Title: Podcasts
Post by: jimmy jazz on Jan 28, 2023, 10:34 PM
What are you listening to? I enjoy Casefile quite a bit, I have tried one or two other crime pods and they're OK but not the same. Red-handed was one I tried. Two women comedians, but they make it all about themselves and not the case being discussed and I can't stand that.

The Casefile episodes about the EARONS, Yorkshire Ripper, Moors Murderers and Silk Road were all compelling listening and had me gripped.

Any recs?

I'm been listening to Where Were You in '92 lately. It's a generally enjoyable music podcast, though I feel like sometimes it's evident that the host is too young to fully understand the cultural landscape of the year he has chosen to focus on.

Recently, I listened to all the available episodes of The Outlaw Ocean, which is a fantastic, and sometimes very disturbing, podcast. It's basically about all the fucked up shit that happens in international waters, away from the jurisdiction of any government's laws. Episodes range from murder to illegal waste disposal, but all of them are excellent. The host is also responsible for the music, which is great all by itself.

I listen to Last Podcast on the Left for my comedy / true crime content (don't care much for ghosts, UFOs, etc). They just have great banter and chemistry and are just a lot of fun.

One of the guys from LPOTL also makes a music podcast with his wife called No Dogs in Space, so I listened to all of that too. It's great and very well researched.

Some other things I tried, but that are / were not as entertaining are Lore, Badlands and My Favorite Murder (although I've only heard S1 of that which was very messy. Maybe they've improved.)

I haven't heard Casefile, but I know the West case fairly well. It was recently covered by Last Podcast on the Left in a two-parter, I believe, but I'd also seen a tv documentary before that and the interview with the surviving daughter who wrote a book about her experience.

Horrific case for sure and even more so as there were children involved.

I don't know if anyone here listens to Dan Carlin (host of the excellent Hardcore History podcast), but his recent interview with Rick Rubin is fantastic. It can be found on standard podcast apps, but here's the YouTube link for anyone who's interested:

Yes and yes. He tends to only release a few episodes per year, but each one runs several hours, is well researched, well told, and well produced. The older stuff is pay-per-episode, but it's worth it. The four part Ghosts of the Ostfront is one of my favorite series of episodes of any podcast.

I'm not sure how much the brutality of the eastern front will cheer you up, but it is a very good podcast. Also, so you know, the Addendum, which the Rick Rubin interview is part of, is organized as a separate podcast and is mostly interviews. It's also good.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is legendary, of course! I listened to it before I considered myself a podcast listener. It's been a while since I checked it out last, though, so I appreciate the recommendation.

And Rick Rubin's definitely an interesting character :)

Hardcore history is by far the best history podcast

i actually paid for the wrath of the khans series and i rarely pay for anything incredible stuff

the stuff he did on WW1 is mind blowing as well - the details he goes into about the logistics

i thought about splurging for his entire everything but i'd rather find some way to download it for free

anyway this one i found really relevant to my present day life - sontag was big when i was in college

i like these - there are so many stories you probably won't get to - they do a good job of capsulizing it and still making it dramatic

i'd like to have time to read everything but i don't

I don't even like showing my phone to clerks when I'm door dashing when I'm listening to cumtown on YouTube because you just see the YouTube box in the corner of the screen with the big cumtown logo. I always think they must just assume I'm surfing porn. Which would probably be more respectable.

I'm big into stories of disappearances. I consume a lot of different podcasts/Youtube/etc about the subject, but one of my favorites is Trace Evidence. The host, Steven Pacheco, has a great voice and his model of going over all the facts in the case before examining some possible theories and their likelihood is just addictive.

In his older episodes, he used to include very subtle and quiet creepy backing tracks that I really loved - with his newer episodes, he's mostly abandoned that unfortunately - I like the ambiance - one of his better old episodes:

There was some Canadian podcast about the disappearance without a trace of an indigenous woman (many such cases...) that was really suspenseful until the final reveal which was them saying they haven't the foggiest who's behind it. That was a letdown. If you're not gonna tell me which truck driver named something like Garrett MacQuarrie assaulted her, strangled her and buried the body in the Manitoba wilderness then what are we even doing here?

I listened to a bit of Casefile a while ago, I remember enjoying a few eps. The most soothing accent.

Though the one I liked even more was Black Hands. It's about a 90s murder case down under, done by a journalist who spent years working on it. I really enjoyed it. Listened to it twice I think.

Ezra Klein did a couple really informative ones on teens and mental health recently

I didn't realize how much teen suicide has skyrocketed

Young people today are really fucking unhappy

also there's information about why traumatic experiences hit so hard and permanently betwen the ages of 11-16

when i think about what i went through during those years and then what i went on to do between 18-30

i'm a fucking survivor

nobody was going to knock the spirit out of me goddamnit

although i'll admit i don't think i would've made it if i was 16 today

i'd be dead

I've been listening to Last Podcast on the Left who has a series on The Manhattan Project. It's very good and gristly and covers a lot of stuff, like the heavy water sabotage operations in Norway, Iwo Jima and of course the bombs and survivor stories from Hiroshima and Nagasaki (some of the more grotesque and tragic stuff I've ever heard).

I'm planning on watching the Oppenheimer movie when it premieres next week, so that'll be interesting.

I stumbled upon this podcast called Black People Love Paramore which is funny that the episode that I ended up watching was the host actually interviewing Hayley Williams so that's probably like the holy grail episode. I don't know how long the podcast has been running(just found out that it has 56 episodes prior to this one) but she hit like the dream come true to be able to interview especially since the podcast is named after her band.

Good morning!

As I've had a lot more time alone in the house as of late, I've thought about starting to get more into podcasts. Does anyone here have any recommendations? I'd prefer to stay away from political or darker grittier content, or anything too deep, heavy or philosophical. I'm particularly looking for podcasts that are related to my interests and hobbies, if anyone knows any good podcasts that are about any of the following, do let me know!

Some interests I'm looking for at the moment:
Ambient music
Prog rock
Vintage fashion
Alternative sexuality and relationships
History of pop culture, especially internet culture
Writing, particularly writing nonfiction

Or anything else you think I might be into! Thanks in advance. <3

I've tried in the past, but my writing ideas, especially when it comes to fiction, take a lot of time to stew usually. When crafting an original narrative I am very slow paced. I also write a good deal of erotic shorts, but I don't think I could ever do a whole novel like that.

I'm currently working on a novel, though. I believe we may have talked about it, the one about the future where the atmosphere is all toxic to breathe. Tentative title is "My Poison Arms".

But honestly these days I have a lot more fun writing nonfiction such as my relationship journal.

Recently finished Your Own Backyard.

Absolutely fantastic podcast, gripping, compelling and staggering.

If you're into true crime give it a go and thank me later.

Has anyone ever thought about starting their own podcast?

What would it be about?

Would you have guests?

I thought I might see if my daughter would like to do a podcast with me at some point. The pitch is gonna be we both suggest something we like and we check those things out and comment on them.

So she might like something out of Pokémon and I'll comment on that and then she can comment on a Monty Python sketch or a Steely Dan song or something that I like.

It'd be for us sharing things, but also to let her try some production stuff and who knows.. it might turn out to be fun.

@jadis you seen this? Lol.

That intro from Adam is one of the funniest things I've ever seen him do.

The interview was trash. Finklestein is a charlatan. His views on Ukraine are so surface level he should really keep his mouth closed about it.  And the Nat Turners Rebellion defense of the Oct 7 attack, which I've seen him recently make the rounds with.  I don't agree with any of that.

Yes! A resounding yes. I'd love to have a non-scripted show with one or more co-hosts that I have good chemistry with. I could do a podcast on many of my interests, music, trans stuff, alternative relationships, synthesizers, etc.

The mister expressed some interest in helping me out with doing content, but his stance currently is that he doesn't want to host. So that's that.

If anyone here would be down to start something, I'd love to discuss the prospects further.

The mister can be a producer in the background helping you with topics and doing the soundwork.

So I have a friend I met at the gym that works the front desk and we want to do a podcast together. I do want to host but I'm also going to be the producer of the podcast as well. I have already come up with topics for our first 30 episodes. I will also be fielding inquires for sponsors. He will be the wildcard, he has great charisma and is super funny. I will be the more straight-laced personality that has to steer us back on topic lol. We are both kind of flagrant with our opinions but him a little bit more than me.  I also have guests scheduled for certain episodes already. He has this like catch phrase that he says all the time. He will say "Hear me out" then pause and then follow it up with "I got nothing". haha He wanted to name the podcast Hear Me Out but when I googled that name. There are like seven Hear Me Out podcasts already. My suggestion for the name of our podcast he doesn't like but when I googled it. It doesn't exist in any other form. So we will be the only one named that. It will be good for SEO. He doesn't get that.  I don't want to say the name of it until I actually set up our website and get the name set up on Spotify. I'm doing all the behind the scenes producer type work for the podcast and he's just a host. I'm co-host AND producer. I'm going to hire someone off of Fiverr to do thumbnails and to edit the podcast for YouTube. I'm not doing editing on my own that shit takes way too much time. I rather hire an expert. I'm also going to get a soundboard and mic set up soon. If not in January definitely in February.

The podcast is going to be based on mental health issues and how technology affects men's mental health. Our topics will be all over the place but we will tie certain topics back into men's mental health.

Literally nobody wants to hear me talk shit on a podcast but me and @Qwerty Sanchez considered doing a one off World Cup preview last year. Obviously we didn't do it. But it would have to be something I'm passionate and knowledgeable about. So it would be football.

Cool 🙂 Eager to hear this when / if it happens.

For, like, 10 seconds.

I will give you the links and stuff once we get it set up.

I also meant to say mental health and technology. I typo'ed and said technical earlier.

Nope but I'll try to watch the intro. I agree a thounsand percent about Norman. His one redeeming quality is that irl he's a really handsome motherfucker. Or at least was whenever I saw his talk a while ago in Canada. Also he can be pretty good at trash talk. Like an old timey mudslinging newspaper collumnist before things got PC. Very hyperbolic and crude and entertaining.

I can't bring myself to listen to any of my usual shows since Oct 7. Too fucking raw. Even the Israeli lady on the Tim Dillon show. I'll go back to all of it one day. I swear it's the first time in my life I that understand the concept of trigger warnings. Like, I obsessively consume jihadist propaganda on channels like this (https://www.instagram.com/arabsofcanada/?hl=en) (and all the Hamas snuff on Telegram of course) but the idea that a comedian I like would crack a joke about it is unbearable to me. Completely new territory.

Want to reply to you in the other thread and I will. I was busy having a week-long friendship-ending fight on Whatsapp with an old friend over Israel so had no emotional bandwith to engage with it elsewhere (except on Instagram of course, where I've been also been super busy). Also trying to prepare for the academic year which is finally opening here, with plenty of the students still drafted. Been thinking about some of the points you raised and want to reply as honestly and coherently as I can.
