Title: Newcomers - introduce yourself here!
Post by: Guybrush on Jan 10, 2023, 09:54 AM
Hi there, Guest :)

Edit: If you're a newcomer, don't forget to check out our Newbie's Guide to SCD (https://scd.community/index.php?topic=460.0)!

Although chances are you MB veterans already know me, I thought it might be good to make an introduction thread here. I'm a norwegian and I've now entered my forties. I'm married and I gots me two kids. By education, I am a biologist, but my work is in wastewater management.

In my spare time, I sometimes try to be a musician in our band Gladlaksene or with one of my various solo projects. I have a recording studio at home where I try to produce some music from time to time. I play a bit of drums, guitar, some piano and I can do most things on my own besides singing. I can usually hit the notes if they're in my range, but my voice just makes an awful sound.

Other than that, I'm a big consumer of various pop culture, especially things in the fantasy / horror genre, although my tastes admittedly sometimes border on snobbish. When it comes to music, I listen to jazz to relax, pop to get energized and various flavours of avantgarde music if I want a more profound listening experience. Some artists I might enjoy these days are Billie Holiday, Aksak Maboul, Frank Zappa and Tears for Fears. Yes, I realize I have the music tastes of your basic baby boomer.

Some other things that interest me are astronomy, skepticism, visual arts, weird foods and.. Oh, I've been active on forums for about 20 years and also like running web-apps and so on, which is part of why I'm attached to this.

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome, Guybrush! Of course we have met before on another forum, and I remember that our musical tastes overlap, or sometimes don't.

Congrats on being an active participant in the making of music. I've never had the talent or patience to try anything like that, hence being a lisna instead. Jazz, rock, world sums up the types of music I most often listen to I think.

I also soak up a lot of pop culture; more than I care to admit of YouTube, Netflix, etc., but when I overdose on tv, books, music I have a cheap remedy that has given me lots of pleasure: clearing my head with a long a walk or a bike ride.

Good luck with this new forum, Guybrush.

Thanks, Lisna! I'm very happy to see you here :)

My own method for clearing my head is usually playing some music or gaming. Not as healthy as taking walks, unfortunately, and gaming sometimes keeps me up at night

Haha, thanks for the appeals :)

Me and Trollheart will put our heads together eventually. The current proposal is to find some roles for our moderators so that they have some defined responsibility beyond just being a mod. We're not planning on being very demanding in terms of work, but maybe someone can try and keep the forum events alive and well while another works to promote journals or album reviews, etc.

I also think there should be a yearly mod team zoom/teams meetup with the mods team so we can have a chat about where we are in terms of goals, plans for the future, etc.

We'll make a thread about it at some point soon, probably.

It has potential.

By the way, about that Guest. What's up with the rampant Oedipus complex? I know they find their parents hot, but that's just messed up.

Better put in this disclaimer: this joke targets the reader by the use of the [you] bbcode.

Hello! I hope everyone over here is doing well. I decided to make an account and see what was up, seems cool so far!

I'm the Mrs. Waffles, former The Other Site lurker extraordinaire. I'm in my early thirties, and am a passionate music lover, especially rock and electronic music. I also enjoy baking, writing, vintage fashion and beauty, cheesy movies, and YouTube video essays.

I used to play keyboards in a couple small local bands in my teens and twenties, but I haven't made anything more than personal little noodles since I left my last band in January 2011.

Looking forward to talking with you all!

Glad to be here! Just a small few of my favorites would be, in rough chronological order: Tangerine Dream, Genesis, Yes, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Devo, Klaus Schulze, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Pantera, Korn, Faith No More, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Lady Gaga, My Chemical Romance, Dorian Electra, Suicide Silence, the list goes on.

I'd describe my taste as some kind of nexus between a 70s prog nerd and a late 90s mall goth, haha.

Cool! We have some overlapping musical interests, then, at least in the world of 70s prog :)

I was never a goth, but was nevertheless part of a mainly goth online community that existed on IRC in the 90s and up until around the turn of the century (wow, getting old). I definitely listened to a lot of Sisters of Mercy and The Cure at some point with a bit of Bauhaus and Siouxsie etc. sprinkled on. That's a long time ago now, though.

Tore, thanks so much for the welcome!  I feel like I'm in an alternate universe, but it's my responsibility to familiarize myself with the surroundings - and I will!  In the meantime, hi everyone and great to see many familiar names from MB here.   :D

My first question is:  How do I make an avatar, lol?

I'm very pleased to see you here, ribbons  :D

To change your avatar, look for your personal menu. If you're on your phone, it's centered on top of the page. If you're on a PC or tablet, it's probably up to the right. In your case, it should look like your placeholder missing avatar.

Pressing/clicking it brings up a menu. Look for Profile details :)

Hello Guybrush, Trollheart, Lisnaholic, Janszoon, OccultHawk, Tristan, RubberSoul, Comus, Synth, and ribbons (ribbons!), and others I've missed,

Thank you for the welcome, Guybrush!

I am happy to see familiar names and know that you are all still out there, hopefully well.

Here is some updated information about me:

* I have now been vegan for more than 25 years and I am still alive, last time I checked, which is...now.

