The Man They Could Not Hang (1939)

:3stars:

B&W horror/sci-fi film about a scientist who develops an apparatus and procedure to resuscitate people who have recently died. His first experiment using the device and procedure on a living human volunteer, is interrupted by the local police, who charge him with murder.

I Saw the TV Glow (2024)

Finally watched this after months of my friends raving about it. It's great that movies like this are coming out these days, even though it's an allegory to being transgender and not about being trans exactly, it depicts such a strong pathos for the experiences of queer people, those in denial or repression, and especially those who know that freeing their true self is the right thing to do and feel the fear of taking that leap.

I feel like the movie may have been more impactful on me personally if I had lived in the closet for a longer time, but it definitely still hit hard in the way it nailed the portrayal of how it feels to live with dysphoria; it really is horror, slow moving dread, a mundane, ever present feeling that you're just existing on autopilot, knowing that something is wrong, that this isn't how living is meant to feel.

Beautiful film, and I hope even those who don't know the feelings and experiences this movie is allegorical to firsthand can still watch it and understand that in the end being trans/queer is just how we are; it's not a consciously felt feeling nor is it something rooted in our personal morals or values. There is constant pressure on trans people nowadays to engage in 'debate' and make some kind of philosophical case for our existence to prove that our identity is legitimate, and I'm glad this movie instead went for a depiction of our kind of experience in a way that didn't get bogged down in clinical, concrete details and showed the viewer how it feels rather than telling them what it is.

I'm so very glad I watched it.

Edge of Eternity (1959)

:3.5stars:

Late 1950's crime-thriller about a Deputy Sheriff in a small town, on the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, trying to solve a mysterious murder in the town. The film had the look and feel of an Alfred Hitchcock movie from that era, which gave it a typical Hitchcock vibe, but he wasn't involved in the film as far as I know.

We streamed it on Youtube, if it's not there for you then it's probably a country-based licensing thing unfortunately.

If you can't end up finding a way to watch it, I've actually recently been getting into having viewing parties on Discord so maybe if there's enough interest I could host something like that, for this movie and other movies/albums etc.

Avast there, matey!  :) Keep scannin' yon horizon for me new journal on pirates, or I'll keelhaul ye and send ye to Davy Jones' Locker! (Though quite what one of the Monkees has to do with sailors I don't understand...)

That's a really good movie.

I've seen a bunch of movies that I should comment on.

Like Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness. They kinda hold up, at least for me.

I saw Longlegs, very nice! Nosferatu was great. I saw Daddy's Home 2.. Why?! I had a chuckle or two.

Tomorrow, I'll probably see Smile 2. I'll let you know what I think 🙂

I thought the first Smile was just ok. The ending kinda sucked though.

Interested in your take on Nosferatu. Is it a remake of the old black-and-white silent movie, or just a way of differentiating yet another movie about Dracula?
