What's the latest movie you've seen?

Man, Meet the Feebles. In college I used to be in a band with this artsy stoner kid who put it on in his dorm one night while we were both puffing the wacky tobacky. That was 13 years ago, so it's definitely due for a rewatch. It is very funny to think that this guy went on to do Lord of the Rings, haha.

Yes, I watched Bad Taste and Braindead at a much too young age and rewatched them a lot during my teens, especially Braindead (which admittedly scarred me a bit the first time I saw it). I also read the Hobbit and LOTR while I was still in elementary school and reread LOTR again in my teens, had a LOTR calendar, etc. So I was a fan of both Jackson and Tolkien. When I learned that Peter Jackson was to adapt LOTR for the big screen, I mean.. that's just awesome craziness and look how great it turned out.

From his start as a DIY film maker, his career trajectory is pretty extraordinary. He seems like such a sweet guy too.

I rewatched David Cronenberg's Crash which is about..

SPOILER ALERT!

.. emotionally void people who seem to desperately search for some feeling or significance. They find it in deviant sex acts and become involved with a tiny subculture that fetishises car crashes, the intensity of feeling from that (or sexual release) and the resulting bodily mutilations. It's a soulless slide into depravity and quite sexually explicit. Sex scenes, in which there is quite a bit of skin on skin contact, must amount to about a third of the movie or so. It might have felt like soft porn at times if it wasn't for the crutches and scars and bracers, although in a way it's a little nice to see things that are usually considered unsexy be portrayed as very desirable here.

James Spader does a good job in a lead role that in hindsight seems a little brave for its time as it involves some male-on-male intimacy. It was also nice seeing Rosanna Arquette in another movie as I just saw her in After Hours (where she's adorable btw even if her character isn't exactly).

My wife HATES this movie. I like it. It's relatively slow going and somewhat bleak, yet I like the exploration of this theme which would seem far fetched to most sane people. Maybe I'm emotionally void and bleak, feel-bad movies are my car crashes.

as for the book the same author wrote empire of the sun which was made into a film by speilberg

it's one of the great wwii novels right up there with the naked and the dead

ballard also wrote the burning world and the swans have an extremely underrated album with the same name which probably isn't just a coincidence but i've never read it

i need to dig back into ballard actually

Violent Night
This movie is basically Die Hard in a mansion with Santa taking the place of John McClane. It wasn't amazing but it was pretty entertaining. Some decent laughs and some ultraviolence.

i need to dig back into ballard actually

I did notice Spader's character was called Ballard and wondered what that was about. Is it just Cronenberg's way of making tribute or did Ballard place himself in his own story?

Does he get hard from watching car crashes?

Also some trivia: there's a scene where they enjoy car crash testing footage with crash test dummies etc. I assume those were recorded at / by Volvo as the video narration was in Swedish.

But the characters in the movie are actively searching for sensational experiences and he happens to get involved in a car accident (he's a shit driver) where this woman who is already a crash fetishist is a passenger in the other car, etc.

So it sorta spreads through this group / subculture.

Watched all the Harry Potters over the past couple weeks.

I liked it more than I thought I would.

I still think his adopted parents don't feel like real people though.

There's also a scene where Ballard and Gabrielle go to a car dealership and of course, she's got the sexy underwear and big leg braces, making the salesman a near mute with sexual excitement. Then they try to move her stiff legs around so they can bang properly and he starts licking on her huge scar.

It's a good scene and probably what you should watch given your circumstance maybe it's too explicit for YouTube, though?

Forgive my ignorance, but, is this film supposed to be a black comedy or something? 

I'm raging with jealousy because I don't have a huge gash like hers, and my brace was much flimsier than hers. 
I do identify with her struggle to get in and out of the car, though - except in my case it didn't attract so much attention!

I think we might share in common that we are a bit counterphobic, Tore:  highly distressing, emotionally bizarre movies are my *car crash*, as well.