* I love wearing my N95 masks!  I have worn nothing else during the pandemic.  They are comfortable, lightweight, inexpensive, and protective.  When I go outside and see another N95 mask-wearing person in the crowd of maskless faces, my first thought is, "I love you."

* I love exercising while watching Netflix shows, currently Viking Valhalla Season 2.  I also love K-dramas.  Love love love them.

* I have the blood pressure of a baby!

* I really enjoy people I've met through an online community setting, which allowed me to make two of my closest IRL friends. People's minds, expressed so purely through written words on a forum, are often so enchanting and endearing, aren't they?  When I read people's posts, I often think, "Your brain is so, so, so CUTE and FUNNY!"

* I still love making music, but I have not been able to compose as much as I would like during the last 5 years. This is due to a variety of choices, based on shifting priorities, and life changes causing time constraints. But, I hope to get back into it!  I was really touched when five years ago some Frenchman surprised me by creating a Youtube video of little recorder trio compositions of mine that I'd uploaded to Free-scores.com (a great French repository of free sheet music and new compositions). When I composed those songs for fun, I didn't realize that there are a bunch of Recorder Trio groups playing in churches and cathedrals and basements around the world, eager for new recorder music!

[MCC#6] Pieces for Recorder Trio (Erica Beay)

* I still sometimes get (((obsessed))) with a song, listening to it 100+ times until I am satiated, while I work on tasks.  Below is one of the songs I was obsessed with a couple years ago:

Not Real Anymore - by Dreaming of Ghosts

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE WELCOME AND FOR BUILDING THIS NEW COMMUNITY!

I look forward to learning more about you all on the forum.

At first, I thought this forum might be about Scottish Country Dance (SCD) or Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). ;)  But, lo and behold, it is Something Completely Different!

Thanks so much, ribbons!  I feel the same way about (((you))). I am so happy to see you here! Is that you and your goat(s) plus human in your avatar?? You are always so sweet, eloquent, even-tempered, and thoughtful -- the opposite of a "Little Brain," a reference to one of my favorite movies, "Defending Your Life":

Hey, Erica! So nice to see you on board and good to see you're alive and well <3

I also really like your composition. The way its produced here, it kinds reminds me of something out of the moomins cartoon TV show. So quirky! I might look up that sheet music if it's available on that site :)

(((Erica))), thank you.  LOL - it's been a long time since I've used triple parentheses around your name.  I've always thought the parentheses represented a hug (and that's my intention here), but then someone on MB said it represents something derogatory, far-right, and even antisemitic.  Who would have thought?  ::) But it will remain a big hug for you.

No, that is not a pic of me and another human and lamb.  It's a photo of Paul and Linda McCartney - and lamb!  I'm a major Paul and Linda AND lamb stan.  :D

I see I have a new film to watch.  That trailer was funny!

VEGANGELICA !!! So nice to see you again after so long! I often wondered how you were doing after leaving MB, and I'm glad to hear that you've come out the other side of the intense covid years. I wear a KN95, which is the Chinese version of N95: comfortable and effective, but I can't say I love wearing it. I'm all vaccined up, but got covid in the end, back in November. No serious symptoms, which was just as well because where I work, covid entitles you to just 4 days off sick, which is crazy policy when it takes longer than that to be non-contageous, afaik.

...and welcome to this new forum, ribbons! I was also wondering about your avatar; I assumed it was you cuddling up to Paul McCartney and I was hoping you had a bit of IRL gossip to report to us  ;)

There's no doubt that MB's environment is often toxic and that some of the people there are just waiting for the opportunity to interpret what you write in the worst possible way and then attack you for it.

I hope we can avoid that kind of hostile atmosphere festering here.

Of course we can. I don't have any malice towards you or anyone really. That was a period where I felt rather vulnerable and hurt and one person in particular (not you) seemed to want to take advantage of that. I'm sure you remember my infamous goodbye thread there.

I do hope things are getting better for you out in the real world. God knows I know life can suck sometimes but there really is beauty out there if you look hard enough. So, yeah, let's start with a clean slate, okay? :)

Am I allowed to post my writing in the creator forum if it's very R rated?

Hi. Thank you.

Yeah I haven't posted a whole lot at Music Banter.

And great, I will then.

Ah, okay :) Norway here. When I signed up on MB about 15 years ago, I was living in Longyearbyen on Svalbard. It's another frozen hellscape. Now I'm about as far south in the country as I can get.

Cool, I'd like to see Canada. There were a few students from Canada on Svalbard so I know a few canadians.

I take it you're a metal fan then? I'd guess our biggest musical export is black metal :) or used to be, at least.

I dabble in many genres, but I mostly prefer the more ethereal stuff from that region. But I've been getting into the black metal. I like all the "post-metal" stuff though it technically isn't a genre.

Hey everyone, it's jadis

Nice to see you here Rob!

To everyone else, don't fall for his "Winnipeg is a frozen shithole" spiel, it's actually pretty great in some ways imho though it does get a bit rough in the winter. The cultural scene is rich and fascinating. Guy Maddin alone is as compelling a justification as you could get for any city's existence and there's so much else besides.

