Quote from: SGR on Jan 03, 2025, 11:33 PMWhat consequences, if any, would this imply beyond Trump officially being the first felon elected to the office of US president?

QuoteNew York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan wrote in his ruling that he does not intend to sentence Trump to jail. He said he plans to order an "unconditional discharge," a designation in New York criminal courts for a non-jail and non-probation sentence that carries no other obligations.

I'm sure Trump views it as just another feather in his cap.

Yeah, probably. I wonder if any bookies out there have odds for whether or not Trump will mention Al Capone in his inauguration speech?

U.S. in talks with Taliban for release of Americans held in Afghanistan, source says

QuotePESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Biden administration has been in talks with the Taliban to exchange Americans detained in Afghanistan for Afghans in U.S. custody, a senior Taliban leader with direct knowledge of the negotiations told NBC News on Wednesday.

The Taliban leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly, said the two sides had been negotiating for the past two years but had so far failed to reach a deal.

He said the Taliban had demanded three Afghan nationals, including Muhammad Rahim, the only Afghan prisoner left at Guantánamo Bay, a detention site in Cuba for the mostly Muslim men taken into custody around the world in the U.S. "war on terror."

Who The Fuck Is The Democrats Leader?

Until there's a new presidential nominee, got to be Schumer or Jeffries. Can't be Kamala. If it was Kamala, the question arises "on what basis would you exclude Biden. Age discrimination is illegal, and he was the last person chosen in the normal way by the delegates. If you keep Biden out you gotta keep Kamala out too. Conveniently there's lots of younger talent waiting for an opportunity.

I wouldn't want Schumer or Jeffries as a presidential nominee. They are too much like Kamala and basically just establishment Democrats. They need to find a nominee that leans more into populism.

Establishment Democrats are so disconnected from the people they can't see the forest for the trees.

I was this cool the whole time.

I agree on Schumer & Jeffries as nominees. I value competence over populism, but I take your point. There are probably 4-6 young governors who will consider running, maybe a similar number of senators, a couple of cabinet members, and a few surprises.

AOC is gonna run eventually, it's just a matter of when. I feel like the Dems aren't ready for her yet, and even if they were, they'll be too gunshy after Hillary/Kamala to nominate another woman (which isn't really the right lesson to take from Hillary/Kamala).

Btw: I'm sticking with my prediction that AOC will be president one day.

I think AOC is setting up to run for Senate and take over for Schumer. I could see that happening before her presidential run.

Hm...politically that would make sense I suppose. Regardless, I think it's time for the Democrats to start passing on control and influence of the party to younger generations who have new ideas and could actually manage to make a TikTok video or Instagram post without the assistance of an aid. People with less wrinkles, less cynicism, and who are more in tune with voters and their desires.

I agree big time. I'm ageist and I'm all for younger people being put to the forefront when it comes to offices. It's also the reason I was so much behind Viviek even though I disagree with some of his ideas. I just would rather have some younger people in higher offices.

If the DNC continues as it has, without a radical change of leadership, then even if AOC ran for President and became popular enough to have a shot at the nomination, they'd just find a way to pull the rug out from under her like they did with Bernie.

I don't think so because she's been toeing the line with establishment Dems. She isn't as radical as she used to be when it was her and the other three. I feel like she'd be able to whip the votes she needs
