@DJChameleon

Do your parents/grandparents/anyone in your family (Caribbean family) of the older generations go by their middle names rather than their first names?

There is a reason I'm asking BTW.

I'm the only one that does but what's the reason for asking?

I was this cool the whole time.

At my mom's funeral my aunt said in her speech that in the days when my mom was born, Caribbean moms (my nan was from there) did strange things like using middle names instead of first names then made a joke anout how my nan did one better with my mom because she went by another name completely for all of her life, it wasn't on her birth certificate. Then recently I just found that my nan went by her middle name and I learned what her actual first name was. (I didn't know that the name we all knew my mom by wasn't part of her name at all until I was in my early 20s).

I've asked a couple of Jamaicans and they said its very common, said they're called garden names. So I thought I'd ask you as well.

That's new to me and maybe only specific to Jamaicans. I'm gonna ask my cousin and aunt if they have heard about that. Maybe I'm just out of the loop.

I was this cool the whole time.

Well my nan wasn't from Jamaica so I doubt it. Let me know what you hear Big D.

Okay so my cousin didn't know but he's around my age but my aunt that's a few years older says yes that's a common thing that happens in the West Indies.

Cheers, did think it was an older gen thing.

Nice one.

My waste of skin father's name was Kevin Anthony, but my mam always called him Tony. His sisters though called him Kevin. I call him cunt. Sorry sorry, my mistake: dead cunt.

One of my uncles' name was Brendan, but he called himself Bob, as did everyone else, because his name was Brendan O'Byrne = BOB. True story.

Note: for clarification, neither were Jamaican.

One of my granddads was from Waterford. I've never met him. But I know that he was an absolutely massive cunt. A drunk, abusive piece of shit. I daren't ask any family about him for fear of upsetting anyone.

Noticing a bit of a trend here 🤐

To be perfectly fair to the arsehole, he wasn't a drunk. In fact, he was a tee-totaller, or as we call them here, a Pioneer (?). Didn't stop him being an abusive cunt though. I suppose had he been a drunk there might have been some mitigation in that case (not really) but no, a self-professed Holy Joe who went to Mass on Sundays, beat his breast and then went home and beat his wife. Scumbag. May he rot in Hell, if it exists.

Listening to Funhouse by The Stooges.
