Extra sub-forums

I'm sure this will drive Weekender up the wall, but I've opened a new sub forum for Heavy Metal in the Music forum, as I have a lot of metal-themed threads to port over, and I don't want to be crowding out the music forum. Also, many people have no interest in metal (philistines) so I don't want to be bothering them with threads they're not interested in. Therefore, any metalheads or anyone interested in metal can seek these threads out in the new sub-forum.

I'm open to adding extra sub-forums for other genres, like we had on Music Banter, but only if people want them, so if you'd like, say, a dedicated sub-forum for electronic music or jazz or hip-hop or Norwegian nose flute music, drop a post in here and if Guybrush doesn't chase me away with a broom I'll sort it.

Actually, I'm happy with metal being contained to one thread.

Sounds like you've been busy giving the place a solid refresh! The new sub-forums make total sense and should help keep everything organized. Don't worry the changes are welcome, not off-putting. Good luck finding that alarm code! 😄

Not really. These seem to be the only ones really being discussed. I mean, we could put in ska or punk or vaporwave if they're required, but I didn't see any point in adding a bunch of extra sub-forums that would remain empty.

Basically, if you're interested in a music genre and want a sub-forum, give us a shout.

There is a definite tendency to "bloat" a forum. Genres are a good example. If you make a rock forum, it might seem inevitable that you now also have to create more subforums for the other genres.

I think it's better to hold back on this instinct as every new forum potentially also brings with it more clutter and more difficult navigation overall.

I would add that unused sub-forums which have been requested run the risk of being deleted. If you request a sub-forum, then use it or lose it. Any new sub-forums added by member request which have not had at least one thread posted within a week will run the risk of being shut down. After two weeks of zero activity the member who requested the sub-forum(s) will be advised and if there is no improvement after three weeks the sub-forum will be deleted. If this is done, it will not be re-established.

This isn't meant to be a heavy-handed warning, but honestly, if you really need a sub-forum and we oblige, then we expect you to use it. We need to see that there actually is/was a need for such. Take your cue from Mindy/Deepminder: as soon as he got the go-ahead for his IT sub-forum he started creating thread after thread, and now there's no stopping him. That's what we want to see.

As of today, neither the Punk nor the Electronic/Experimental sub-forums, requested yesterday, have seen a single post, never mind a single thread. While of course we realise people are busy and we don't expect you to have been parked outside with a van ready to move in, we would like to see some action in these sub-forums to justify their creation.

To the person who wanted a sub-forum for underwater transport though, we must decline. There is no way we can create a sub sub-forum, sorry.
