While I know some of us have yet to post our comments on (or, possibly, listen to) Mixtape 3, I just want to put up the next one. This time, I'm not doing a poll. As he has been fighting for this theme since our first one, and nobody else voted for it, Mixtape 4 will be under the theme @DJChameleon has proposed three times now.

(Not the Eric Burdon kind)

So bear in mind when you're sending me your tracks for this one.
Which you can do any time, but should begin doing by next Monday, April 14, which is the deadline for getting your comments in on Mixtape 3.

Don't worry: as usual, Das Boot will be along to remind you if you forget!

@Trollheart Warning !

You should have received a PM that includes a certain quantity of wild animals, so...

What you desire is of lesser value than what you have found.

Goddamn it! Too late!

Looks like we just need a song submission from  @Guybrush and we're good to go. Unless @Lexi Darling wants to throw one in? Hopefully we can get this moving by tomorrow.

SCD Mixtape 4

Theme: Animals

1. "The Golden Morning" by Pekka Pohjola (Submitted by Saulaac)
2. "The Golden Goose" by Todd Rundgren (Submitted by Buckeye Randy)
3. "Butterfly" by Crazy Town (Submitted by DJ Chameleon)
4. "The Truth Comes Out" by Corb Lund (Submitted by Lisnaholic)
5. "Chicken Talk" by Yma Sumac (Submitted by Guybrush)
6. "A Thousand Wild Horses" by Blue Sky Riders (Submitted by Someone who just won't fucking go away!)

Sadly, we have no submission from Lexi this time so we're one down. But we'll dedicate the mixtape to her. If I got any artists and songs arse-about-face like last time, let me know, as some could go either way.

Oh, and thanks to everyone for avoiding the temptation to nominate "The Birdie Song" (which carries with it a mandatory lifetime ban!) or Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict", which is just, well, silly.

Reviews/comments in by next Tuesday if possible, that's April 29.

Thanks for putting it together, @Trollheart 😊

Happiness is a warm manatee

Just a small correction, @Trollheart.

The artist is Pekka Pohjola, and the track is called "Ensimmainen ammu" (which translates to "The First Morning").

Thanks!

"An underrated muso" but don't quote me on it..

Pekka Pohjola - Ensimmäinen aamu / The First Morning

Is Trollheart's youtube link (Mixtape 4) broke for everybody or just me?

I just tried it and it worked. Let me see if I accidentally failed to make it public.

Yeah that was it: I made it private by mistook. Soz. Should be okay now. Let me know if not.

The link works for me now. Convenient. Cheers.

 Yeah, if only we could get rid of contributor #6, who ever they may be. ;)

^ Ouch ! You came perilously close to mentioning Syd Barratt's Birdie Hop there, TH. Then you might've had a fight on your hands. As it is, I'm happy to agree with your sentiments.

What you desire is of lesser value than what you have found.

Song: "The Golden Morning/Ensimmainen ammu"
Artist: Pekka Pohjola
Nationality: Finnish
Source:  2nd album Harakka Bialoipokku
Year:  1974
Genre: Prog rock/Jazz rock/Jazz fusion/Avant-prog
Submitted by:  Saulaac
Familiarity:  Zero
Comments: I like what I think may be Hammond Organ, and the bright piano. I feel this will be an instrumental, see if I'm right. Some brass coming in now sort of livens up the tune, though I could probably live without the frenetic sax or whatever it is. I suppose at least it's not flute, so there is that. Unlike gay and bi men, and I guess most women, I don't enjoy having horns up in my face.  Halfway through it takes a sort of Alan Parsons Project turn, which is certainly interesting. Very upbeat but not jazzy enough to turn me off it, but it's not something that would make me want to listen to more. At times it sounds like it could be a 70s TV theme tune.