Cumtown making fun of Steve Harvey is funny yeah. As a target for comedy he's pretty funny.  And I'm not the most familiar with his stand up so I am not about to just write him off as a comedian completely.  But what I have seen has been underwhelming.i feel like either him or DL were the weakest set on the kings of comedy and the only reason I can't rank them specifically is cause neither of them were memorable.  The order for best comedians on the kings of comedy goes:

1) Bernie Mac
2) Cedric
3) who cares?

I don't get why that would be age restricted tbh.

But yeah looks like the full episodes of world peace are currently on youtube.  They were before and they gotten taken down probably for copyright strikes so it'll probably get taken down again.  But it was definitely a pretty interesting sketch show imo.

Thanks! Guy got me interested with the Abyss part of the forum and that's what drew me in (I'm currently coming up with some ideas for threads there). I checked this place out I think the first day Guy made the post about it on MB and thought about joining but didn't at the time - I haven't checked back in since. Checking in today, gotta say, I'm really surprised by how many people decided to join.

If a forum is more dead than MB, not much point in joining it but that doesn't appear to be the case here. Lots of people and lots of discussion. And of course, it'll serve as another enjoyable way for me to waste company hours when nothing is on fire.

So uhh...anyone here get banned yet?

Hello SCD community! TH generously invited me to share a bit of my writing to this forum, so I'm going to post an intro here and a few new threads on the subjects of hobbies and a query about music-making hardware to test the waters.

For my introduction, I thought I'd share my unparalleled drive for musical exploration. For those who know me well from MB or WP, forgive the recap, but I'll share in case this interests any newcomers.

I've invested considerable resources building an independent music library of over 300,000 soundworks, developed and delivered a series of music lectures around the city, meticulously curating special collections, publishing quarterly reports and infographics, and worked to educate the community about experimental sound art. It's my greatest passion and my life's work.

These efforts culminated in my authoring and publishing a 1,716-page multi-volume interdisciplinary ethnomusicological treatise spanning 20th century analog classicism to contemporary digital modernity. It's basically a series of books chronicling my adventures from more than a decade of musical exploration. Here's a shot of the cover!

In the opening chapters, I delve into an intimate examination of how I identify with music. Therein I state that, perhaps the most revealing thing about me is the artistic/musical period with which I align myself - the post-minimalist modern classical movement. It is a pendulumic reactionary counterpoint to the mathematical elegance of minimalism, balancing its cerebral "music as a gradual process" precision with elements of natural, organic gentleness and expressiveness.

These works are thoughtful, highly contemplative, and provide a spectacular sonic environ for introspection. There is a graceful and cultivated intimacy to the music which speaks to me on a very personal level. These mature soundscapes evoke consideration, empathy, and place an emphasis on subtle and refined characteristics which are exquisitely beautiful when someone has the patience to embrace them but which tragically go unnoticed in the accelerated world of instant gratification.

Each of these musical properties resonates directly with my own character and values. I am this music.

I particularly enjoy minimalist music - compositions which employ static harmony, quasi-geometric transformational linearity and repetition, gradual additive or permutational processes, phase-shifting, and static instrumentation. I am captivated by the metamusical properties which are revealed as a result of strictly carried-out processes. Many of these recordings explore non-Western concepts like pure tuning, (e.g. pure frequency ratios and resonant intervals outside the 12-pitch piano scale), unmetered melodies like those of Carnatic ragas, and drones.

As Roland Barthes describes, "...it is each sound one after the next that I listen to, not in syntagmatic extension, but in it's raw and as though vertical signifying: by deconstructing itself, listening is externalized, it compels the subject to renounce his 'inwardness.'"

I'm always interested in exploring new sounds and don't limit myself to any closed set of styles. As John Cage wisely said:

"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason."

I also tried my hand at crafting a handy infographic - a Fruchterman-Reingold graph depicting the web-like interrelationships between my 60 favorite sub and micro-genres, (as I do so adore metadata).

It effectively sums up my musical interests. I'd enjoy reading from members with similarly intensive passions!

I'm pretty sure Exo said he wasn't interested. I'm trying to unlock Key (!) but I'm not getting any response. I'd also look at maybe DJ, Fetcher, Carpe Mortem (the last two have not been active recently though), Mucha na Dziko, Scarlett O'Hara (Vanilla/Celladorina), WWWP and maybe Freebase, Goofle and TheBig3. Also Yorkedaddy and maybe Karice. And Saulaac.

we could each target one or two from this list if anyone wants, see how the land doesn't tell the truth all the time and sometimes stretches credibility?

Glad to hear. Things have been pretty good on this side as well. Look forward to seeing ya around here. Nice to see the gaming journal is back as well, always enjoyed following along and seeing your thoughts on some of the games that I plan on getting to.

Yeah I have been enjoying talking about video games for a long time now so I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. I'm looking forward to this one taking off and I've already begun work on this months theme month. It'll be a fun one too so hope you find something fun to read about. It's where I'll be spending a majority of my time anyway. :)

There will be more on Jedi Survivor but I think I'm going to wait until I finish the game to give my absolute final thoughts on it. In the meantime, I'll be updating for video game month.

