Quote from: Wonky on Mar 13, 2025, 05:18 PMI just saw on TV that in the run up to St Patrick's day they have installed a big round portal in NYC and another in Dublin so people can look at and talk to each other in real time.  Mostly its being used to shake booties in each others faces.

You know what happened last time, don't you?

Yeah they did it before and - shock! Horror! - people misused it.

But I'm sure it will be totally different on a day when people are traditionally drunk and staggering around looking for a fight!

Ah yes, the traditional and ancient Celtic symbol of a machinegun-toting Leprechaun! Where's the "Brits Out!" slogan?  ::)

QuoteWASHINGTON, D. C. - Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday welcomed Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin for an early St. Patrick's day breakfast at the vice-presidential residence, where the trans-Atlantic politicos bonded on socks, family vacations and the Appalachian trail.

Vance joked that the event was an occasion for his wife, Usha, to wear a pair of green slacks she'd had in her closet for years. He said he wore a pair of shamrock-themed socks to welcome Ireland's head-of-state to the United States, urging Martin to defend his sartorial choice to President Donald Trump if his boss noticed them when the pair visited the Oval Office later in the day.

"The President is a very big fan of conservative dress," said Vance. "This is an important part of cementing the Irish American relationship, and that's the only reason I'm wearing these socks."
Nothing more endearing to the Irish than a plastic paddy showing off his shamrock socks in an act of solidarity. This guy is a natural born diplomat.

I have to say that as a proud Irishman, I find that very much it's your round.

Nobody is prouder to be Irish than an American.

I think most of us treat St Patrick's Day, like many other holidays, as just another excuse to drink and eat. It made me wonder, because I hadn't looked it up for a while, alcoholism rates per capita.

Surprisingly, we're #5! We're 31st in education and 28th in democracy, so I'm happy to see we're excelling at something!  Surprisingly, South Korea has the same alcoholism rates per capita that we do (I would have never guessed, but I'm largely unfamiliar with South Korea on any deep level). And it would appear American women are actually more alcoholic per capita than Russian women (we're #1 per capita for women alcoholics).

There is a bit of that of course but Plastic Paddyism is definitely a thing with Americans. I found out recently that more Americans are of German or English descent than Irish. But you wouldn't think that based off of how they go on.

Sure. Gotta pump that stuff up to drive the sales of corned beef and Guinness.

The underlined doesn't surprise me based on how much discrimination there was towards the Irish when they immigrated here in the mid 1800s. Some of the anti-Irish cartoon propaganda examples:

I have a decent amount of Irish ancestry and in my experience,  there's 0 distinction between Irish American culture and celebrating St Paddy's day.  Everything we supposedly know about Irish culture can largely be summed up by looking at the design on a box of Lucky Charms.

I mostly blame the city of Boston.

Kind of even worse that JD Vance is like that though,  given he's a mountain dew swigging Scots-Irish hick who is from Ohio but spent summers in Appalachia and for some reason supposedly bases a large part of his book on that.  Just  another poor cultureless white American searching for an identity that isn't the default setting.

I can honestly relate.  Spent my entire freshman year pretending to be like an actual Italian with a fake accent and everything(which I think just ended up sounding hispanic). I don't think it was that convincing of an act, lol.  It was lucky that I moved back to Florida the next year so I took the opportunity to drop the act and cut my losses.

Good ole cliff notes to St Patty's day.

I was this cool the whole time.

As a native Irishman I must object!

THIS is "the usual way of doing things in Ireland"!

And FYI, every Irish person knows Saint Patrick wasn't Irish, he was Roman, but captured by Niall of the Ten-woops-one-escaped-Nine Hostages and brought over here as a salve. Sorry, slave. Well, maybe salve, who knows what he did with his hostages? Niall was an odd one.
