People who join the military know they could die too, doesn't mean what TR said about them wasn't shit either.

No there is a difference between saying fuck them and the extremes of what TR said. The two posts are not comparable in anyway at all.

Another disgusting juxtaposition is that 5 rich people got so much media coverage while 500 migrants near Greece were barely covered.

I was this cool the whole time.

 That's an excellent point, DJ !

Also, in matters of life and death, the media, the rescuers and (let's admit our own role) the audience, don't like to mention the cost that goes into search-and-rescue efforts. I wonder if a calculation is ever made behind the scenes between these scenarios: innocent people caught in an earthquake or hurricane through no fault of their own/ people indulging their whim for extreme tourism and going to dangerous places for fun.

What you desire is of lesser value than what you have found.

Yes that's a good point I'm curious about as well. Also the military heard when it first exploded but kept it hush hush or maybe they didn't know what the explosion was exactly. Also we live on the internet me saying what I said isnt as bad as all the memes and jokes that were posted online WHILE they were still looking for the rich billionaires.

687 migrants tipped over on a boat trying to get a new life for themselves and only 187 were rescued. 500 are still missing/presumed dead and it varies from men women and children but we are supposed to feel sorry for these extreme tourtists that signed a waiver saying death is a possibility?

I'm sympathtic to yeah a life lost is still sad but at the end of the day. I don't feel all that bad about those 5 that passed away just the teenage son that didn't want to go in the first place.

I was this cool the whole time.

You keep on saying you don't feel bad because they knew they might die yet you bring up the migrants. Do you think they weren't aware they could die?

Its shit that anyone has died. I don't see why it was necessary to post what you did.

Only God knows.

This is an excellent point. The only social media sites I'm allowed to use are Tumblr and Reddit, and I saw so many terrible memes about it. I can't imagine how bad it was on Twitter. I always imagine the people behind their computers are just gleefully watching coverage of these awful events like that Michael Jackson popcorn gif while thinking up their latest clever little meme to post on the internet for some imagined clout.

It's exhausting and kind of depressing that this is how people process this stuff.

"stressed" is just "desserts" spelled backwards

I saw plenty of lefties on Twitter that were actually happy that this happened to these people, because they were rich. What do you think Batty or even TH would say about it if they were here? That's a pretty significant difference between what DJ said about the Titan people and what TR said about the death of veterans. DJ said he doesn't care about the death of these 5 (besides the teen), and that's fine if you don't I guess, but TR actually expressed joy that veterans were killing themselves.

The reason people are talking about the Titan sub story and not the migrant story is that the news and media companies picked up the Titan sub story and ran more pieces on it - because in essence, it's just going to get more clicks and generate more revenue. You can take almost any story about a tragedy, and then redirect to something worse and claim: "And I'm supposed to care/feel sorry about this?". E.g. As an American, I could say: "Almost 100,000 US citizens die from Fentanyl overdoses a year, and fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50, but I'm supposed to care about 500 European migrants on the other side of the world?"

People can only muster the attention to care about so many things, and it is unfortunate that we can't care about every tragedy - but that's just the reality of it. But to say that you don't care about these people dying because they were rich, didn't pay enough taxes, or didn't contribute to society does seem callous. I also don't understand why the assumption is made that they're assholes who didn't contribute to society. You honestly don't think that they donated all kinds of money to charitable causes (probably even causes for the assistance of refugees)? It just comes off as a left-wing simplification of "Rich people = bad" when it's just more nuanced than that. People are individuals with their own strengths and faults, and to just evaluate their character or value to society based on just their net worth seems shortsighted, to say the least.

To be clear, if the story of the Titanic wasn't a pet obsession of mine, I probably wouldn't really care about this missing sub story either. There's just too much going on every day in the world to pay much attention to a story like that. But I wouldn't couch my lack of caring about the story on the fact that the people who died were rich. Only so much time in the day, can only be interested enough to keep up and care about so many things.

Edit: Can't be bothered we are pretty much in agreement anyway, yes I see your points SGR.

Only God knows.

Yeah I get all that but it was a sick obsession that media had to the point of having a death counter well timer right next to the reporter's head about oxygen left. It was reminiscent of when baby Jessica was trapped down the well in the 80s.

I was this cool the whole time.

Montreal has the worst air quality of any major city in the world right now, which would be funnier to me if I wasn't a bit worried about my mom

Our excuse is forest fires though. What's up in your neck of the woods JJ? Still doing the whole industrial revolution thing over there, with soot-covered chimney sweeps?

Practitioner of Soviet Foucauldian Catholicism

That shocks me. I'd like to see how it's worked out and what affects it.

The only thing I can think of is being in the centre of the country, people commuting through to get to places but that doesn't seem like enough. I can't believe it's worse air quality than London.

Baffled tbh.

Only God knows.

I don't disagree. Kinda reminds me of the Covid death count ticker so many news stations had during 2020.

Ethics in media and news is a little wanting. They look for and amplify stories that inspire the strongest emotional reactions among the audience as that will get clicks and make money. It's also adjacent to social media algorithms, the goal of keeping you engaged, regardless of how it might affect your long-term mental health.
