Imperial Triumphant - Rotted Futures
Massacre - Surfing
Okapi - Ricalchino Solleone
Mark Nauseef, Ikue Mori, Evan Parker & Bill Laswell - Yuga Warp
Janko Nilovic, JJ Whitefield & Igor Zhukovsky - Really Hot
Time Of Orchids - Everyone Is Suspended
Mary Halvorson Quintet - Saturn Sings (No. 18)

I mostly make separate playlists for different genres and vibes, I don't have any big multi genre library that represents the breadth of what I listen to. So I just picked one of mine; this is what I got when I shuffled my "metalcore bangers" playlist.

Make Them Suffer - Soul Decay
It Dies Today - Severed Ties Yield Severed Heads
Motionless in White - 570
Iwrestledabearonce - Ulrich Firelord, Breaker of Mountains
Chimaira - Sp Lit
Born of Osiris - Now Arise
Alpha Wolf - Akudama
Bleeding Through - Love in Slow Motion
The Black Dahlia Murder - Funeral Thirst
Suicide Silence - Disengage

I don't do spotify. I went through my YT playlist and picked out recent stuff I hadn't posted here before.

MOWGLI - Cénac - Jazz 360 - 8 Juin 2019
George Russell – Vertical Form VI (1981 - Album)
KERBSIDE COLLECTION - GLAZE
Les Égarés "Orient Express" - Jazz in Marciac 2024
She's a Fast Persuader - Jamiroquai Live in Sydney 2010
Bob James - Live at Montreux - 1985
Puccio Roelens - Northern Lights - Rare Groove
A Certain Ratio - Flight
LTJ Bukem - KISS FM London - 13 December 1995

I like these kind of randomly-generated lists; so far we have 40 songs. How many are by artists whose name I recognize ? About 3 artists.  :( + :shycouch:

I was going to add a point for Bob James, but then realized that I was confusing him with someone else:-

Yeah this concept worked when we used to download music and had one giant playlist. In this day and age with streaming everything, we have so many different playlists. Some that are catered to specific genres or vibes.

So it's hard to pick one.

Hmmm I guess I found my most random playlist. I took the liked music one off of YT music.

Usher - Boyfriend
Aceyalone feat Riddlore - Find Out
Tevin Campbell & Rosie Gaines - I2I
Hanumankind & Kalmi - Big Dawgs
Dragons of Zynth - K.I.M.(Keep it moving)
Pentatonix - Jolene
Red Cafe feat Rick Ross & Ryan Leslie - Fly Together
Charli xcx - b2b
Fetty Wap - Undeniable
Charli xcx - 360

As much as I have listened to Charli this summer it makes sense she popped up twice on a random shuffle.

I use a music player on my PC which allows me to just load in folders and shuffle them as playlists. This is my entire collection on PC loaded and shuffled, in reverse order then to the most recent I played:

FYI, colour-coding to show whether I liked them or not (sometimes random stuff you downloaded plays, so don't judge me! Red means I hated it, Green I loved it, Black is meh or really not that impressed but didn't hate it etc)

"Vile Temptress" - Booze Control
"Dear Dream" - Gilbert O'Sullivan (shut up)
"Some Kind of Friend" - Barry Manilow (I SAID, shut UP!)
"Ziggy Stardust" - David Bowie
"Santa Fe" - Jon Bon Jovi
"No Ordinary Man" - Kasey Chambers
"Tears in My Eyes" - Uriah Heep
"Tulleries" - Voyager IV
"Refuse the Line" - Randy Edelman
"Blind Me" - For All We Know (No rating as I haven't finished listening to this yet)

My review here (https://scd.community/index.php?msg=33510)

So, do I have any street cred at all? Did I ever?

I still don't know how to participate because my music collection is physical and you can't randomize your entire streaming library on spotify like you could with last.fm

Please just give me some parameters

At least those two songs were coded red for "hate" so perhaps your street cred could recover if given some quick CPR, otherwise it'll be lost forever, I'm afraid ;)

I'm not aware of having access to a playlist, least of all one that I could shuffle. If the goal is to list stuff you're listening to, I'm putting down tracks I recently remember enjoying, which in its way achieves a kind of randomised shuffle:-

Chaos by The Church
Drunken Angel by Lucinda Williams
Tánc by Kolinda
Los Hongos de Marosa by Juana Molina
After Hours by Roy Buchanan
Kimberly by Patti smith
My Little Town by Paul Simon
Engine #9 by Wilson Pickett

Can't really remember beyond those recent listening highlights.

