Happiness is a warm manatee

I thought the first part of Wall-E was relaxing and had a calm atmosphere even though it's about a completely destroyed and ruined planet earth that has clearly gone through horrific, presumably extinction level catastrophe. Does that mean I have no empathy for the destroyed human society and the pain that clearly occurred? I dunno, I just think the silence and sense of gloom and the escapades of this cute little robot give a feeling of calmness. Melancholy can be relaxing.

Again I haven't seen the movie in question but I would assume it's not really very intense. "Relaxing" doesn't always mean "positive, everything is fine". There is nuance I think we can acknowledge here.

After all this commotion about Flow, I had to watch it for myself last night. My wife watched it with me. For most of the movie, it was pretty low-key. Like Noah's Ark without Noah. But there were a couple sad parts to it. But, not to spoil anything, near the end, my poor wife broke out in tears. She used to have dreams of being a vet tech though, and she absolutely loves animals. Admittedly, I was a little choked up too. But I wouldn't say it was any worse than most classic Pixar fare. I'll make no excuses for it, the beginning of Up and the flashbacks of Jessie in Toy Story 2 always choke me up.

Great film though - animation was excellent, and with no dialogue at all, the story was mostly told in a very clear and straightforward manner. Apparently it was all made with Blender, which is completely open source. That's pretty cool, and while I thought it was technically proficient, I still don't think that kind of animation is quite as distinctive and memorable as handrawn 2D art which you might find in Miyazaki films like Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle.

Somehow, I've never seen Wall-E. I have no idea why. I've heard nothing but great things about it. I need to watch it at some point. Ratatouille was another one that I hadn't seen for the longest time - finally got around to it a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

Same. I haven't watched all of Wall E or seen Ratatouille as an adult.

I should add them to my list of movies to watch this week.

I was this cool the whole time.

Yeah, both of those movies got released around the time I was in high school - so as a stupid high schooler, I thought I was too mature for animated family/kids movies, but also, because I was in high school, the teachers would rarely wheel those movies out with the TV stand and VCR anymore (they abused us with The Polar Express in elementary/middle school for so many years that I absolutely fucking despise the movie).

Ratatouille is good though - a very fun movie.

I just realized the release dates probably contributed to me missing them as well. I was just out of college and not really paying attention to animated movies. So that's how I missed both.

Yeah, depending on the time of your life, it's easy to miss certain movies - even if you just happen to be busy with a lot of bullshit one year.

Speaking of animated movies, did anyone see Mad God? I watched that one a month or so ago and damn, it's like a nightmare-fuel Nightmare Before Christmas. All stop motion and the brainchild of Phil Tippett, who had roles in creature designs in both Star Wars and Jurassic Park.

Interesting! Yeah, Wall-E came out when I was 19 in the year off I took between high school and college so I think the timing there might have been a factor. I saw movies a lot more frequently in my pre-college years and at 19 I was well past my "I'm too cool and edgy for cartoons" era haha.

I still need to watch this movie!

Quote from: costa_oscura on Mar 02, 2025, 08:52 PMIt's very clear that there's no going against the status quo here and you don't respect women with education.  I worked hard for my degrees, credentials and years of experience and I'm not going to diminish them for anyone here or elsewhere.  I know the signs of lacking empathy and Janzoon has exhibited them, whether the status quo here wants to recognize it or not.  It's clear you all would rather defend an established member of this forum than ever consider the idea that I might be right.

And troll, I was serious when I wrote that you need to leave me alone. If you comment any more at me in this forum, I'll take it as harassment. When else do you ignore a woman's request to leave her alone, troll?  When else is this a problem for you?

Sorry, but you can't now switch to the "poor put-upon female card". That doesn't absolve you from any posts you made which others find offensive, wrong or incorrect. Your status as a woman doesn't make you immune to criticism, or warnings. I'm a mod here, and I'm doing my job. Your gender, and whether or not you wish to hear from me, has nothing to do with it. Like I say, you've been warned. I'd prefer to hear no more about this, but that's up to you.

Someone says leave me alone and you proceed to ignore their request. Why?

I was this cool the whole time.

Relevant.

Everyone loves an underdog (undercat?) story. Congrats to everyone involved in the making of the film. Well deserved!

It's a crime that Transformers One wasn't even nominated imo.
