David Coverdale's penis
Quote from: Janszoon on Mar 27, 2024, 08:20 PMDavid Coverdale's penis
Why would anyone want to talk about David Coverdale's pens? Are they special glow-in-the-dark ones or... ohhhhh!
I was toying with pale serpent but I'm gonna go with Whitesnake.
Look man, what you do in the privacy of your own room is up to you... Must admit, never heard it called that before though! ;D ;D

The Byrds", Lexi ?
Quote from: Lisnaholic on Mar 28, 2024, 10:35 PM^ Maybe "The Byrds", Lexi ?
Ah, of course! I was thinking The Beatles, but The Byrds absolutely works too. I included "winged" to try to throw people off since beetles' wings are not normally visible, I guess I failed to think that my description could apply to other bands, haha.

Flammable flying follower

Joan of Arc?
nah good guess tbf but she had no powers of flight (afaik ;) ) and I didn't even know there was a band named after her. The band I'm referring to is very famous. Another hint: a follower implies its opposite, and a dynamic between those two. It's probably more useful to think of those words. And approach it more as a riddle than as a vague description

Hall and Oates?
Alright! Here is one for you all. Tried to be a little more cryptic with this one.
The nature of a president.
Quote from: Lexi Darling on Mar 31, 2024, 07:58 PMAlright! Here is one for you all. Tried to be a little more cryptic with this one.
The nature of a president.
Mojo Nixon
Quote from: Janszoon on Mar 31, 2024, 08:02 PMMojo Nixon
Nope, not the one I was thinking of. Nor would I describe Tricky Dick as having much in the way of natural mojo.
Another hint: It's a very successful and popular band.
If you had said government is have guessed insane clown posse but president is too singular for that I suppose
It's not Insane Clown Posse.
Here's another hint: Think outside the spelling bee.
King krule? That's some kind of rapper right?
Bush
Animals as Leaders
It's none of those three.
Third hint: "Nature" here does not refer to any animal.
If nobody guesses correctly in 8 hours, I can reveal it if people want to move on.
Dead Kennedys? maybe not but can't think of anything else
It's not the DK.
I can reveal it now if that's preferable to waiting.
Just one last gasp attempt, Lexi. Green Day.
Nope.
Alright, I think enough guesses have been made. Thanks to all of you who made them.
The answer I had in mind was Linkin Park. My hint "think outside the spelling bee" was a reference to the president's name "Lincoln" being misspelled in their name, and "nature" was meant to refer to an outdoor park. "The nature of a president" = the park of Lincoln.
Maybe that was a little too nebulous? Anyway, thanks again, looking forward to the next challenge!

That is second level crypticism. My Dad used to do the Times cryptic crosswords which would always require this double reverse back-engineering of the clues. Linkin Park makes sense now!
How about this one?:
"A religious figurehead will engage in romantic pursuit"
how confident can I be that I know this band?
Quote from: Marie Monday on Apr 02, 2024, 07:12 PMhow confident can I be that I know this band?
Fairly? I know for a fact that several people on here know them and their music well. I guess that might give a slight hint
Quote from: GD on Apr 01, 2024, 01:29 AMHow about this one?:

God Is My Copilot?
Quote from: Lexi Darling on Apr 02, 2024, 09:42 PMGod Is My Copilot?
I didn't even know of that band! But good guess I suppose? I will say that guessing mine will require even more association and less literal-mindedness then your last riddle did so I might have made it a tad too difficult, even though I'm confident many (or even most?) of you know the band
Less literal? That rules out my Frankie Goes To Hollywood effort.
Well obviously the religious figurehead is Lemmy from Motorhead, but after that I'm stumped...
Guess I'll leave one final hint, and then if nobody has gotten it by tomorrow I'll give away the answer so somebody else can have a go again:
The name of the band consists of two words, with altogether three syllables. No "the" or any similar articles anywhere. The riddle has nothing to do with the semantic meaning of the band's name; think of it instead more in the direction of a rebus puzzle.
Ah, popol vuh
The rebus approach hint was what did it because I was barking up the wrong tree, nice one
Quote from: Marie Monday on Apr 03, 2024, 01:42 PMAh, popol vuh

 you got it!
(In case anyone is still wondering the phrase suggested by the riddle was "Pope'll woo" ;) )
Wow, I would have never guessed that. Probably because I never new "Vuh" was pronounced like that even though I love that band.
God I was close with Frankie and Holly"woo"d.
Ok new one, easier than my last one I think:

