I don't have any love for the U.S. military, but there's never going to be an era where one big dog or another (whether that's the U.S., China or some future superpower) isn't going to fill those shoes. You think the CCP are going to be kinder world police than the U.S.? Probably not.  As much as they like to complain about the U.S., the Nordic countries seem to be rather thrilled by our presence since it means they don't need to pay for a standing army if Russia ever comes knocking.  Politicians in various other countries also like our military presence because we have big $$$ and they like it when we spend our money there, which we tend to do when we have boots on the ground.

Just watched Adobe's demo of their new AI text-to-image app, Firefly (beta). Design has changed IMMENSELY from my days as a senior designer.

iceland is the only one without a standing army

norway and sweden have conscription

but i get what you're saying but the people up there have a myriad of opinions

i get it's impractical for them to distance themselves too far from america but i also think they're concerned about dissolving democracy

whether or not we hold russia or china at bay doesn't change my beliefs

as an american i'm responsible for america

the chinese and russians should fo the same and many people are

Vietnam noodle vendor jailed for anti-state propaganda

QuoteA noodle vendor in Vietnam who parodied one of the country's most powerful ministers has been jailed for five-and-a half years for anti-state propaganda.

Bui Tuan Lam became famous when he posted a video in 2021 mimicking the trademark gestures of the high-end London-based restaurateur Salt Bae.

A minister had been previously filmed eating a gold-leaf covered steak in a Salt Bae video, causing a scandal.

The Vietnamese government is strictly intolerant of dissent.

The 39-year old's trial and sentencing in a Danang court took just one day. He must serve four years of probation after being released, his lawyer confirmed to the BBC.

In his video, Bui Tuan Lam spread green onions on his noodle soups in imitation of the Turkish celebrity chef - real name Nusret Gökçe - who often sprinkles salt on steak in a theatrical manner.

Days earlier, footage of Vietnam's Minister of Public Security To Lam eating a $2,000 (£1,600) steak at the chef's restaurant had caused an uproar online.

Many Vietnamese noted the incongruence of a top communist official eating a dish costing more than his monthly salary, and right after he had paid a visit to the grave of Karl Marx in London.

that's really disappointing

i have hope for vietnam to be a model of a successfully run moral communist state too

i hope the people don't let that stand because there really are a lot of good people there

i hope amnesty international makes a clear honest objective statement about this

this doctor is a real one

QuoteAn Indiana board is set to hear allegations Thursday that an Indianapolis doctor should face disciplinary action after she spoke publicly about providing an abortion to a 10-year-old rape victim from neighboring Ohio.

that's what real doctors do; they care for people

it's nice to see a real doctor up on it

that's courage

NPR - Richard Barnett, who put his feet on Nancy Pelosi's desk, is sentenced to over 4 years

He got almost as much time as the Vietnamese noodle guy.
