Quote from: SGR on Jun 27, 2024, 10:15 PMDid you play the 2D platformer Yooka Laylee? Honestly I thought that was a better game.

I did! And I thought it was quite good. I recently watched speedruns of Banjo Kazooie and Tooie so I've just been itching for a collectathon. I should play Yooka Laylee again because I did honestly enjoy it and it's been a hot minute since I've played it

I don't remember how you normally play your games (Console v PC), but word on the street is that they're remastering/improving the original Yooka-Laylee, might be worth waiting for that.

Years ago, I tried playing it with my wife, and for whatever reason, we both became disinterested in it. I kinda felt like the zones were almost too big, the camera kinda stunk, and it was just kinda janky - maybe this remaster will fix that.

I don't think I'm as big on collectathons as I was when I was a kid (I grew up on Mario 64 and DK64) - I generally prefer more engaging gameplay mechanics found in games like Elden Ring or Nioh or (my holy grail of gameplay mechanics) Ninja Gaiden. But I do on some level still enjoy them and find them a little more laid back and relaxing than the typical games I reach for.

Case in point, the somewhat recently released (jesus does time fly) 'Hell Pie'. Did you ever have a chance to play this one? It's like Banjo-Kazooie if it was M-rated and had potty humor and sex jokes. I haven't gotten around to completing it yet (it's another one I play with my wife), but it's complete ridiculousness never failed to bring a smile to my face. I think it's legitimately a better 3D platformer than Yooka Laylee.

That's kind of what happened with me. As much as I liked what they were going for with Yooka Laylee, I feel like the nostalgia wore off pretty quickly with me and I kind of lost interest. I grew up with those games as well and I still think SM64 is one of the best 3D platformers ever made. But I'm with you, I've kind of transitions into enjoying more deep RPG style games tho recently Fallout 76 has taken grasp of my attention with the new expansion. This game has come a long way since it's release and I genuinely have a fun time when I play it. Fallout is probably my top favorite game series similar to you and Ninja Gaiden etc. Fallout 3 was such a good experience for me the first time I played it and it changed me in ways I didn't think gaming could and I've been better since then because of it.

I sometimes have a hard time with games that cater hard to kids. It's something about these cutesy gameworlds that doesn't appeal to me.

Like where's the appeal with Sonic as a character or even that world / setting? I don't really see it 😅

Mario I can stomach, but that also doesn't exactly excite me.

Sonic I only ever really liked as a kid and i like it now because I grew up with it.

I love Pokémon as much as I did as a kid though, I just love the creativity and breadth of all the different pokemon and I like how customizable the experience can be with so many of them with different abilities and such.

I've heard it said before that Sonic is kinda like professional wrestling. Either you got into it at a young age and still love it now, or you don't understand it at all.

From it's inception, Sonic as a series was really about environmentalism and corporate greed destroying the environment. It evolved over the years and its storytelling eventually peaked with Sonic Adventure 2, with not only the environment, but all of humanity hanging in the balance due to a revenge plot killswitch activated by a dead scientist through brainwashing one of his creations. It was back when Sega wasn't afraid to challenge their players with an engaging story, as the scientist's young daughter is shot by the military, and the military later kills him via firing squad. By the end of the story, one of the primary characters in the game that you grow to love hurdles towards Earth from space and dies, sacraficing himself for humanity. He was so popular though, Sega had to craftily find a way to bring him back in later games by introducing the idea of cloning.

Mario stories be like:

Princess captured by evil turtle, go save her!

Sonic stories be like:

Sonic has such a cult fan base as well nowadays that I don't associate Sonic with being for the kids because of how corrupted that fan base has made Sonic and the Sanic parodies and all the fanfic stuff.

I was this cool the whole time.

As a Sonic fan, I stay as far away from Sonic fans as I can. It doesn't matter what you say about Sonic, good or bad, you'll have a legion of lunatic fans shouting at you for whatever your opinion is.

Also, given how shoddy Sonic games have been since the Adventure days, it kind of baffles me how popular he's remained with young kids.

Yeah, Sonic community is notorious for that. Can't deny that Rouge the Bat has it goin' on though.

Even though Sega literally just stole Morrigan's design from Darkstalkers and threw it on an actual bat:

Gaming companies back in the '90s were notorious for pandering to young male fantasies (they still do today, but it's more frowned upon if it's blatant).

I couldn't help myself, I picked up Yooka Laylee and the sequel on Xbox this morning and have been playing all day. I was just itching for a collectathon type game that I can just chill and play and I'm having a wonderful time. I probably won't 100% it but i at least would like to complete most of it, or at the very least see every level. I don't think I got very far the last time I played when it had first come out so i'm excited to play all weekend. It's definitely got the same Banjo Kazooie charm that I know and love.

Should I offer an apology for bringing it up?

Nope. No apology necessary. I'm having an absolute blast

I'm still playing Jedi: Survivor, currently just treasure hunting now that I can get to new areas. A small fly in the ointment is the treasures are mostly just cosmetic stuff and I don't really give a shit about it. I find a new hairdo or a mustache or an ugly pair of pants? Yawn.

I've come to realize the game's simplicity is its best and worst feature. The game has health bar and force bar. You have two main types of force attacks, confusion and telekinesis. It has two weapons if you count the blaster (though yes, different stances). There's no armour, no magical rings, no magical potions (only stims). BD1 (your droid) does have some tricks, but still it's a relatively stripped down game compared to much else.

I kinda like the simplicity when it comes to blasting through the storyline missions. You're not bogged down by equip choices or inventory management. The combat is fun.

When it comes to exploration, the game is too shallow. The simplicity doesn't allow for really interesting finds or rewards. That felt so much more fulfilling in, say, Elden Ring which is kinda the opposite with a lot of depth and options. It's always interesting finding a new weapon.

I played The First Descendent all day today and as a longtime Warframe player, I am having a great time. The game has a few small flaws that I'm sure will be worked on overtime but the gameplay and gun mechanics are an easy 9.5/10. I'm havin' a good time and got into a group and took down the first two main bosses before I stopped playing for the day. If you like Destiny and Warframe, you'll love this. It's free to play so you have no excuse.
