finally watched bugonia, was not quite prepared for that lol. I found it an absolutely miserable experience for large chunks of it, and mostly it just leaves a miserable aftertaste. Which is not a verdict on the quality of the film, obviously, but in the end I found that it didn't offer quite enough to justify sitting through all that. I hated the ending. I'm all for a bit of absurdity or surrealness, but this just took away any kind of emotional depth the story had, and it wasn't surprising or funny enough to really work. The one thing about the film I loved was the portrayal of the conspiracy nut. To come up with someone that monstrously awful and then also manage to keep him human and give him moments like that conversation with the coworker. The film would have worked much better imo if it played more into the uncomfortable ambivalence of having this horrible guy doing horrible things to some woman, but at the same time the guy is disadvantaged and in some ways right (which hits harder if he's a conspiracy nut!) and justly upset, and this woman is a CEO piece of shit. The ending just steamrolls all over that.

My own take on some movies recently mentioned in this thread:-

Interstellar: started well, with what I assume was intended: my confusion between 1930's dust-bowl America and the future. As the story advances into space, it kept me intrigued, even though I understood less and less of what was taking place as the dialogue drifted furthur into the realms of what I suspect is scientific nonsense. Spoiler alert:-

Spoiler
A weak, easily forgettable ending imo, owing far too much to Kubrick's 2001: the Interstellar director seems to have largely copied Kubrick's vision of what happens on the other side of physics.

One Battle After Another: yep, Sean Penn's performance is pretty extraordinary. I hope I'm not prudish about sex and violence in a film, but I didn't like how this movie opened, with the notion that violence is sexy. Still, lots of excitement so far (still haven't finished it) and, during an extended "chase" sequence, an unbroken slab of interesting incidental music (the jazzy piano stuff).

The Substance: I almost never watch a whole movie all the way through in one go. I enjoyed the first half of this, but after pausing it about 3 weeks back, I've felt no urge to continue with it, so something about the characters or premise didn't quite do it for me. Perhaps I'll give it another go as it is spoken of highly here.

What you desire is of lesser value than what you have found.

Little Caesar (1931)

:4stars:

Classic B&W crime film about a small-time thug with big-time ambitions in the crime world. He ruthlessly works his way up the organized crime ladder in pursuit of his twisted dream to "be somebody."

Santo in the Wax Museum (1963)

:3stars:

A low-budget story about a masked Mexican wrestler who fights crime on the side while wearing his wrestling costume. This one is an odd combination of crime, horror, and wrestling but it managed to be as entertaining as it was ridiculous.

Interesting! I hadn't heard about this, but I see it's a remake of Save The Green Planer which is on my to-do list.

@Lisnaholic the last half of The Substance eventually changes tone and gets pretty wild. It might not be for you, but it's definitely an experience 😄

Happiness is a warm manatee

12 monkeys was pretty cool but why was there only like three lines of dialogue spoken by black people they always made a point to have a black person on screen but v rarely did they speak.  the romantic subplot was really forced and awkward as well like whatever

but regardless a really gritty scifi i dug it

bright future in accounting

Circus of Fear (1966)

:3stars:

A circus in England becomes the focal point for a police investigation into an armed robbery at Tower Bridge in London, where a guard was murdered during the heist. Entertaining crime drama with various plot twists and turns. I couldn't find a suitable poster of the film in English but I found a good Italian one which translates as "The Long Knife of London."

"This Etsy-cutesy drama based on the life of Canadian outsider artist Maud Lewis (1903-70) tells the tale of a woman betrayed by her family."
