Cat ownership is associated with schizophrenia. It may roughly double the risk, though it may be important when in life you have exposure to them.

This is not completely unexpected because cats are potential carriers for toxoplasmosis, a parasite that increases risk taking behaviours in mice and which studies seem to suggest can have a similar effect on humans. I've known about toxoplasmosis' (and by extension cats') potential for increasing suicide rates and traffic accidents, but the schizophrenia diagnosis is new (if true).
