Title: RIP
Post by: jadis on Apr 23, 2023, 11:43 AM
We need one of those...

Kicking things off with a true entertainment industry institution,

Dame Edna/Barry Humphries
 (https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-13225944)

This is a good piece
 (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/22/theater/barry-humphries-dead.html)
QuoteSo fully did Mr. Humphries animate Edna that he was at continued pains to point out that he was neither a female impersonator in the conventional sense nor a cross-dresser in any sense.

Very sharp-tongued

Martin Amis
Title: Re: RIP
Post by: Lisnaholic on May 21, 2023, 02:37 PM
^ You are ahead of me by (*checks posting times*) 12 hours.

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/20/us/british-author-martin-amis-dead-at-73/index.html

Him and his dad both had huge reputations in Britain - the events of their lives turning up on the front pages of newspapers, which is not that common for authors.

I've read a couple of Martin Amis books, both of them clever, stylish, kind of knowingly using or playing with literary conventions, so you might call them "mannered" I think. Also very contemporary, as both Amis guys were known for identifying new social trends as they happened. Great books? Not really. That's why MA doesn't have one always-mentioned masterpiece, the way some authors do. None-the-less, a really engaging writer: I think the piece by him I most enjoyed was a long newspaper article about Dinosaurs. It was full of original ideas, neat turns of phase, and I remember thinking, "This isn't newspaper stuff, this is literature."

Two Little Boys is a fantastic song but I associate it with RH. Someone else should record it and then I can associate it with them.

I'd go with Bob Dylan. Johnny Cash probably could have done a good job but too late now.

The only song I know him for is "Margaritaville" and I always thought of him as a goofy novelty act with an inexplicable cult following.

I would've guessed he was a multimillionaire maybe a couple dozen times over but the fact that he was a billionaire is mind-boggling to me.

Right there with you. I live in a neighborhood full of older people and have seen the cult of Buffett firsthand. No matter how much I am immersed in that suburban white normie environment I am no closer to understanding his appeal.

Aw, that sucks. I really like a lot of his music, both Spooky Tooth and his first two solo albums. Also as an enthusiast of the much maligned keytar, he was super early to embracing them.

I'm sorry to report that Denny Laine died yesterday, in hospital, after a week or more of struggling with a lung disease.

A guy with a great voice who had an enviable resumé, which included both The Moody Blues and Wings. That alone speaks of his musicianship, and here's a catchy single from 1967 that I rate as one of his best compositions - although some might go instead for his co-writer credit for Mull of Kintyre

Don't miss how these clever lyrics at the start fit so neatly into the song:-

I realise - that I've been, - in your eyes, - some kind of fool.
What I do, - what I did:  - stupid fish, - I drank the pool.

Have to admit I was taken aback by that one.

Didn't know he was also a semi-professional poker player.

"I think paying a royalty to a producer or engineer is ethically indefensible. I would like to be paid like a plumber: I do the job and you pay me what it's worth," he wrote. "There's no way I would ever take that much money. I wouldn't be able to sleep."

Always loved that quote by him. I used to know an assistant engineer who worked at CRC in Chicago and he once said that when Steve Albini came into the studio to work, he usually had all of his ideas worked out ahead of time in his mind before they started a recording session. Sometimes he brought a notebook with him but he often knew what he wanted to do and just went to it.

The sound he achieved on The Jesus Lizard's album Goat has probably the best drum production I've heard.

I also like this from PJ Harvey about why she wanted to work with him on Rid of Me:
QuoteI knew I wanted to work with Steve Albini from listening to Pixies records, and hearing the sounds he was getting, which were unlike any other sounds that I'd heard on vinyl. I really wanted that very bare, very real sound. I knew that it would suit the songs. It's like touching real objects or feeling the grain of wood. That's what his sound is like to me. It's very tangible. You can almost feel the room.
