While few of you are from this side of the pond, I'd still be interested in your views on this.

Fallout from Gary Lineker incident continues

FYI, what he said was basically the new policy of the Tory government to refuse entry to immigrants and looking for asylum (no exceptions, that I can see after a quick read-through) instead sending them to countries like Rwanda is like "1930s Germany". Tories didn't like that. BBC, which is basically run by Tory money (tell me it isn't) came down hard on Lineker and so we are where we are.

So is this a case of a TV presenter getting involved in something he should have stayed out of, a man standing up for what he believes in and using his - until recently - public platform to do this, an uncaring Tory government who are racist despite having their first ever Asian leader/Prime Minister, and who don't appreciate public figures coming out against them, a case of the muzzling of free speech, or fuck off Trollheart we're American we don't care?

I personally have to say, no matter how stupid and pointless this will seem, that I won't be watching Match of the Day tonight, in a kind of solidarity with Lineker, the only one I can practice. Will mean nothing, but it will make me feel better. If everyone boycotted the BBC they'd be fucked. Maybe it would show them something. Or not.

He never said the policy was similar he said the language used was, I think.

Tbh I don't like Lineker. I remember him making borderline xenophobic jokes about Unai Emery and implying non whites can't be English. I can't stand him but it is funny to see the BBC getting this so wrong and everyone turning on them.

Only God knows.

QuoteTrollheart we're American we don't care

the situation is so different than american politics it's hard to say

immigration into britain isn't the same as america so i don't think it's our place to judge the tory position there

the nazi reference is different because our grandparents weren't hiding in bomb shelters

i don't think he should be banned from announcing games for ANY opinion unless he carries on about it during the games and i doubt he does

howard cosell did monday night football in america even after he publicly supported ali for refusing the draft which was really divisive back then

they still snub him for broadcast awards even though he's probably the greatest ever american sportscaster of all time

but they never silenced him - that's ridiculous

Yeah as JJ says it was "the language of the 1930s in Germany" but the meaning was clear. He did it on Twitter I believe so no, not on air; I don't think he has that lack of professionalism, and anyway his programme is not live, so the BBC would just refuse to air those comments.

JJ, why do you think he's racist if he's making these comments? Would he not be more on the side of the Torys rather than berate them if that were the case? Either way, as you say, the gobshite BBC have handled it all wrong, stifling free speech and now so many presenters have come out in support of him, basically on strike, that they are royally fucked. And no doubt others in the world of sport and news and further will come into it soon if they don't back down. They are such hypocrites.

I don't think he's racist, I think he's a hypocrite. Thinks he's holier than thou and is very quick to have a go at others for perceived racism but fails to meet his own standards.

The joke about Emery was the exact sort of thing he'd shame someone else for.

Only God knows.

Kenzaburo Oe died.

I've only read A Personal Matter and a collection of nonfiction - letter exchanges better him and Edward Said

I've only read A Personal Matter.  It's sad that he's gone, but it seems like he got to live a nice long life at least.
