The Witch (2015) - 8/10


Rewatched it last night. Watching the whole family slowly turn against each other because of evil was intense. Great acting all around.

Rewatched Everything Everywhere All At Once because it was on Amazon prime and my wife quickly fell asleep the last time we saw it.



Still a very enjoyable watch the second time around. I'm impressed that this movie got made and with such a great result. I mean, they must have filmed so many scenes and there must've been so much editing to get to a final cut. Of course, editing was one of the many Oscars it won.

It's fun, sweet and all over the place.. very well casted. Jamie Lee Curtis especially makes me laugh in most of the scenes she's in.

It's a little busy for my tastes, but still a joy. If you haven't seen it, bump it up on your list of movie priorities 🙂

In terms of how clever and well made it is, it probably does deserve more, but 4 stars is more a reflection of my enjoyment of it.

If there was a 4.25, I'd give it 😄 it's good, but no Forbidden Zone.

Saw this a couple of days ago:



We watched it on Amazon prime basically because the description made it seem like it was probably inspired by The Silence of the Lambs and I've kinda missed those kind of thrillers.

This one isn't terribly original and the opening reminds me of Dirty Harry. A young, female beat cop ends up helping an FBI agent track down a mass murderer. It's decently acted and entertaining.

A thing I didn't like was the killer, but I'll hide my comment in a spoiler.

To Catch a Killer

The killer seems a little Ted Kaczynzki inspired and at odds with modern society, but we dont actually get into the nitty gritty of why he murders people and, despite everything, seems like he could be a nice guy.

He's well casted with Ralph Ineson doing a fine job, but there's none of the menace that you get from the aforementioned movies.

So a decent crime thriller that would probably be safe for your parents to watch.

Fitzcarraldo is Werner Herzog's epic about an Irish entrepreneur who, being in Peru during a rubber boom, decides to claim and exploit a seemingly unreachable plot containing millions of rubber trees. He can't take a boat up the river where it is due to violent rapids, but plans to take the boat up a neighbouring river and then drag the boat over the hill that separates the two rivers (quite a feat).

This movie has a crazy production history. For one thing, while Herzog was inspired by a real story, the boat used in the movie was 10 times heavier than the historical one and Werner didn't want to use special effects, so.. how do you make a movie about pulling a 320 ton boat over a hill? You do it and you film it.

From Wikipedia: The film production was an incredible ordeal, and famously involved moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill. This was filmed without the use of special effects. Herzog believed that no one had ever performed a similar feat in history, and likely never will again, calling himself "Conquistador of the Useless".

Furthermore, the original star got dysentery and got replaced with, yup, the acting world's most antagonistic individual, the constant tantrum that was Klaus Kinski. He'd get into several dust fights just about every day, scream in people's faces and some of the tribespeople who play in the movie offered Werner to kill Kinski. He said no. By the way, people offering to kill him is a recurring theme through Kinski's career.

Mick Jagger was supposed to play Kinski's character's assistant, but had to tour instead.

The movie is kinda slow and the acting felt a little off. I honestly think a large part of it was just a weird English dub that frequently felt off.

Klaus Kinski mostly seems batshit insane with his yellow, unkempt hair and big blue frog eyes. He has his dead eyed, bulging stare that is put to frequent use throughout and which makes him seem even more like a nutcase. In addition, he feels like a character void if any real passion or morality, a bit like Kinski himself.

It's really cool how they made it and the boat pulling etc. is indeed impressive. However, I wouldn't recommend it in a general sense. Movie / cinema buffs might like it. You know who you are.

As far as bank heist scenes go, that movie has my all-time favorite one.

Spontaneously went to a late showing of Sofia Coppola's Priscilla on Saturday.  Everything else was sold out.  It was poetically directed and filmed as expected with a Sofia film, but unfortunately so boring and uneventful we took turns drifting to sleep.  Possibly 80% of the film was Elvis coaxing the much younger Priscilla to take pills and nod off in his velveted blacked-out bedroom.  Maybe that's why I got so sleepy.

The two lead actors were fine and Jacob Elordi a dead ringer for Elvis in both appearance and mannerisms.  But that was about it, imho.

I am not ashamed to say I'll be watching that just to look at Jacob Elordi.

Saw Nightswim yesterday. I was in the mood for a horror movie in theaters but was treated to a basic jump scare fest.

I wish they focused on the lore more. They could have squeezed a sequel out of the short film that was made into a feature film.

The short film this movie was based on was awesome in comparison. They pretty much remade the short film in the first act of this movie but they didn't know how to stretch the concept out to a proper film.

If they are gonna make a haunting movie. You have to make us care about the characters or the tradegy that created the hauntings in the first place. They failed to do that. There were some great underwater shots though especially in the third act.

We finally saw this. Well, I did. My wife fell asleep. Wes Anderson's Asteroid City:



Its not one of his best, but I liked it a lot. And in terms of being Wes Andersony with the carefully designed sets and shots, this movie is great for all who love that. More than his other films, this one doesn't look real. The sky is turquoise and the dirt is a homogeneous near-orange. Everything looks intentional down to minute details, unlike the real world. But then it also has meta layer where our actors generally play two roles, a character and the actor who plays that character as Asteroid City is the fictional story inside the story. So I find that also fits with the look of everything.

There isn't too much of a plot going on. It's more tossing a bunch of characters together and seeing them interact in that kinda detached way where they say they have emotions, but don't quite express them beyond words. Wes is capable of having real, emotional moments in his movies, but this feels more like a comedy and I quite like Wes' quirky sense of humour.

The cast for this film is amazing. So many old collaborators and some new ones too (afaik) like Bryan Cranston and Tom Hanks. The ones I liked the most were actually some of the smaller roles, like Matt Dillon as a mechanic (kinda nice to see him again), Maya Hawke as a teacher and Tilda Swinton as an astronomer.

All in all, it couldn't keep my wife awake, but I rather enjoyed it. Might be better on the second watch too, I figure.
