Greatest Hits

When I was at the gym this morning, I was wondering what's people's general opinion on Greatest Hits albums and compliations in general?

I got into Van Halen based off of listening to their greatest Hits album also my step dad was a big VH fan too.

I like the fact that it cuts out the filler from specific albums the only downside is the few tracks from a specific album that I tend to like that wasn't popular enough to be considered a hit so it doesn't make the cut.

I guess nowadays it is different with streaming because we could just put together our own greatest Hits playlist and add in any song we like but my question is more geared towards the albums put together by labels that are considered Greatest Hits.

I don't have too much of a problem with compilations like this.  For some artists it's the tracks I wanna hear the most in a moment.  Ig it depends on my mood cuz I am a huge album listener, but I do like greatest hits too in the right mood.  At times its been how I got into an artist, also like when they have special tracks at the end that aren't on other releases.

Oh, the Sting and the Police combined greatest hits album was on constant play in middle school.  That album is very special to me.

I too used to do this. If I liked a song by an artist I would usually go for either a greatest hits/best of compilation, or a live album. Best way to see if you really want to get into the artist or if it was just that one song. I have an issue with artists who constantly put out new greatest hits packages (step forward, Eagles!) because most of the time there's nothing new and they're just whipping an equine which has passed on, but overall a GH compiliation can be a great way to get into an artist, and as you say DJ, it can cut out all the crap. Of course, then again you may not get some of the artist's best, lesser-known work on a compilation, if it was never released as a single, like maybe Springsteen's "Jungleland" or a-ha's "Here I Stand and Face the Rain", so it can be looked at both ways really.

Let's be real, some artists should just go with a Greatest Hits EP.