You could always use an RNG (Random Number Generator) if you want. Or an RLG (Random Letter Generator). Letters can be represented by numbers obviously, then you use the RNG to select which album by that artist and then which track. It's a bit messy but if your music is all physical (CDs I assume, or LPs?) that would be the only way I could see of randomising it.

I have like 50+ playlists currently, I'm just looking for any parameter to narrow it down. I don't want to choose the playlist for objectivity. And I want Lucem to pick for me. And to annoy dj.

Hatfield and the North - "(Big) John Wayne Socks Psychology on the Jaw" – The Rotter's Club
The Megaphonic Thrift - "Den evige heten" – Få meg til verden i tide
Chelsea Wolfe - "Eyes Like Nightshade" – She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She

My god, there are... bands I know in there! Shock! And possibly also, horror!
Here's my latest for you all to laugh at:

To Get Back to You - Nelson (Lightning Stikes Twice) Decent enough AOR
The Graves We've Dug - Harakiri for the Sky (Arson) Wonderful; love these guys and need to listen to more of their music
Crawling Chaos - Axemaster (chortle) (Crawling Chaos) Oh my sides! At least they have a cool cover for the album. That's about it. I mean, really? Axemaster? Why not call themselves Heavy Metal Gods or something and just go for it?   Also, the song was absolute shit.
Hijos del Odio - Tierra Santa (Medieval) The Spanish Iron Maiden. Love these guys. Sons of Odin, maybe? Surely not sons of odiousness?
First Light - The Amnis Initiative (Relaxation Music) Oh man was this boring! I must have downloaded this once for Karen at a time when she couldn't sleep. That's my excuse anyway.
Little Bird (Utah Saints Version) - Annie Lennox (Little Bird) Good enough but I prefer the other side - "Love Song for a Vampire" is a classic track.
London Kid - Jean-Michel Jarre (Images) I like a lot of JMJ's work. This I did not like. Very pedestrian and boring. "Play Oxygene! No, the whole album, s'il vous plais!"
Dream Baby Dream - Bruce Springsteen (High Hopes) Love Bruce but man was this boring. So very repetitive. We get it, Bruce: she should dream. What happened to the man who wrote songs like "Racing in the Street" and "Nothing Man"? Is this what he's been reduced to?
The London Boy - David Bowie (London Boys) Early Bowie number; shows the promise that was there, even if the old cockney accent is a bit strong there. Do wot? Shut it!
Hurricane - Y&T (Earthshaker) Brings me back to my younger days. No, the earth did not shake due to the passage of dinosaurs, thank you so very much!

And with that, I shall bid you adieu, until next time.

Sounds quite similar but I don't know. Here's his version while I check songwriting credits.
Yeah I checked and it is a cover. Kind of unusual for the Boss to include covers on his album (I know he covered Waits' "Jersey Girl", but not on any album) - he does a lot of covers live but that's surprising to see one on one of his studio albums. Well, I feel a bit better about it now. Still a shit song, but at least he didn't write it.

I'm trying to work out a way to participate in this thread. I created 150 playlists, each with a central theme, mostly chronological discographic surveys of a particular artist or composer's work. Resultantly, each playlist is several hundred albums long.

There are also genre playlists, such as The Progressive-Kraut-Psych-Avant garde Rock Collection (Vols I-VIII), which is a 753-album set.

I tried pulling my root audio folder into the play queue on my server but that taxed my RAM and froze the system.

The best I can do is to share a spreadsheet I put together titled, "Innerspace Labs Large Collections and Complete Discographic Archives" which highlights the largest collections in my library. That should provide an adequate summary of my listening tastes.

I haven't dipped into many people's playlist music, but I was curious about:-

After the trauma of hearing The Laughing Gnome, I didn't have much hope for this song, but it was ok, really: much more of a soft ballad than I expected, but also v unusual for Bowie as it seems to be so unambiguously autobiographical.

Yeah one of his early tracks, "Please Mister Grave Digger" is both disturbing and hilarious, especially as he keeps coughing to show how miserable and drab the cemetery is. I actually think it's an unrecognised classic personally.

I like that track a lot too, very unique. Little things like the rain sound effects and Bowie's little sniffly vocal inflections really add that sense of atmosphere and drama that is a bit uncomfortable and definitely compelling.

