Hey, I know it's going to make glum reading, but I'd like to try to keep a list (god help us! A list!) of the terror and terrorism-motivated attacks that will be taking place on US soil. Are they going to increase or decrease under the Trump administration? Can we expect the method to change? We've already seen one today, the first of the new year, in which a car was used as a weapon, and at Christmas week the same thing happened in Germany. While that particular attack doesn't have relevance to this thread, as it was not on American soil, it does point towards a worrying new trend, where people will not feel safe literally walking down the road, turning their heads at every rev of an engine or screech of tyres. Of course, a gun attack gives little to no warning until someone has been hit, but I feel it's far more terrifying if you suddenly see or hear a car or truck bearing down upon you, and it's going to get so people will actually be afraid to cross the roads.

What's going to be done? Are streets to be pedestrianised? Will that stop someone intent on taking life? Can there be stricter checks for driving licences? Would that even matter? Someone intending to kill with a motor vehicle is not going to worry that they have no licence to drive the thing! Are cars going to be fitted with remote immobilisers? What then of the older models? Will police cruisers get "armoured up" to be able to take on, ram or put out of commission a "death vehicle"? I have no answers, but Jesus Christ behind the wheel, if I had to worry about being mown down by some fucking lunatic in a car every time I left home, I'd probably just stay indoors. It's got to be absolutely terrifying as a future prospect.

Today's, then, sadly first attack of 2025 ended leaving 10 people dead and 35 injured as a driver deliberately ploughed into post-New Year crowds on New Orleans' historic Bourbon Street in the early hours of this morning, just before the Sugar Bowl (?) which appears to be a college football event. I'm sure you'll know the one. The suspect was shot dead (or is at least dead; doesn't specify how they died) and afterwards ISIS flags and explosive devices were recovered from the vehicle. What a horrible way to start the new year!

Pardon?

Did you forget Nice?

Or Berlin?

Or the many others that have happened in the past decade.

Birmingham has those ugly blockade and barriers all over New Street, you see them everywhere.

Not a new trend at all and I already have it on my mind whenever I'm in places like that.

Only God knows.

FBI finds 150 pipe bombs (possibly largest haul ever), plus a suicide vest in a Virginia home. Guy (a Trump supporter) lost three fingers while preparing bombs.

Yeah well true, but in comparison to gun attacks I'd call it fairly new. I used to hear about school shootings, bombings, even beheadings, but this usage of vehicles as weapons seems new to me. Maybe it's not that new, but I'm hearing more about it now, sadly. I guess "new" could be qualified with "relatively", in terms of the many horrible and inventive ways people have been killing innocents since well before I was born.

Cybertruck explosion in front of Trump's hotel in Las Vegas one dead and 10 injured.

QuoteA Tesla Cybertruck exploded and burst into flames Wednesday morning just outside the entrance of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing a person inside the vehicle and injuring several others standing nearby, local officials said.

The suspicious blast is being investigated as a possible terrorist attack, three senior law enforcement members briefed on the matter told NBC News. A motive has yet to be established.

The truck from the New Orleans attack and this truck were rented from the same company.

I was this cool the whole time.

And apparently, the two guys responsible for the New Orleans attack and the Cybertruck explosion served at the same military base - the plot thickens.

Every time something like this happens, you get idiots on the Internet convinced it's a secret plot by the government or something.

Only God knows.

Yeah, there is that, but I don't think that's necessarily what is being suggested by this connection between these two. I think the suggestion is simply that there's a possibility there was some kind of coordination between the two as they might have known each other. Authorities are investigating it, so not much use to speculate. Very possible it's just a coincedence.

Wasn't really talking to that, though it looks like it. Sorry. Just my thoughts on what I see online. There's always people who think it's a stitch up and the government did it. Apparently the FBI did this one and planted the ISIS flag. Rather than the most obvious and simplest explanation that it is another extremist doing what we've seen many times before.

Only God knows.