Hi all!
I'm a former MB member, inactive for a number of years (different username  ;)  ). I returned to see if the old turquoise girl was still alive but there didn't look to be much life in her. A ghost town pretty much. So I stumbled across a link this place and saw a few familiar usernames.

Anyway, howdy.

Hi everyone,
I have come over from MB (joined in 2022), so I'm very happy to make the jump and sign up here instead of just lurking. As I am not a multi-tasker I'll probably stop posting over there and just come here from now on.

Congrats to Guybrush and Trollheart for setting up SCD  :thumb:. I hope to contribute in a meaningful way. I do have a tendency to lean towards what seems to be the more commercial/cliché end of jazz, 80s jazz fusion, TV scores (ah gawd!), so obvs need to keep reading up on all other genres and artistic expression in general.

Hope to see ya around!

Might be your posting style. If you make three posts to write something that could easily be presented as one post, that may be interpreted as an attempt to get to a post count of 15 in order to post a link advertising something.

It's a common occurrence, so mods on musicbanter learn to be on the lookout for new members who rack up short posts.

You'd probably like faggots. If you get a chance to try them then do so. Actually I think we may have poke bout this before lol.

I'm not sure if it was intentional but that was the funniest fucking typo I've ever seen anyone post online.

Literally rolling omg

Edit: ok apparently it's another type of food. Well isn't there egg on my face. Or meat, rather. I'm too American to know that I guess lmfao.

I've never been to Scotland, but would love to go. God damn Islay whiskys are so delicious. Supposedly, I own a square foot or yard or something of the moors where Laphroaig get their peat and if I ever go there, they're supposed to give me waders and a hip flask so I can wade out there and have a nip. Too bad I'm a teetotal now.

I had a girlfriend in the Netherlands for a while, so been there a whole bunch, although that was nearly 20 years ago now. I miss french fries with satay sauce and mayonnaise 🍟

I'd say whisky is rubbish anyway, I have enjoyed a dram now and then for some special occasions but there is tons of other stuff to see and do.

You should still visit the moors, that would be pretty cool to see where your plot is. Years ago lots of castles and estates sold off the 1 square foot of land to raise funds to restore their castles and lands around it in exchange for a lord/lady title.

It feels silly at this point to ever doubt Mahomes and Reid.. Being said, my dark horse pick I'm riding on is Seattle. I think last year exposed how Russ was actually holding them back, and Pete is a better coach than he got credit for. Plus I think they got better this off-season, and have an amazing home field advantage. I dunno, I'm rocking with it. I'm an ATL fan and excited for this season too... Hated them drafting Bijan but they are truly zagging with their offensive approach and I'm ready to see what happens. That division is pure anus.

I'll take Bills in the east. Jets are being overvalued imo because of Rodgers and I don't trust Tua to not get concussed.

You sports gamble at all?

Ah, nice! We actually just saw Alkaline Trio in Chicago last month opening for Fall Out Boy. Your playlist has a lot of bands I like, especially The Wonder Years (who I saw last year playing my two favorite albums of theirs in full), The Get Up Kids, Turnover, great stuff.

Some of my favorite bands that fall under the admittedly blurry umbrella of emo (I guess most of it you could call post-hardcore or pop punk) would be Silverstein, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Senses Fail, Armor for Sleep, Motion City Soundtrack, Saosin, Four Year Strong, lots of others. I was definitely what you would call a scene kid in high school and a lot of my taste as a young teenager was informed by that 2000s wave. Still have a ton of nostalgia for that sound and era.

Thanks for rubbing it in! I've never seen Wonder Years or Alkaline Trio. They're pretty much the only bands I'd die to see but haven't. No Closer To Heaven is probably my favorite album ever.

Your music taste rules and I'm guessing we're roughly the same age. I have major nostalgia for The Used in particular. Them, TBS and Brand New were my must-listens in high school. I was into all those bands you listed at varying degrees. I always weirdly resented how MCR was the face of that style of music around that time tho so I've always kinda sipped the Haterade on them.

I did a little art project in my man cave last year that was a really fun experience. You may recognize most of these albums in the frames (https://i.ibb.co/6H8bh2y/A678070-F-82-F9-44-C9-8-E0-E-BFE304-D6-BAC3.jpg)

That's so cool! I'm 34, and I'm also a big fan of Finch and TBS. The Wonder Years show was so incredible, my throat was absolutely shredded by the end of the night from singing along. I think they're doing some kind of 10th anniversary tour for The Greatest Generation soon, so that might be a good opportunity to see them.

And thank you for the compliment on my taste, yours is dope too! I don't generally bring up my emo kid past much on here, I guess I still have a bit of ingrained caution from the old days lurking on MB and seeing anyone who posted about liking 2000s mall emo getting roasted alive, haha. But yeah, my 2003-2008 or so was defined in large part by that scene, and it wasn't really until I discovered prog rock in 2006 and MB in late 2007 that I started branching out musically.

Still have a lot of love for those bands and styles though, and it's so great to have a fellow appreciator of them on here!

I love Finch! I saw them twice in the last few years in Pittsburgh and it was the tw worst crowds I've literally ever been a part of. Not a single person knew any of their songs and the lead singer actually started heckling the crowd. It was bizarre and I felt bad for them cause they sounded amazing and brought energy.

