Oasis defo don't have effortless cool. Liam forces it as well as his working classness.

The walk

Regarding this post from Lisna:

QuoteI once saw their big hits dismissed as "pub singalongs", and perhaps that's why they have fallen from popularity since their '90s heydays.

I don't think they have fallen from popularity. They're just as popular now if not more so. They haven't released anything in twenty years but people younger than me gravitate toward them. I've said this before but they're genuinely held in the same regard as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Stones etc by a particular type of person. It's really strange. As I said, think it's partly to do with the BBC and what they push. You don't have to dig deep to find their music, it's just there.

I very rarely got the sense that they were putting on a front or forcing an image. I feel like the closest they came to that is when they leaned too deeply into the Beatles (e.g. "Don't Look Back in Anger", "Champagne Supernova", "All Around the World"). Still, I do think that came from a genuine love for The Beatles. I think it's sort of like you said, they're a couple of knobheads - but it's the fact that they embrace it that makes them come off as authentic (similar thing with Mark E. Smith, total asshole, but he embraced it and didn't shy away from it that made it oddly endearing). They behave practically the same way today (in interviews, f.ex) as they did in 1996, though likely with a little less inebriation. I've got a very sophomoric sense of humor too, so the humor of the Gallagher brothers is right up my alley.

Quote from: SGR on Mar 30, 2025, 08:43 PMSuede hasn't gotten much love here, and I'm not that high on their first record - but their follow-up record, Dog Man Star, is a very good record.

yeah was actually listening to it yesterday and thinking maybe I'm doing them an injustice not voting for them (I like them, Pulp and Blur about equally anyway but there's only so many bands you can vote for). At least, I listen to dog man star more often than anything by those other bands. The real injustice is Super Furry Animals being rated so low though, even though I don't consider them britpop. By far the best band in this thread

ps Super Furry Animals being much better than the other bands here is also why they shouldn't be classified as britpop xoxo

Whoa, well that wasn't on my bingo card for 2025, cool.

content warning for jimmy specifically
and it would be even cooler if Oasis also dropped a new album now that they're back together. :D

(I fully expect it not to happen though, and will be pleasantly surprised if they just stay together long enough to perform at the concert I'm scheduled to see them at later this year)

Quote from: jimmy jazz on Apr 10, 2025, 03:31 PMNew Pulp album, for the Pulpsters.

New single is pretty good - it's exciting and entirely surprising we're even getting 'more Pulp'. Wow. But sign o' the times with the video and the AI being used, eh?

The best thing about Britpop wasn't the name bands it was all the other bands who made one great single or album and then disappeared into obscurity, some of these bands were more successful than others but deserve a mention...

The Auteurs (Had to mention them first), Saint Etienne, Birdland, Adorable, Hefner, World Of Twist, Supermodel, 50ft Dolls, Ash, The Weekenders, The Bluetones, The Sea Urchins, Elastica, These Animal Men, Teenage Fanclub, Boyracer, Sleeper, David Devant and his Spirit Wfe, Soup Dragons, Kingmaker, Cornershop, Huggy Bear,  Shampoo, The Lightning Seeds, The Longpigs, Salad, Silver Sun, Denim, Echobelly, The Yummy Fur, Gay Dad, Mansun, Boo Radleys, Spiritualized, Menswear, Drugstore, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Family Cat, Trash Can Sinatras, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Tindersticks, Northern Uproar, Embrace, Gallon Drunk, Space, Gene, Strangelove, Hurricane No 1, S*M*A*S*H, Ultrasound.

1992-95 were the best years for Britpop, around 96 you started getting crap like Dodgy, Shed Seven & Ocean Colour Scene.

I always signify the end of Britpop when Robbie Williams released Angels.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were so good, definitely one of the best bands I discovered from your 100 thread.