I can't remember but I think the idea behind it is that he's killed the guy being buried, and now he realises sadly that he has to kill the grave digger too. And with a runny nose! Should have taken some Night Nurse or Vicks!

^ Yep that's certainly a curious song. I liked the mention of Lambeth: that's the London borough of Bowie's hometown turf of Brixton, both of which I used to go through on buses quite often. As you and Lexi point out, "Mister G. D." has a lot of surprising little touches, and the whole concept of the song shows that right from the start Bowie was ready to experiment with unusual ideas. Will it turn me into a fan of early Bowie ? Probably not, I'm afraid, but at least I'll be less dismissive in the future.

Nice! Big Thief got me to pick up my guitar again, they kind of reminded me of everything I love about the singer/songwriter vibe. Lots of gems to be discovered in their catalog- enjoy!

My personal favorite is this b side (for lack of a better term):

Can I just ask, since I'm now reviewing these playlists, if you could put the album the track comes from please? Save me trawling through discographies. Thanks. And if you don't, I hate you.

Would be a big help, and much appreciated thanks.
And yes, I'm doing everyone's (even mine!) and that includes those who post more than one (like me!). Lisnaholic's is up next; I'll be listening and posting tomorrow. Quite enjoying this.

FYI, for those who can't be bothered trawling through the other thread, I've now linked each review to its original post here. So if you want to read the review of your own playlist (or any playlist) you just click on the link beside the original post and your head will fall off.

Well, probably not, but you never know. It will however (assuming you still have a head) take you to the review in the other thread.

I still use an iPod classic to play music when I'm driving. Haven't updated it in a while, but what the hell. Here's the first 10 I got when hitting shuffle, out of around 5,000 tracks.

The Birthday Party - "Yard" (Prayers On Fire - 1981)
Massive Attack - "One Love" (Blue Lines - 1991)
Henry Butler - "Tee Na Na" (Blues After Sunset - 1998)
Manic Street Preachers - "Empty Souls" (Lifeblood - 2004)
The Fall - "Slang King" (The Wonderful & Frightening World of The Fall - 1984)
Merle Haggard - "Hungry Eyes" (A Portrait Of Merle Haggard - 1969)
Gorgon City - "Real Life" (Escape - 2018)
The Sound - "New Dark Age" (From the Lions Mouth - 1981)
Miles Davis - "Agitation" (E.S.P. - 1965)
Raekwon - "Casablanca" (Immobilarity - 1999)

Okay! Took some time this morning to make and shuffle an electronic/vintage synth/new age playlist.

Kraftwerk – Radioland
(Radio-Activity, 1975)

Peter Baumann – Bicentennial Presentation
(Romance '76, 1976)

Vangelis – Spiral
(Spiral, 1977)

Yellow Magic Orchestra – Rydeen
(Solid State Survivor, 1979)

Depressive Silence – Forest of Eternity
(Demo II, 1996)

Delia Derbyshire – Ziwzih Ziwzih Oo-Oo-Oo
(BBC Radiophonic Music, 1967)

Enigma – Light of Your Smile
(Light of Your Smile, 1998)

Perrey & Kingsley – Baroque Hoedown
(The In Sound from Way Out, 1966)

Patrick O'Hearn – Forever the Optimist
(Between Two Worlds, 1987)

Tomita – Clair De Lune
(Snowflakes Are Dancing, 1974)

And just so TH doesn't have to spend time looking them all up, I've put these into their own playlist.

Nice, @Lexi Darling! Lots of classic synth artists on that shuffle. I have "Baroque Hoedown" on vinyl on my Moog shelf, and They Might Be Giants did a great cover of it a while back for the Moog film soundtrack. :)

Ahh nice! TMBG are always a delight. One cover they did that I always liked was this live Chumbawumba cover, haha.

Whoa, that's impressive! My ipod from 2004 lasted me until 2013 and then it straight up stopped functioning. But I loved that thing. How much storage does yours have?

My Ipod's battery is dead.

And it wouldn't have enough space for all my music.

I miss it though.

Edit: I got it in 2010 and kept it until 2016

This thing should have been obsolete years ago, but I always find a use for it. I usually plug it into the aux in my car when I'm driving, or connect it to my amplifier at home. It's an 80G iPod Classic. This thing has survived the great recession, and even survived a night left accidentally outside on the ground. The battery is still decent enough.

These are from my workout playlist which is mostly hit songs that are upbeat and/or have a good tempo. It has a good blend of genres, although it doesn't quite show in this selection.
