Okay what I've done is allowed everyone three votes each, so you can choose (duh) your top three. If there are other bands or artists to be added, let me know, but for now I've included "Other" as a catchall for those not featured, just in case. The poll has no closing date so will remain open until you guys want to close it.

I am Trollheart, and I approve this message.

I don't think The Verve should be included.

Yes you can add them. The Stone Roses are even worse than Oasis in my opinion.

Right you are jj, Oasis had 3 great records (4 if you count The Masterplan), while The Stone Roses only had one.  8)

Well at least Oasis released a few and made a proper go of it even if most of them are shit and the best ones are just average.

The Stone Roses didn't have any great records. Ian Brown's solo stuff is better than TSR and that's saying something. Their reputation grows every year as well. It's ridiculous. I'm convinced it's to do with the BBC having their studio in Salford and dedicating so much time and money to music from round there. They absolutely wank off this sort of thing.

Right, well, as someone who's pretty much disinterested in Britpop (the lads from the Sahara had a few half-decent hits, not mad about the boys who flash by in a splurge of colour, and the ones who crush everything are decent enough but I haven't heard enough) let me know definitively what bands you want added so that I know.

By coincidence, 3 is exactly the number of votes I'd need if the poll question was "Britpop bands you have heard something by", but jj makes it look like it's a by-invitation-only thread ?

Quote from: jimmy jazz on Mar 29, 2025, 07:17 PMThought I'd post the thread.

Lisna, you're the kind of guy who doesn't need an invitation. You have a VIP pass to all threads!  8)  :checkmark:

"An underrated muso" but don't quote me on it..

Absolutely, as long as you don't ask me to include that Mexipop band, Los Chicos Ingleses!

You don't need permission. I just tagged people to make sure the thread was seen.

You're a big hitter and you can do what you like  8)

Which 3 would that be?

Suede hasn't gotten much love here, and I'm not that high on their first record - but their follow-up record, Dog Man Star, is a very good record.

Thank you, Saulaac, Trollheart and jimmy jazz ! I genuinely appreciate those comments of affirmation. :thumb:

In order of "quantity of material heard" it goes: Oasis > Blur > The La's
I'd probably say the same order for who I liked as well. I have noticed that Oasis are being dismissed by many people, both online generally and on SCD. They aren't a favourite band of mine and are apparently very arrogant brothers irl, but as a band:-

i) they were big enough to "break through" in Mexico, replacing Beatles, Floyd and Queen as the band that students might mention.
ii) they were pioneers, afaik, of that post-modern recycling technique of putting chunks of older artists' style into new songs.
iii) they had some super-catchy hooks, on What's The Story, for example. I once saw their big hits dismissed as "pub singalongs", and perhaps that's why they have fallen from popularity since their '90s heydays.

Despite our various debates and disagreements, it's takes like these that remind me of why I like you so much, Lisna  ;)

I've made no secret that I'm a big fan of Oasis, but I think like many bands that get big, they reached a point of 'critical-mass' in terms of attention and stardom that elicited a knee-jerk reaction to them and their music among some, especially in retrospect (and I'm not referring to anyone on this forum, rather just generally). In some ways, it's similar to the reaction/reassessment U2 started to get after the '90s (though I'd argue, unlike U2, Oasis didn't completely sell out, and also unlike U2, their ability to write big hits and keep relevant started to seriously wane).

I think there may be a difference in perspective between Blur and Oasis among the British and Americans. I can only speak for my experience, but Oasis' music did not feel as unabashedly British as Blur's did, and I was also able to relate to it a lot more. It's no secret that Oasis came from much more of a working class background (than Blur f.ex) - parents were Irish immigrants, they had an abusive alcoholic father, they never went to art school, etc. So when they were ripping off T.Rex tunes and singing about the joys of cigarettes and alcohol, that resonated with me as a teenager. For me, add to the fact that I have a brother with a somewhat similarly truculent relationship as Liam and Noel have (though much less physically abusive). One grandfather of mine was a millworker, the other was a farmer, so working class has been my ancestry. Oasis' debut Definitely Maybe was actually the first album I ever bought with my own money. So of course, many of Oasis' tunes of love and drinking hit a little closer to home than songs from Blur that (f.ex) relayed stories of men who escaped the city by retiring to expensive country houses.

Also, Oasis to me always had an effortless aspect of coolness and attitude that Blur wish they had, but never did.

To be fair to Blur though, I like a lot of their stuff too, though the stuff I love the most probably comes from 13, which was more art-rock than Britpop.

Blur and Pulp both well in the lead, with 6 and 5 votes respectively, while Oasis make up a poor third with, well, 3 votes.

Right back at you, SGR
Thanks for your insightful post, insightful on two counts: some background about the Gallagher brothers which was new to me, and a rare glimpse of your own family and past too. :thumb:

^ Yep, I didn't spell it out in my post, but that was my feeling about Oasis' popularity too: that it was really high at one point, then , as people got a bit bored with the old songs, there was a backlash to hide the embarrassment of all the superlatives that had been lavished on Oasis earlier.
