If noone speaks up, you have a much more toxic environment. If you flip it and you have 9 awful opinions and only 1 to speak up against it, you have an even more toxic environment.

This is just a metaphor, of course.

i also think it's good for people to hear from someone who brutally delivers the message of how profoundly ideals that are so frequently heralded like democracy and liberalism have failed us

if there's a news thread it's occasionally going to be accompanied with deep nihilism but this shit isn't working

i also think people should consider whether it's the idea or the novelty to of the idea that offends because i'm pretty sure people on here have argued in favor of keeping the police and military armed without a single accusation of inciting violence

Quote from: Guybrush on May 05, 2023, 12:14 AMI'm the worst at this because I have basically no social media presence. I boycotted facebook, instagram, etc. after the facebook whistleblower case. I then boycotted Musk's twitter. This is the only social media I have left!

why do things always have to grow

growth is usually toxic

I'll have a bit of free time this weekend if recording that intro video is still on the table. I might have a couple more questions about what I should say and the aesthetic of the video, but if everything goes smoothly I can have it done by the end of Monday.

And if anyone else wants to add their footage I can easily edit it together of course.

"stressed" is just "desserts" spelled backwards

Unfortunately, I've found that this forum frequently leans toward your second paragraph when it comes to race.

Not what I'm saying, but the dismissive sarcasm was expected.

I think there are levels, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but anyone who wants to say something which may be considered not only controversial but offensive should probably think about how that is going to affect not only everyone else here, but the atmosphere of the forum in general. I'm not saying necessarily don't say what you want to say, and I'm not trying to muzzle anyone (can't get the damn thing open anyway) but it would be nice if these thoughts could be framed in a more acceptable way. Even putting it in a lighter-hearted manner. I don't want to keep coming back to it, but the anger in that post was pretty scary and I'd rather not read such things here. If that makes me an idealist or a stupid optimist, or even an ostrich, so be it. I'd just like everyone to remember this isn't a vacuum, and the words you use have power, so like Spiderman, please use that power responsibly.

Can we extend the time limit to edit posts before it leaves a notification that you edited it to about 5 minutes?

You've got to be lightning quick atm so it can't be longer than about 10 seconds.

Only God knows.

Can you clarify what you are saying? That the guy who cares deeply about the history of black Americans and fought for equality of chances in the school where he worked (if I'm getting the story right) is a racist?

I'm saying there's a certain amount of casual racism here and people do not push back against it. I was reluctant to even bring it up, because I knew dismissive sarcasm would likely be the response.

well it's mighty white of you to speak up against it now

I too think that race and those discussions aren't treated as delicately as I think they should be. Or race comes up when there's no reason to as far as I can see. We've discussed this before already. I would like to have an atmosphere here that is respectful and welcoming to people of any race.

i haven't met many black people who are like i want to spend more time with white liberals who delicately pick their words

no offence but that sounds like youre afraid of them or something

I haven't met many people in general who want to spend time in a place that's casually hostile to them.

then they should feel at home here then because there isn't even remote hostility towards blacks here and never has been unless we count your lack of respect for their ability to spot racism which is typical of northern liberals who seem to think black people need their protection under all circumstances like a mother that makes her children carry umbrellas on sunny days