Quote from: Marie Monday on Apr 03, 2024, 03:05 PMOk new one, easier than my last one I think:

Fishbone?
No, because arguably not food
Bump because this was fun and I swear my last riddle is very guessable
I think you have to accept that though it may be, as you say, guessable, nobody here can guess it. So maybe give us the answer and we move on?
I've been wracking my brain on this for a couple hours and I can't think of any band that fits that's well known enough. Closest I found was a house group called Dirty Sole, but I can't imagine that's correct.
Hootie and the Blowfish?
(because they contain toxins that can kill you if prepared incorrectly?)
A last effort, and I don't know a lot about them, apart from ISB's and Lisna's posts. Penguin Café.
Quote from: Trollheart on Jun 16, 2024, 06:52 PMI think you have to accept that though it may be, as you say, guessable, nobody here can guess it. So maybe give us the answer and we move on?
no need to accept anything. None of the guesses above are correct but I'll give a hint: the inedible seafood in question is expensive and spreadable. The band is very famous, but I do not like their music
I'm also scrabbling round and lost, only coming up with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, (in the vain hope that somewhere in those letters, there's an anagram of caviar)
Whoa no it's a regular riddle, no anagrams. Also it's not about caviar
Ok another hint which practically gives it away: the band is lumped into the grunge genre
Pearl jam?
*applause and confetti*
Was not able to organically think of that but yeah it would be both expensive and spreadable so makes sense I guess
Does this make it my turn to think of a riddle or can it be anyone? In the latter case then go for it

It's a neat riddle actually.
Here's a slightly unserious one:

The Velvet Underground?
Unlikely but:

Quote from: Marie Monday on Jun 21, 2024, 12:12 PMDo people want a hint or has everyone abandoned the game?
I haven't guessed because I feel like it could be a pretty wide range of potential things. A hint would be much appreciated!
I mean you all know which thing about drake I mean I suppose, and the band name I'm thinking of relates to that quite specifically when you read it a certain way (if the interpretation was wide then the riddle wouldn't be fun). If you also disregard obscure bands we can't be expected to know, then there is really only one good fit as far as I can see. The most famous Kendrick Lamar lyrics relating to the whole thing should give you the right direction

No problem Saulaac. Think I'll break a few rules of my own. Just thought up these two, so with apologies to Lexi (no idea what yours is) I'll just drop them here. Answer whenever you want, either when Lexi's is revealed/deciphered or, you know, whenever. I'll differentiate them by throwing in a TH on them. I guess anyone else who wants to do that can. I'll try to think of another cryptic name, but in the meantime, we have Trollheart's to mull over:

Tom Waits
TH 2: Floating in the sea with Scrooge's dead partner and a fleet of Japanese hunting vessels.

Very inventive clues, TH, but I'm not good at this sort of game. That's why I'm proud to have picked off a couple of your easier ones:-

Well done! You're good at this.
As nobody got them (not even Saulaac) here are the answers for the first two original ones left:
TH6: A drab uniform for going to mass = Black Sabbath (surprised nobody got that one!)
TH9: Definitely not good for your teeth, even if it's not covered in chocolate

I'll think up some more. What do you mean, no please don't bother. It's no bother, no bother at all...
Okay let's fill in some gaps (I'm moving TH10 up to 4, as if you care)...
TH1: A foetid, stinking crib, certainly no place to put an infant!
TH2: An unwinnable conflict: people always want their fix
TH3: Glenn and Don are rather surprised to find themselves at a Cryptopsy gig
TH4: Rather a lot of madmen, I'd say
TH5: Livestock without heads
TH6: Use a German drinking tankard to batter down a castle gate?
