nah good guess tbf but she had no powers of flight (afaik  ;) ) and I didn't even know there was a band named after her. The band I'm referring to is very famous. Another hint: a follower implies its opposite, and a dynamic between those two. It's probably more useful to think of those words. And approach it more as a riddle than as a vague description

Title: Re: Cryptic Band Names
Post by: Lexi Darling on Apr 01, 2024, 12:28 AM
Nope.

Alright, I think enough guesses have been made. Thanks to all of you who made them.

The answer I had in mind was Linkin Park. My hint "think outside the spelling bee" was a reference to the president's name "Lincoln" being misspelled in their name, and "nature" was meant to refer to an outdoor park. "The nature of a president" = the park of Lincoln.

Maybe that was a little too nebulous? Anyway, thanks again, looking forward to the next challenge!

Title: Re: Cryptic Band Names
Post by: GD on Apr 03, 2024, 02:36 AM
Guess I'll leave one final hint, and then if nobody has gotten it by tomorrow I'll give away the answer so somebody else can have a go again:

The name of the band consists of two words, with altogether three syllables. No "the" or any similar articles anywhere. The riddle has nothing to do with the semantic meaning of the band's name; think of it instead more in the direction of a rebus puzzle.

I mean you all know which thing about drake I mean I suppose, and the band name I'm thinking of relates to that quite specifically when you read it a certain way (if the interpretation was wide then the riddle wouldn't be fun). If you also disregard obscure bands we can't be expected to know, then there is really only one good fit as far as I can see. The most famous Kendrick Lamar lyrics relating to the whole thing should give you the right direction

No problem Saulaac. Think I'll break a few rules of my own. Just thought up these two, so with apologies to Lexi (no idea what yours is) I'll just drop them here. Answer whenever you want, either when Lexi's is revealed/deciphered or, you know, whenever. I'll differentiate them by throwing in a TH on them. I guess anyone else who wants to do that can. Hey, what do I care?

TH 1: A very patient male cat (who may also have his own special room)

TH 2: Floating in the sea with Scrooge's dead partner and a fleet of Japanese hunting vessels.

Toodles!

@Lisnaholic Just wanted to say your clue was highly clever. I would never have got it. well done. :thumb:

It's not Goatpenis, believe it or not.

Here's another hint: the artist's name does not include the word "goat" specifically, but it is goat related.

I really appreciate that kind comment.

And thanks for your clues, Lexi ! Thanks to them , I'm now ready to guess that "The one on the farm who is most admired" is Billy Idol

I don't often think about Billy Idol, but thanks to this game, the next time I do, it will be as Billy-goat Idol, which perhaps should've been his stage name all along.
I'll try to think of another cryptic name, but in the meantime, we have Trollheart's to mull over:

Quote from: Trollheart on Jun 25, 2024, 12:16 AMTH 1: A very patient male cat (who may also have his own special room)

TH 2: Floating in the sea with Scrooge's dead partner and a fleet of Japanese hunting vessels.

So these ones jumped out at me like a sore thumb (I think I mixed up a couple of idioms there).

TH 1: A very patient male cat (who may also have his own special room)
Tom Waits

TH 2: Floating in the sea with Scrooge's dead partner and a fleet of Japanese hunting vessels.
Bob Marley and the Wailers  (The "whaling vessels" was a bit of an easy one, TH  :D)

Coming up with cryptic clues is hard, so feel free anyone to chip with the next round.

With Euro 2024 heating up, that's gotta be The Lightning Seeds.

TH5: How do you know they're asleep?

Am going with Electric Light Snore-chestra.

Well done on TH2. Not so much on TH5.

Here's a clue: if you look at someone asleep, how can you tell they actually are asleep? I mean sure, their eyes are closed but they might just be resting them. What is it that confirms a person is actually asleep, or perhaps you might even say... dreaming?

Hell, that's all the clues I'm gonna give. Oh, and you all know the band: they were huge.

Gonna throw in a few more.

TH6: A drab uniform for going to mass

TH7: A royal personage changes the entire governmental structure

TH8: An exclamation of surprise or understanding

TH9: Definitely not good for your teeth, even if it's not covered in chocolate

(that's one for us oldies)

TH10: If Eddie is working for the farmer, and likes sheep, what is he doing?

Yes to all those, and well done Saulaac for getting REM (Rapid Eye Movement, which occurs when you dream, see?)

Just leaves two...

Let's hook this up to a generator and plug it into a dangerously-overloaded plugoard and see if... ah!

It's.. oh. Well, up the power then. No no, just do it... What do you mean, playing God. I am.... ah, just kiddin' big guy.
:shycouch:

Right, we have two left. If nobody gets these or tumbleweed continues to blow through the thread tomorrow I'll reveal them all (contain your enthusiasm, as I believe a popular form of comedic entertainment on the televisual picture box would have it) and I'll add in these.

TH1: Close by a vehicle usually involved in transporting goods, and the first letter of the alphabet

TH2: An unwinnable conflict: people always want their fix

TH3: Glenn and Don are rather surprised to find themselves at a Cryptopsy gig

TH4: A grown woman who talks like a baby (No it is not one of my fantasies, you take that back!)

TH5: Yourself as well?

TH6: A drab uniform for going to mass

TH7: Okay, so they may eat people, but they'll grow out of it: they're grand people

TH8: Metal gods sailing in a Portuguese battleship (or stepping on a particular type of jellyfish)

TH9: Definitely not good for your teeth, even if it's not covered in chocolate

(that's one for us oldies)

TH10: Rather a lot of madmen, I'd say

Very inventive clues, TH,  but I'm not good at this sort of game. That's why I'm proud to have picked off a couple of your easier ones:-

QuoteTH5: Yourself as well?
TH7: Okay, so they may eat people, but they'll grow out of it: they're grand people

TH5 = U2
TH7 = Fine Young Cannibals

Near...van...a  ->  Nirvana    Quite chuffed to have got that one  8)

TH4: A grown woman who talks like a baby (No it is not one of my fantasies, you take that back!)
Lady Gaga

TH8: Metal gods sailing in a Portuguese battleship (or stepping on a particular type of jellyfish)
Manowar

Well done! You're good at this.

As nobody got them (not even Saulaac) here are the answers for the first two original ones left:

TH6: A drab uniform for going to mass = Black Sabbath (surprised nobody got that one!)

TH9: Definitely not good for your teeth, even if it's not covered in chocolate

(that's one for us oldies) = Sweet (or The Sweet)

I'll think up some more. What do you mean, no please don't bother. It's no bother, no bother at all...

Okay let's fill in some gaps (I'm moving TH10 up to 4, as if you care)...

TH1: A foetid, stinking crib, certainly no place to put an infant!
TH2: An unwinnable conflict: people always want their fix
TH3: Glenn and Don are rather surprised to find themselves at a Cryptopsy gig
TH4: Rather a lot of madmen, I'd say
TH5: Livestock without heads
TH6: Use a German drinking tankard to batter down a castle gate?
TH7: Very famous, and not small at all
TH8: A deadly dance by the Berlin Wall
TH9: Don't be greedy: spread the wealth!
TH10:The King has forgotten to pay his electricity bill