That Wonder Years show sounds amazing. I did see they're touring but doubt I'll get to go! I moved to the middle of nowhere and have a daughter now so going to shows has been shoved to the back burner for a few years but I'm hoping to change that! I'm also 34 and kinda skipped a generation of emo-ish music and now I'm kinda back with bands like Spanish Love Songs, Heart Attack Man, Niiice, Arms Length, Etc.

They won't be as nostalgic for you but there's a band named Spraynard I'm a big fan of from like a decade ago that would be worth checking out I think!

Glad someone with similar tastes is around here

I have similar tastes. I just don't talk about them much and because I listen to so much and different genres I'm always skipping around. I haven't gone back to listening to emo/post hardcore in awhile but I feel like I'm going to end up getting back into listening to symphonic metal that I listened to in college.

Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, MCR, Saosin and a few others that you mentioned in the other post were getting regular plays from me back then.

Hello everyone, I'm glad to be here around people that like to talk about music and other stuff.

I discovered this forum over from Music Banter, yes.

I'm 27 and I live in Brazil. I really love rock music and bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, Melvins, Alice In Chains, Oasis, The Clash, even The Misfits etc.

I wanna record a single until December, just need to find the right people. I like to create my own music.

I'm on Discord almost every day, so if you ever want to share something or sending a DM here, feel free to do it.

I'm going to start a course in the next month, I'm excited. It involves music.

That's it.

I enjoyed it. It's definitely an album that should be listened to straight-through as a whole piece (which is not super hard considering the running time lol). Wasn't obsessed with all the songs individually, but I did really enjoy "only have eyes for 2" and "a dry red". How about you?

I really enjoy the house music I've listened to like azealia banks and the new beyonce album, but I'm not super familiar with the genre. How about you? Any recommendations?

For Janelle Monae, I would definitely start with her debut album Metropolis. It has some really interesting storytelling that lays the groundwork for themes in her subsequent albums. I've honestly never heard anything like it- I thought it was a movie soundtrack after my first listen-through. From there I'd go to The ArchAndroid or Dirty Computer. "Oh Maker" off of archandroid is my favourite song of all time, but that might be the ex-catholic in me talking lol

Hi all, I'm a noob.

My name is Hope and I've lived in The Netherlands for 12 years now. I live in Rotterdam, a fairly modern city as most of the old buildings were leveled during WWII and they had to start over. As a US Air Force veteran I am from many places in America. I was born in Virginia and have mostly lived in the Eastern states. I'm married, with a cat. I enjoy listening to lots of different music and being creative. If I'm not listening to music I always have my comfort shows playing in the background, Family Guy, American Dad, Bob's Burgers, The Simpsons, and Futurama. I've been looking for a new community for a long time so I hope I'm welcome here, I wiped my feet.

I also haven't been active on forums since around that time. I used to lurk on MB to get music recommendations though.

No worries 🙂

Why did you move to The Netherlands?

I've only been to Rotterdam once and not long enough to get a really good impression, but it seemed a lot more modern than Amsterdam and perhaps less boring than The Hague.

I miss the french fries with mayonnaise and satay sauce.

I was a child in the 80's so I have a real soft spot for 80's music. Beyond that I listened to a lot of Rock and Alternative in the 90s, spent 20 solid years listening to almost nothing but Electronica. I kind of lost interest a bit when I moved abroad and moved on to Jazz and a little World and whatever else I can get my hands on. Generally I like a bit of everything from the 1920's til now. My latest fascination however is ...Post Malone. My husband hates it.

How about you?

I met my husband on a music forum in 2004. We were friends until 2009 when we started talking off the board. We met and flew back and forth for a couple years and then I made the big move over in 2011. We got married in 2017.

I like fries with "Special Sauce" It's a glob of mayo with a glob of curry sauce and a generous helping of chopped onions on top. Nom nom nom.

Thanks. Yeah the good food is one of the main selling points for recruiters. It depends on which facility you eat at though. Some are better or worse than others.

Ah, cool! I listen to a huge amount of electronic music as well, mostly in the ambient, space music and new age styles but I like a lot of dance stuff as well. I'm also a big synthesizer nerd so I'll be predisposed to most music that uses synths. I was born in the late 80s and grew up on a lot of late 90s and early 2000s alt rock as well, I was definitely what you'd call an emo kid in high school. But I'm pretty diverse as well, I'll listen to stuff ranging from 1930s swing and big band to brutal death metal and a lot more.

I can't say I'm a big Post Malone fan, haha. My fiance listens to mostly modern rap and whatever's on top 40 radio so I feel like he'd be more inclined to jam his music.

At any rate, you seem super cool and I look forward to chatting more!

I don't know what Post Malone sounds like, but am very happy to have you on board @MonaSomona and hope you like it here 🙂

I also have a slightly similar story, although mine took a different turn. I met my previous girlfriend on a gaming forum (for the game Anarchy Online) around 2002 I think and we hooked up in 2003. She was an American living in The Hague and from 2003 to 2005, I'd visit The Hague like every other month or so.

But we eventually broke up, so I'm still here in Norway 🙂

I was like a country bumpkin back then, so visiting Amsterdam and The Hague was pretty cool. And then later New York where she came from.

