Title: 2024 Paris Olympics
Post by: DJChameleon on Jul 27, 2024, 04:57 AM
This thread is for all things/discussions related to the Olympics.

I'm kind of curious what's the forums opinion on them.

Are you even going to watch? Did you see the opening ceremony?

What sports are you looking forward to seeing?

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Kayak Cross and Breaking.

I'm also looking forward to the skate boarding competition, women's track and field and women's gymnastics.

I've not seen the opening ceremony yet but everyone I have spoke to has slagged it a bit. The 2012 London olympics opening ceremony can't be beaten though lol.

I will probably tune in for equestrian sports, running, swimming and maybe a few others but they're my favourites.

It will maybe be interesting to see skateboarding and surfing, I think they're relatively new to the Olympic Games.

I loved the opening ceremonies having the parade of athletes on boats in the river was a dope idea.

They had skateboarding at Toyko but yeah it's still relatively new.

The new ones this time is break dancing and kayak cross.

Surfing was also at the Tokyo games as well. So yeah on the newish side.

I really liked the Assassin's Creed looking character taking the torch through different areas and riding a mechanical horse over the river.

I'm not in the least bit interested in the Olympics - never have been, even when Ireland compete - but I'm glad to see someone started a thread, as I assumed there would be a lot of interest in them on the forum, and was surpised to see no thread. So well done, DJ.

(This post will be my entire contribution to this thread though. Have fun! Laters!)

I liked the opening ceremony for this one! Gojira and the last supper fashion runway thing were the standouts to me.

As far as the US coverage of the opening ceremony goes, what a dud. Peyton Manning couldn't stop talking about himself and Kelly Clarkson, on the rare occasion of her saying anything, was stunningly inarticulate.

Yeah I see that there has been a lot of pearl clutching about the drag queen last supper part from Christians and non Christians that just want to rant about woke culture being a menace.

Convicted rapist Van de Velde booed on Olympic debut (https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/articles/cpd9e0r2dxmo)

QuoteConvicted child rapist Steven van de Velde made his Olympic beach volleyball debut to a mixed reaction in Paris, with audible boos.

Van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 after admitting three counts of rape against a 12-year-old British girl.

What got me interested in the Olympics? Probably Great Britain's Daley Thompson winning gold in the Decathlon in the 80s (which spawned that finger crunching game on the ZX Spectrum). Mostly it was the athletics that had me on the edge of my seat. 100m, 200m and 400m are great, especially the relays cos anything can happen.

I haven't got into the Paris games yet, but I read that France won the gold in the rugby sevens and I'll watch the highlights asap.

Bring on the Games!

Simone Biles is stealing the olympics so far this year 👏. I love that for her.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Sha'Carri Richardson. I need to check when she will be racing.

Duncan Scott from Glasgow is doing extremely well, he is now the most decorated scottish Olympian. He passed Sir Chris Hoy's 7 medals today when he gained his 8th.

I can't think of anything else so far.

Sha Carri started today and if she advanced she's gonna run tomorrow as well. They also have a relay race on August 8th.

track and field over the weekend was so good.

Sha Carri got the silver medal and Noah Lyles won the gold medal by .005 of a second. It was a photo finish in the men's 100m.

I love Kayak Cross so much it was insane to watch.   New favorite Olympic sport. I also kind of hate that I think I missed out on the break dancing one. I'm going to have to search around and see if I can find clips anywhere.

I didn't want to blow up this thread with the faux outrage that people were having over female boxing but I'm so glad that Imane has made it to the Finals.

Woot I didn't miss Breaking it happens today and tomorrow.

Also good hustle by Team USA against Serbia for the Men's Basketball. They were down quite a bit in 3rd period then hustled to finish 95 to 91 and win.

Top 10 final medal count.