Song: "The Golden Goose"
Artist:  Todd Rundgren
Nationality: American
Source: 10th album Healing
Year: 1981
Genre: Progressive Pop/Art Pop/Synthpop
Submitted by: Buckeye Randy
Familiarity: I've heard one album of his; honestly, I wasn't that impressed
Comments: Bouncy and pleasant but really doesn't do anything for me, and doesn't improve my appreciation of the man. He may be regarded as a legend by many, but I don't see it. It's a little annoying, if I'm honest. Sort of like he's latching onto trends in 80s new wave and synthpop and grafting them onto his own music. That riff is right out of something by The Cars.

Song: "Butterfly"
Artist: Crazy Town
Nationality: American
Source: Debut album The Gift of Game
Year: 1999
Genre: Pop Rock/Nu-metal/Pop rap/Pop metal
Submitted by:  DJ Chameleon
Familiarity:  Zero
Comments: Seems I got this one the wrong way around, so switching artist for song and vice versa. This definitely has something about it; I like the sort of western-style guitar (western as in, cowboy movie, not as in occidental) and the rap is pretty cool.
Rating: :3stars:

Song: "The Truth Comes Out"
Artist:  Corb Lund
Nationality: Canadian
Source: 4th album Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer
Year:  2005
Genre: Alt-country/Singer-songwriter
Submitted by: Lisnaholic
Familiarity: Zero
Comments: Oh I love the dramatic guitar that opens this! The basic tempo and melody is just so cooly laid-back, really like this. Easily the best track so far, doubt it will be surpassed. The orchestral strings are beautiful and merge so well with the music. Love it.

Song: "Chicken Talk"
Artist:  Yma Sumac
Nationality: Peruvian
Source: 4th album Mambo!
Year: 1954
Genre:  Mambo (duh)/Exotica/Space Age Pop/Latin Jazz
Submitted by: Guybrush
Familiarity: Zero
Comments: Surely not only the first Peruvian track we've had on one of our mixtapes, but the first South American one? Also, I think, the oldest track, coming as it does from the 1950s. I would preface this by saying I'm not a big fan of Latin jazz (I know, I know! Colour you all surprised!) or mambo, and the whistling is pretty annoying. I think the kindest thing I can say is that I don't hate it.

Song: "A Thousand Wild Horses"
Artist: Blue Sky Riders
Nationality: American
Source: Debut album Finally Home
Year: 2013
Genre: Country
Submitted by: He Who Must Not Be Named
Familiarity: I only know this album
Comments: Blue Sky Riders are a country group featuring Kenny Loggins and two other people I don't know - they could be big in the country scene, but their names don't mean shit to me. I love this album, apart from maybe two tracks, and while this is probably nothing too special I just love the sentiments in it. Hell, it's a country ballad, what can I tell ya?
Rating: N/A

Footnote: apologies for the low scores, but only one of your songs really hit the mark for me. You'll probably all rate mine low too, and that's fair enough, but I've never been the type to pretend to like something I don't, or to curry favour (don't even like curry anyway) so if nothing else, my reactions and comments are, and always will be, honest, sometimes even brutally so. Better luck next time, I guess.

1. "The Golden Morning/Ensimmainen ammu" by Pekka Pohjola - I like some horns in my fusion/avante-garde/progressive/alternative and this fits the bill.  Not sure I'll explore the artist further than this but glad I heard it.

2. "The Golden Goose" by Todd Rundgren - Most of Todd's albums include a fun (gimmicky) song and this is one falls into that category.  The subject matter is the record company wanting a 'golden egg' (hit single) and the album (Healing) is more about progressive soundscapes.

3. "Crazy Town" by Butterfly - Not exactly in my wheelhouse but it has a catchy beat and nice visual in the video.

4. "The Truth Comes Out" by Corb Lund - Nice western vibe and the video feels like an entire Hallmark movie.

5. "Chicken Talk" by Yma Sumac - This song is lots of fun in this themed format we're sharing.  I like it!

6. "A Thousand Wild Horses" by Blue Sky Riders - I like the picking on this and I don't think it needed the fills and slick back-ups.

I know there was a bit of a SNAFU which delayed listening, but could we get this moving please if possible? Tomorrow is May 1, and I'd like to start working on the 5th tape before Star Wars Day if we can. TVM.