I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon, but for years I've wanted to do something like a tour of the US. I got friends and family to visit and it'd be cool to see some of you guys too if we're in similar vicinities 🙂

I have family around Boston, a very good friend in Houston and my wife wants to see New York and San Francisco. I wouldn't mind seeing Los Angeles, etc.

So it's a tall order if we're doing it all at once. Maybe when we're pensioners 🙂

Maybe split it into different trips where one time you explore the North East of the US then the South so you can hit up Texas and then do a West Coast related trip.

Bro Lance just did not show up this preseason - I had high hopes and feel let down tbh. Darnold stole the show, what else can I say. Purdy's my boy and I'm amped for Sunday.

You know who I've really got my eye on this season though? Fucking Trevor Lawrence and Calvin Ridley. What a duo.

I'm an unabashed Darnold stan - he's been on nothing but shitty teams with shitty head coaches thus far in his career, and most people have completely written him off. But man, can he throw a beautiful deep ball. Shanahan just needs to tighten up his decision making, like Steve Wilks started to do near the end of the season last year after Rhule got fired. And with all the weapons SF has, I think he'll seriously prosper. Not that I want Purdy to be injured, but purely based on SF's recent QB history, Darnold will probably get some regular season playing time, and I can't wait to see it. I think a lot of pundits will have to eat crow.

Yeah, Lance still needs to develop. I hope he gets an opportunity in Dallas. Things just didn't go well with him in San Fran, much of it not his fault. And how many prospective QB1s get shown up by a third stringer (Mr. Irrelevant)? Just unlucky for Lance.

Jags do look dangerous. And their division completely sucks, so they'll almost surely be in the playoff picture this season again. As a Chiefs fan, I'd love to see them embarass the Chargers again. What a complete turnaround in one season going from Urban Meyer as head coach to Dougie P.

It's still way too early to do a Super Bowl prediction, but I don't care - I'm predicting it's gonna be a Chiefs v Niners rematch.

Perhaps more fun of a prediction - when will Trevor Lawrence finally get a haircut?

So you only like blonde male haircuts when they'd be a better basis for a hair metal wig than you?

My jimmies never rustled for Jimmy G tbh. Vegas can have him, maybe he'll show up for them.

And yeah I guess it's a formative thing - the spandex and the long, straight, thick blonde look reeks of masculinity a la glam rock. Also, this might be why I'm queer. Lol.

I'm straight, but even so, if the Raiders don't work out for Jimmy G, there's always Calvin Klein. He's probably more suited for that then selling his pastrami sandwiches via Subway anyways. Guy is a class act, despite his frequent injuries and occasional terribly timed interceptions.

I hear ya, my father is the typical conservative men-should-act-like-men kinda guy, but he loves hair metal - grew up in the '80s. There's some hair metal I like, but whenever we talk music (and he mocks rap music or electronic music), I can always irritate him by saying something akin to: "Who wants to listen to cheesy power chords by dudes who dress up like chicks anyway?"

If the Super Bowl isn't Chiefs-Niners, I'd love it to be Jets-Niners, just to see the Niners break Rodgers' heart one more time.

I'm not into long hair on guys generally. A little bit sure, but if it's long enough to put into any kind of ponytail I'm out.

And on a funny side note I just found out a couple weeks ago that my fiancé is graying and has been dying his hair since before we were even dating. My mind was absolutely blown, somehow he dyes it frequently enough that I just never noticed.

Quote from: DJChameleon on Aug 31, 2023, 11:48 AMMaybe split it into different trips where one time you explore the North East of the US then the South so you can hit up Texas and then do a West Coast related trip.

I miss Bob. I went down to Florida to meet up with him and Roxy. I'm super close to Exo and he's even come within 15 mins of me but we didn't even know we were that close to each other or even planned a meet up. I will soon though.

I planned to meet up with holdyoualways but it didn't work out. She's super close to where I live too.

When you decided to do the New York trip, I could be your unofficial tour guide, which tourist traps to avoid and which underrated foodie spots to hit up, etc.

Now I'm curious. What would be your Mexican of choice? Best borough for food? Toloache and Queens for me.

Also, are there any actually good restaurants on Arthur Ave? Each time I've eaten there it was straight up cafeteria food. Which btw is exactly what Gordon Ramsay said about the cooking of some Arthur Ave chef who went on one of his programs.

La Contenta in East Village, if you want other options outside of tacos and quesadillas. Los Tacos No. 1 is the best tacos spot imo. They have a couple of locations and they are all pretty good even the Times Square location.

I don't eat on Arthur Ave so no comment.

Dua should 'dua' straight up house record. It would be awesome if her label pulled in different DJs/producers to do each track.

CamelPhat, Eli & Fur, Tchami, Don Diablo, KREAM, Oliver Heldens, it'd be a banger, and her voice works great with house tunes.

What about Fred? Though he may have worked with her before tbh.

Fred is becoming the Coldplay of dance music in terms of reputation. Seeing a lot of tweets about how he's shit and dance music for people who don't like dance. Mostly from the early 20s crowd. Think it's bollocks myself and I was listening to dance twenty odd years ago. No way is he shit.

