward. For some reason I don't quite understand, there's something funny about watching some poor innocent person never catching a break 😄 Dawn Wiener, our protagonist, kinda fits that bill. Everything she does seems to backfire and any victory she might find seems short lived. Heather Matarazzo was 11 when she played this, about the same age as her character, and she does a great job. A fun cast supports her.

I'm also impressed with how Solondz seems to "get" a certain type of very young person. A lot of these awkward interactions feel very genuine, even though they're very weird.

I don't think it's for everyone, but I loved it and haven't laughed this much watching a movie in a long time.

Today I saw The Lives of Others from 2006.

It's a german thriller that takes place in socialist and totalitarian East Germany at the start of the 80s. It's a world where the eyes and ears of the Stasi secret police can be anywhere through surveillance and anyone can be an informant. It's a world where making the wrong comment during a lunch break can lead to grueling interrogations and torture.

I don't want to spoil the movie, but suffice to say it's well crafted, engaging and rightly considered a classic. I also greatly appreciate a glimpse into what life might have been like in East Germany before the wall came down.

I think most people would enjoy it so it's a pretty safe recommendation. For me, it plays it a bit straight. I want more weirdness in my movies 🙂 hence, I'd rate it:

I'm game for Welcome to the Dollhouse. Loved Happiness and a film about a girl's awkward upbringing will be easy to sell to the other half
