You can find the same details of the story in other sources

Quote from: Guybrush on May 10, 2023, 06:40 PMThey are. It depends on where you get electricity, but by and large they're definitely better for the environment. Plus in order to get closer to the possibility of powering cars with green energy, you kinda have to make a move away from fossil fuels. It's a necessary step.

Maybe you can imagine the sort of discussions and conspiracy theory that's been going on here after policies were put in place to promote electric cars. It's been like that for many years now. Like.. they're cheaper when you buy them, you get to use the buss lanes, way less upkeep. Meanwhile, people who'd bought expensive fossil cars were enraged. Conspiracy theorists tried the "well, actually they're worse for the environment" argument but AFAIK that's been debunked over and over again. It flares up now and then because:

  • A lot of people want electric cars to fail for some reason
  • Who doesn't love the irony of something that's environmentally good turning out to be environmentally worse?

Anyways, the power in our electric grid comes from dammed water. It's better than burning oil. There's an actual reason electric cars are part of national policy here.

my electricity comes from natural gas which is about twice as carbon friendly as coal which is great until you're using three times as much of it

and large dams are devastating to the local ecosystem and like suburbs the damage is usually irreparable

the private automobile is still a world wide super killer

electric vehicles help people pretend they're doing something positive which makes them even more unpalatable from ecological standpoint

the private automobile in any form is unsustainable and everything that supports their continued existence is bad

Quote from: Janszoon on May 10, 2023, 07:02 PMI've always thought one of the biggest upsides of EVs is the flexibility of how they're powered. Like you alluded to, they work with whatever powers the local grid, which makes it easier for a country or region to move from one source of energy to another. I recognize that there are environmental issues with mining for and disposing of the batteries, but I think moving in the direction of technology that doesn't put all the energy eggs in one basket is a positive thing.

we all know trains and public transportation is the only real path - is this worth it if it pushes the real solution back another century?

then use a better source, please

anyway though of course their fucking criminals

there's no other path in america

Those are also definitely important things, though obviously they have their flaws as well. I generally try to walk most places, which I think is the best option if you're able to do it. The reality is that there is no panacea, just a variety of imperfect solutions that are better or worse ideas depending on the context.

that's 100% true - so is your more flexible energy source argument

now my car is around 25 years old

here's where i get sensitive

when some rich yuppie cunt who has gone through five automobiles during that time starts up with this we need to transition shit

i've kept my car running and i'm not spending $40 K now

i mean people actually think they're more environmentally inclined when they've had multiple cars manufactured in their service while i've been doing my best with a good local mechanic

and when i feel like i'm getting judged and shit that hits me really fucking wrong especially when it's from someone who can afford whatever the fuck it is they're driving

Let's just get this right. He fired on people RUNNING AWAY, whom he could not confirm were armed (they weren't), gave no warning and shot at kids. So his first reaction on seeing people "on his lawn" was to go up and get his gun?

Sorry, but so many Americans are gone crazy these days. It literally is a case of shoot first, ask questions later. Fucker should go to jail forever.

I agree that some people can be dumb in terms of what they consider environmentally friendly, but both cars I've owned over the past 13 years or so have been gas-powered and I've never felt like I was being judged for it. My wife is on her second hybrid within roughly the same time span and no one has judged her for that either. Generally my experience where I live has been that no one gives a shit what anyone else is driving.

Throw your dog the invisible bone.

people judge others by what they're driving all the time

in fact, this discussion started as judgmental prejudices against large vehicles

people frown you for driving a beater

some women like to fuck men with nice cars

some people think maintaining a classic car is admirable

some prissy cunts think they're better because they drive a an ev

some people, like myself, assume ev owners are prissy cunts

I'm just saying I've never felt judged for driving a gas-powered car. Maybe it's just that I don't care.