The "Coldplay of dance music"?  These people probably just parrot talking points from Pitchfork writers and Anthony Fantano. Fred is great and his style is definitely unique among other contemporary DJs. That being said, I'm not sure if his style is a natural fit for Dua - it would be interesting to hear how a collaboration like that would turn out.

I was thinking Tchami might be able to push her in a different and compelling direction. I know he's done production work for Lady Gaga before, so he's not new to this. If he brought back his old school style with Dua singing, he could put out some heat. But I definitely want some Dua vocal chops.

And I'm a KREAM stan, but I do think they'd be a really natural fit for Dua - I don't think either KREAM or Dua would need to change up their styles much to mesh well.

Oh another option - John Summit. He's literally at the top of his game right now. Imagine him producing tracks like this for Dua. Hell yeah.

Hi, I don't think I'm too familiar with anyone but that's a hell of an introduction post.

Had an account over on MB but always found it hard to navigate, even more so on mobile. Anyways, television and music are my main focus these days. I love pop culture, but also love researching underground scenes. Hopefully someday there's an underground television scene akin to film or music. Anyways, glad to be here.

What are member journals though? Like diary posts?

Welcome to SCD!

Journals are like your own little blog, they can be general places for your thoughts or more specifically themed. I use mine as a listening log for music.

And I also love underground scenes! I'm fascinated by subcultures and their development and histories. What kind of music and television are you into?

Oh I see, that makes sense.

Music wise, I'll listen to anything once. Whether it's the latest American pop star or a Tibetan throat singer from the early 1900s. My favorite all encompassing genre is Rhythm & Blues for sure, with a subtle preference as far as subgenres go for Funk and Soul music. I find it easy to have appreciation for both the mainstream and underground scenes of any genre though.

Television wise, I'll be the first to admit I lean more snobby in regards to what I actively pursue. Meaning a lot of my favorite series are probably from FX or HBO, labeled "prestige" with more complete storytelling and character writing. For comedy series I'm more lenient, Abbott Elementary is pretty good, but I hate Friends. Some of my favorite series are: The Wire, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Friday Night Lights. As far as "currently" airing, I thought the last seasons of Righteous Gemstones & The Bear were brilliant. Twisted Metal is a sleeper hit for the year so far for me too.

Yours?

Nice! I'm not really an expert in R&B, but I do like funk a lot, what I know anyway. And I love Prince. It's good that you're so open minded! I have my preferences (mostly alternative rock, prog rock and various forms of electronic music) but I generally have respect for most every genre as art forms, so I get you for sure.

For TV, I don't really watch much of it on my own time anymore, especially not serial stuff since I mostly have TV on in the background so I don't always focus the best on it. But I do love Mad Men and some of my other favorites in my bigger TV watching days would be Seinfeld, Community, Scrubs, The Office, Fresh Prince, I Love Lucy, mostly comedy stuff.

I think you and my fiance @Mr. Waffles will get along for sure, he's always watching "prestige" kind of gritty serial drama stuff.

Welcome! Man, I love Righteous Gemstones. I got the wifey hooked on it and we binged through the first and second season so quickly and then we watched the 3rd season as it was still being released.  Twisted Metal was awesome, idk why it got slammed so much from critics and even some supposed fans.

I'm currently keeping up with Ahsoka and the new American Horror Story. There are a few reality tv shows I'm looking forward to. I don't really care about the bachelor but seeing an old man do it seems interesting so I'm all in for the Golden one. I haven't watched Dancing with the Stars in ages but Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer is going to be on it this season so I'm watching mainly for her. There is some reality competition show called House of Villians with like "bad guys" from other reality shows mixed into one house to compete for money. I'm going to have some good trashy tv show fun coming up soon.

Danny McBride should join the long line of television comedy legends. He's really carrying that torch beautifully. I really liked Twisted Metal, hope S2 keeps momentum. Sometimes people get away from TV being entertainment. I don't want it to feel like homework. I've only seen the first 2 seasons of Buffy, I really need to finish eventually cause I liked what I watched (well more S2 than S1).

I'd love some R&B recommendations, also Buffy is well worth taking some time out and binging. I need to re-watch since I haven't seen it in awhile. I'm also going to start reading season 8 which is in graphic novel form.

Danny McBride knocks it out of the park all the time. I loved Eastbound and Down. The quote I had on MB in my signature was from that show. I also like his contributions to the Halloween franchise.

Or, maybe not. It's a long way and I'm tired. Plus the bus service there sucks. Maybe tomorrow.

So, the fuggin busses are always late round here, too? Should have guessed. Bloody modern society going to hell in a handbasket.
Sorry, gotta go, there's kids on me lawn...

Quote from: DJChameleon on Sep 28, 2023, 04:41 PMI'd love some R&B recommendations, also Buffy is well worth taking some time out and binging.

Stevie Wonders Innervisions, Marvin Gayes What's Going On, Al Greens Call Me & Minnie Ripertons Come to My Garden are always what I recommend to start!

I actually did go watch more of Buffy, I started from the beginning and am back on S3 now. Spike is probably my favorite character after Buffy, though. He needs more screen time.

Oh, there's too many I'm associated with to name.  But I'm likely in your collection somewhere.

