Back in 2003 (and again in 2017) the UK based website TV Cream did a top 100 singles of all time list which you can see here.
https://web.archive.org/web/20020802213905/http://tv.cream.org/arksingles.htm

The criteria was it was based on submissions from the readers and staff of what they really listened to, not what SHOULD be there because of who recorded it. I made a quick playlist on Spotify of it and have had fun listening to it all day.
So with that in mind I would like to do one here.

Just name any 5 of your favourite singles, when we have over 100 songs I'll figure out the voting and stuff.
The more random the better, nobody needs to hear the fucking Beatles or REM for the millionth time.

Mine to start us off....

ABBA - Voulez Vous
The Damned - Smash It Up
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes
Goldbug - Whole Lotta Love
Sparks - No 1 Song In Heaven

Good thread, I'll have a think.

So basing this purely on how much I enjoyed the song and not so much down to things like impact, influence, originality etc?

Only God knows.

I checked that website list out of curiosity and one song in particular jumped out at me. 'Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)' by John Fred and his Playboy Band. It seems like an odd song to be on that list to begin with and even odder, for some strange reason, that song popped into my head out of the blue only yesterday morning.

@Suburban Placeholder? Ok, so just to make sure, these have to be officially released as singles, right? Not just any songs?

"stressed" is just "desserts" spelled backwards

Tough to narrow it down to 5 but these were the first ones that came to my mind. They have stuck with me since I first heard them when they were first released, I still listen to them occasionally, and they still sound just as good to me now as they did back then...

The Jam - That's Entertainment
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Over the Rainbow
Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime
The Stranglers - Golden Brown
Wire - Kidney Bingos

^ This instruction made me laugh, and my selections are fairly random: the first five lesser-known songs that came to mind from the era when me and my friends bought singles:-

Barry Ryan:-  Eloise
Blackfoot Sue: - Standing In The Road
Ralph McTell:-  First And Last Man
Kilburn And The Highroads:-  Rough Kids
Cat Stevens:-  Here Comes My Wife

What you desire is of lesser value than what you have found.

Fun idea!

Mono - Slimcea Girl (1997)
Underworld - Nylon Strung (2016)
Salem - Frost (2010)
Brotha Lynch Hung - Krocadil (2013)
The Sound - Heyday (1980)

It's certainly a bit tough to be random and avoid super acclaimed artists; most of the lesser known stuff I'm into is ambient, new age and prog, which aren't very singles-y genres. But here's what I came up with.

Orbital - Halcyon + On + On
Hum - Stars
Snapcase - Caboose
Lil Jon - Get Low
Ethel Cain - American Teenager

Apart from avoiding the obvious ones, I've tried to make it varied genre-wise. And I'm also avoiding ones that would be too predictable for me to pick, so no Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Kate Bush, or the Raincoats (it hurts)

Celia & the Mutations - Mony Mony (one of my all time favourites. The Mutations were the Stranglers in disguise lol)
The kinks - See my friends (raga rock baby, pretty big fish but just allowed because not their most obvious song)
The tammys - Egyptian shumba (the greatest 60s garage rock song ever)
Jeanette - Porque te vas (it's just so beautiful)
The flying lizards - money (one of post-punk's greatest achievements)

I'll pick some long-time favourites for this.

The Cure - Pictures of You
Slowdive - Alison
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends

Jesus, this guy can pick singles! (I absolutely love all 5 of them, The Sundays are massively underrated)

Be a great little playlist for a good cry.

Cool idea! I will think a little before I post my picks but all the songs posted so far that I recognise are bangers  8)