1. USA — 126 (40 gold, 44 silver, 42 bronze)
2. China — 91 (40 gold, 27 silver, 24 bronze)
3. Great Britain — 65 (14 gold, 22 silver, 29 bronze)
4. France — 64 (16 gold, 26 silver, 22 bronze)
5. Australia — 53 (18 gold, 19 silver, 16 bronze)
6. Japan — 45 (20 gold, 12 silver, 13 bronze)
7. Italy — 40 (12 gold, 13 silver, 15 bronze)
8. Netherlands — 34 (15 gold, 7 silver, 12 bronze)
9. Germany — 33 (12 gold, 13 silver, 8 bronze)
10. South Korea — 32 (13 gold, 9 silver, 10 bronze)

I liked the closing ceremonies. Of course old people were complaining about a single dancer twerking while Snoop performed.

So... uh... what was up with that Australian breakdancer?

I've seen many memes of her performance. I think the judges that allowed her to win the qualifying round to represent Australia was having a laugh because the person she was up against was really fucking good.

I just honestly don't understand what her deal was. Was she trying to be the Sasha Baron Cohen of the Olympics or something?

Supposedly she has a PHD in breakdancing whatever that means but she's a professor at a university 🙄.

It ends up coming off as someone who studied the art but never applied it in practice.

QuoteThe 2024 Olympics took a bow on Sunday during the traditional closing ceremony in Paris.

The Olympics officially opened in Paris on Friday, July 26, though some team events started on July 24. The last day of athletic competition was Aug. 11, which was the same day as the closing ceremony. The ceremony featuring a parade of flags and athletes started at 2 p.m. ET in the Stade de France and lasted for about three hours, which is roughly how long the closing ceremony in Tokyo went on for.

What time was the 2024 Olympic closing ceremony?
The closing ceremony began at 9 p.m. CEST, or 3 p.m. ET, on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Were there any other Olympic events on Aug. 11?
Several athletic competitions were scheduled for Sunday, ahead of the closing ceremony.

Women's marathon
Women's basketball
Cycling
Men's handball
Women's modern pentathlon
Women's volleyball
Men's water polo
Women's weightlifting
Wrestling
What happens at Olympic closing ceremonies?
There was a closing ceremony at the 1896 Summer Olympics, the first modern Olympic Games, but it "bore only the slightest resemblance to today's ceremonies," according to the Olympics.

There are several elements considered key components of the Olympic closing ceremony. First the head of state of the host country enters along with the International Olympic Committee president. Then the national anthem of the host country is played or sung as the host nation's flag is raised.

Other traditional elements include a parade of flags, a parade of athletes and the handover of the Olympic flag to a representative of the city hosting the Olympics in four years: in this case, Los Angeles.

Some final medals are also given out during the closing ceremony. At the end, the Olympic flame is extinguished.

The 2024 Olympics closing ceremony was called "Records." Thomas Jolly, who was artistic director of the at-times controversial opening ceremony, also directed the closing ceremony.

"At the Stade de France, where the greatest stars of athletics and rugby sevens will have competed, the moment will be solemn and emotional, but it will also be a time for celebration," Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said. "Finally, the pressure will be off, and everyone will be able to take full advantage of the absolutely exceptional show that is being planned under the direction of Thomas Jolly, with the help of all the teams working across the four Paris 2024 ceremonies. Innovative, surprising and brilliant, these ceremonies already promise to be very powerful, just like "Records", which has everything it takes to make a mark on the history of Closing Ceremonies."

Who performed at the Paris closing ceremony?
The closing ceremony featured performances from Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers and H.E.R.

Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance, jumping from the top of the stadium on a cable to as the "Mission Impossible" theme played. After taking the Olympic flag from Simone Biles, he drove out of the stadium on a motorcycle with the flag in tow.

The all-star lineup hit the stage as part of the handover to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Each of the music artists was a California native. H.E.R. sang the U.S. national anthem live from the Stade de France, while Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed in Los Angeles.

This link contains a wrap up if anyone is interested.
It's all text though, I'm sure if you look around the net you might be able to find video of the performances.

Part of the scoring is on originality, and she boasted that all her moves are original. Lol.

And to be clear she doesn't have a PhD in breakdancing lol.... she earned a doctorate and wrote her thesis on gender intersectional in the Australian breaking scene.