If I had to pick favourites I'd be torn between Henry Cow, Red Krayola, and Pere Ubu, but my fandom is generally to interact with them as people which I have with all three bands.  I'm really big on archive.org, freebie bandcamps (usually metal or vaporwave) and probably the most surprising thing about me, I'm also a major EDM fiend.  When the rave era hit it was like finding a new colour in the spectrum, but the artists have blurred since and I have favourite tracks as opposed to favourite artists.  Not exclusively focused on albums -- radio shows, DJ sets, live tapes, all sorts of bootleg stuff, and singles.  Like my favourite bands, I want my approach to music consumption to be mine, and I work hard to achieve that.

But thank you for having me.

Lovely! You seem like you'll fit in very well with the many music lovers here. I like a lot of rave and dance electronic stuff as well. I'm a synthesizer player and audio nerd so I can talk about that stuff for hours.

And I'm totally with you on live/bootlegged stuff, you can find so many wonderful and rare recordings even just on Youtube, both audio and video. I've barely scratched the surface of Archive dot org but I know it's a treasure trove as well.

Looking forward to chatting with you some more!

That must have been very interesting to have lived that close in proximity to those people in particular.  I can't say much about what I've heard of what kinds of people they were, but they were definitely tapped into another plane entirely of consciousness.  Coil's music I've been obsessed with in particular, as well as Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle for a very long time now.  Coil is one of my primary influences on my own work.

I respect your anonymity and will not look further into who you might be, but I'm very interested in talking further with you about your views on art and life :) hope u stick around

Hi there. Someone mentioned this forum on another forum that was quite dead so I figured I'd check it out. I love a diverse range of music genres including jazz , classical, psychedelic and prog rock. I tend to enjoy instrumental music mostly. Ive been playing guitar for about 37 yrs and bass for about 10, though I put it down for awhile. I may pick it up again.
Current music favorites are pop bands Temples, jazz guitarist Julian Lage, Gustav Mahler's Symphonies, jazz pianist Michael Wollny (especially his use of dissonance on his album "Ghosts" ).

ppl focused on accuracy and conformity in writing styles bore me.  They are at best "grammar nazis" and academists, and at worst white supremacists or at least ppl that ignore the roots of why re-education is a thing anyways.

conformity in writing styles is boring bc it is not the way ppl talk, academia forces a certain writing style for the sake of legibility which I kinda understand to some extent but again it's not how ppl actually talk and I hate it.

talk how you can and do, that is the correct way

it's bullshit that AAVE has been attempted to be erased at all, it's honestly a much more fluid way of talking than the more "proper" british royalty speak English

Title: Re: Newcomers - introduce yourself here!
Post by: Dianne W on Feb 19, 2024, 05:56 AM
Thanks guys for the welcome and apart from my music pleasures my Huguenots interest has just lately taken on new heights. I had been searching for one in particular a Pierre Aumonier born around 1630 when confronted with 10 Volumes of hand written books...all in French and I had struggled to learn English let alone another Language so most of the added stories in these books I will never understand but one I got a rough translation for and I was gobsmacked actually. He was in fact Murdered but one Son Jonas escaped to England. I will share of course the vague story....those that are bored it's fine as just like my Husband he has no interest in History, just move on, pass by haha...

Family tales, told in the Aumonier family of Liverpool, tell the story of the old man Pierre Aumonier, resident of La Mothe, husband of Judith Bonnet. He was assaulted and killed by the King's dragoons during the dragonnades around 1685. His son Jonas escaped and fled to Canterbury, where he married Jeanne Fené on 10 February 1686 (between brackets 1687). His age was just 36.

finally a link to what was occurring at that time.

Well I got up far too early this morning so this post kept me occupied for a while anyways....

Quote from: Drjohnrock on Mar 15, 2024, 07:44 PMHello, I'm Drjohnrock.  I just joined this board.  I was, and still am, on MusicBanter, and am primarily interested in posting about music.  If anyone wants to know where I'm coming from musically, they can check out some of my posts on MB.  Or not.  Whatever.  It's a free country, and all that.

Do you like Dr. John?

The guy from New Orleans that's no longer with us?  Some of his stuff. But the name comes from when I used to do some DJ work on the radio.  A co-host of a show I was doing hung the "Dr. John" on me, and I would introduce myself at the beginning of shows as "Dr. John, The Rock And Roll Doctor."  My user name is a truncated form of that.

To be honest, there are probably many other threads in the music forums that would be better off if I stayed the h@ll away from them!

Hey everyone. Glad to find the place. I'm a MB from way back (early 2000's to around 2014). I went by Sparky/Matious. I recognize a couple names here. I couldn't take reddit anymore and had to find someplace else.  :guitar: Still got the old emojis and everything.

Hey Interloper 🙂 welcome to SCD! I'm happy you found us.

I'm Guybrush now, but used to be tore / toretorden on old MB. Always the Guybrush avatar, though.

Baltimore has some good clubs. I usually go to Ft. Meade for Medieval Times.

It's pretty nice the only thing is the food I understand it's Medieval but they give everyone the same meal. I think it was chicken, bread, and some type of vegetable  :coldsweat:
