Title: Standup comedy
Post by: jadis on Mar 22, 2023, 12:56 AM
Post whatever bits you find funny or painfully unfunny, see if i care

Really love this guy. Normally I don't care all that much when artists I love die cause whether Lou Reed or Kurtag or Joan Didion are still alive or not, the art's still there. But his death of cancer a year ago or so got me really sad.

Stand up comedy? Well, I like it a lot more than lie down comedy.

I dunno if you have ever watched any of these roast battles, but this is easily the most brutal one I've ever seen.  Featuring the one and only Nick mullen who eviscerated friend of Joe Rogan and former feminist Jamie Kilstein.

Also for the sake of keeping things active,  i was wondering do you intend this thread to be strictly stand-up on stage or could we post other forms of comedy like maybe O&A clips and convos featuring prominent comedians,  or even comedy sketches etc?

First of all, post everything you like and esp O&A clips because all I've heard is a couple of Patrice bits. And I'd love to discover more

I've actually been to a few of the Luis J Gomez-hosted roast battles at the old Stand, it ran during my two years in NYC. I was listening to Cum Town religiously and tried to catch the boys live as much as I could. One night one of the contenders was a chick who got roasted for being a massive slut. When I then came on to her after the show she wasn't impressed. "You just heard that I fuck everyone and decided to shoot your shot, right?" that kidn of thing. No hard feelings.

Don't remember hearing this one, I probably assumed everything with Kilstein is going to be cringe. Will watch

Btw Luis is great as the foil to Mullen and Tim Dillon but as a solo act he's pretty bad

Damn now I'm nostalgic for living in NYC during the Trump presidency and listening to CUm Town on the subway

Don't really watch stand up but Dave Chappelle's bit on Juicy Smoulliet was funny as fuck. "It sounds like something... That I would say!"

If anyone can suggest his best shows to watch and shit, that'd be great.

imo o&a is probably the best comedy show of all time, of any format.

I can say more about why that is but in a nutshell they had a constant stream of high quality comedian guests and an environment where they weren't just doing parts of their act to a straight man host but instead bouncing off one another in banter. On top of the guests,  two of the three hosts were comedian Jim norton and tin-knocker turned radio guy Anthony cumia. Both of them are hilarious in their own right. Opie is an unfunny cunt.

Here's a couple hilarious jim norton clips from the show. Patrice is in the first video as well. Kevin Pollak also makes an appearance towards the end of the 2nd video.

have you honestly not seen Chappelle Show?

Besides that, his 2017 netflix special was pretty good and so was Sticks and Stones overall. For as much heat as it got over the trans material, that wasn't even close to the majority of the material and the rest of it was all shit that would be funny to virtually any fan of his.

The most recent special he made i honestly couldn't finish.  Now it sounds like he's actually just preaching. Dunno if it's spite or just audience capture or what. But i feel like the comedic spark was gone.

I did like the snl monolog about kanye
Title: Re: Standup comedy

His SNL monologue about Kanye was brilliant:

"If they're Black, then it's a gang. If they're Italian, it's a mob, but if they're Jewish, it's a coincidence and you should never speak about it."

Admittedly, I'm sick of his trans material - not because I'm offended, but I just think there's other material out there he could ply from. But when he does the trans stuff, everyone freaks out and he gets headlines and publicity everywhere - probably why he continues to do it.

@Jwb not in its entirety no. Probably seen the odd clip on YouTube.

I saw the first 40 mins of Killing Them Softly the other night and tbh turned it off because it was boring and predictable. I'd be willing to give him another go though cos he has done some funny stuff.

i never thought he was that strong of a standup back in the day,  even though it's become trendy to pretend like that old material was better. I think the special he did in 2017 was my favorite.  But chappelle show is easily his most iconic work.  Just look up the rick James sketch, the black kkk guy and the R kelly  sketch. If you don't like any of those you can probably just give him a pass imo.

Honestly i get where you are coming from.  There was tons of great o&a content with them bashing and making fun of callers to the show and even people they interviewed.  I have tons of funny examples of that.

But i can't help but think that where the show reached its peak comedically, as well as what it later became famous for was when they would get a couple of comedians in studio and they would banter, crack jokes and shit on eachother.

It was somewhat similar in style to the show  Colin Quinn had on comedy central back in the early 00's,  named Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn.

That show was somewhat similar to Bill Maher's much better known "Politically Incorrect" in terms of the basic format of one host and 4 panelists bantering back and forth based on topics set by the host.

The main difference was that Tough Crowd was a comedy show with the pretense of covering relevant political topics, rather than a show based on showcasing political discourse with the occasional joke thrown in.

On Tough Crowd, the banter often took over the room and what started as a semi political discussion quickly devolved into the panelists just openly roasting one another.

Colin booked a number of comedians in the show including seinfield, chappelle. Louis c k., bill.burr etc

But his primary cast of comedians included guys like jim norton. patrice. kevin hart (before the fame),  rich vos, bob kelly, greg giraldo, nick dipoalo, Etc.

The show never made it past a couple seasons and though it retains a sort of cult following, the only way to watch it is on youtube in grainy clips that were uploaded years ago.

But since jim norton was a part of that same network of comedians, he introduced most of them to O&A. So they had a lot of episodes with multiple comedians in talking shit and bantering,  and that's sorta what the show became famous for. Heres a prime example of the sort of thing i mean, with a packed line up that you would only see on a special occasion.  In this case,  that occasion was roasting an old stand up routine by Jim norton.

I was watching a lot of comics when I lived in NYC for a couple of years pre-pandemic and have seen zero shows since. I'd mostly watch a bunch of people do 15 minute segments at The Stand. Don't remember who were the last ones I've seen or even what was the last solo show I've seen. Probably someone from the extended Cum Town universe

Last person I saw was Eddie Griffin he was headlining an event with some other comics for a V Day special type of event. Bill Bellamy was the host.

Tommy Davidson Adele Givens and Smokey Suarez was also at the event.

Adele Givens definitely stole the show and was at the best performance. She was way out of her league. She ran circles around the rest of those clowns.

You know, I don't think I've ever actually been to a standup show.

I feel like I've never really been a fan of specific comedians; usually I'll find individual jokes funny, but for me even people who have bits I like usually have a lot I don't as well. My favorite comedian in high school was definitely Mitch Hedberg; I was devastated when he died and a lot of his bits still live rent-free in my head.

The biggest names I've seen were David Cross and Tracy Morgan after he recovered from the accident. I had tickets recently to see Nick Mullen but had to work last minute so gave them to my ex. Very regrettable.

Dave Attell is my white whale, don't really care about seeing anyone else tbh. Excited to see Segura's new special. Recently very into Stavros and Tim Dillon and Sam Morril. In general, NY>LA

Sorry just seeing this - off the top of my head and doing no fact checking - essentially everything he accused Bobby of doing on Reddit wasn't totally out of nowhere, and some of the i.p. addresses did trace back to likely being Khalyla on alt accounts. It's also highly likely they did take that walk to his truck - she is absolute trash and openly admits that she feels "uncomfortable" by men that don't offer her validation as fuckable (not to mention how she brags about fucking her brothers and jerking off dogs growing up) - but liars gotta lie and instead of owning up to basically being a Reddit troll she spun this whole web of gaslit deceit until it ultimately ended her and Bobby's relationship.

She's a habitual liar and was very emotionally abusive toward Bobby and the whole thing really exposed her as the toxic narcissist she is.

The kicker for me is that Brenden isn't out there since like "see, I was right" - his story hasn't changed the whole time. He just put it out there and let the chips fall. The dude is an r-word and he needs to stop trying to do comedy but y'know, he wasn't exactly wrong.

Agreed on him needing to stop do comedy but interesting!

I always thought Bobby and her relationship was weird post breakup. Still living together while not being in a relationship.

I can understand that for people that are not as well off as a means to survive but they make good enough money that they don't need to live together out of the common man's struggle. So I can see that she probably still toys with him emotionally and mentally even after they have broken up.

Somehow I've only seen this attitude in women I found really unappealing. Like, it's a huge turnoff in and of itself but they were also serious dogs

Fucking her own brother otoh? Kinda hot. The level of sexual passion you need to disregard the taboo on incest is... impressive

No opinion on the dog thing, I hear it's just part of the culture in certain states?

Apropos of this Schwab guy... I have developed something like grudging respect for people who are terrible at something but persist. I'll never be able to listen to him but like props to him for trying. Maybe it's more impressive to see him "succeed" (whatever this means in his case) than someone like Nick Mullen, who's clearly talented

I think I'm finally over worshipping talent is what I'm trying to say

I honestly don't know what O&A is but I keep seeing it mentioned on here.

The video JWB posted was OK, the bit with the broom made me laugh but it wasn't as good as dibble dabble.

I find that with all stand up, there might be one or two short moments that make me laugh out loud but most of it is just me with a straight face. There's got to be someone out there who can make me laugh more than that.

This is why I rarely watch specials, tbh. Anyone can write and perform a funny joke, but I like comics that are just naturally, irrepressibly funny.

MSSP, Stuff Island, and War Mode are all pods I keep up with and find the banter consistently hilarious. Kind of homogenous as they're all from the same cut of East Coast cloth but I love the dawgs.

I've also recently started watching Kill Tony - great for consistent laughs if you can get past Tony Hinchcliff's bitchy demeanor.

Since no one else answered. O&A stands for Opie and Anthony. Two boring unfunny dickheads that come from the shock jock era of comedians.

Think Howard Stern if you don't know what a shock jock is. They ended up beefing with Howard Stern at one point in time then they split off to do their own show. It all sucks. They try to be edgy for the sake of being edgy.

I will always remember this one time that a homeless man was eating a cake and they went out on the street and took the cake from the homeless man ont he street and just threw it. At first I thought they did it for shock and they were going to replace the cake off camera but nope those assholes didn't do anything like that.

found the video, I mis remembered. They stomped on it instead of throwing it but still fucking dickheads like I said.
Title: Re: Standup comedy
Post by: Jwb on Oct 07, 2023, 02:36 AM
That was opie lol.  He was the only one in the group who had no comedic talent so he had to resort to that kind of shit to get a shock laugh.

To more properly explain O&A, it did originate from the shock jock genre of radio but by the time they were on Satellite they were much more dynamic than that.  They had such a consistent stream of comedians on the show for long form conversations that would last a couple hours.  There's literally hundreds of hours of content from guys like Patrice, Louis CK, Bill Burr, etc. The show was famous for getting a handful of these guys around along with anthony and jim which would make for an incredibly sharp room where everyone was eager to take shots at eachother.

"Down The Line" was a phone-in radio show created by comedians (Paul Whitehouse from The Fast Show etc.) which aired on BBC Radio 4 around 2006-2009. I think mainstream radio phone-ins are still a kind of a rarity or clumsy communication format, and the show took advantage of this to the max. They play on stereotypes, accents and the things which bothered people back then. Hilarious.
