@ Psy-Fi and Janszoon: yeah, sadly that news about Brian Wilson is almost not news, because afaik he has been visibly struggling with a mental fog of some kind for years. What's particularly touching to me is to see the way he is always treated with such respect by fellow musicians, in appreciation of his genious years and his struggles with drugs and fame.

I guess it's not too surprising considering his mental health struggles over the years but there were times when the fog lifted for a while and his musical genius shone through. I went to see him perform live back in 2000, when he did the first 'Pet Sounds' tour and it was one of the most spellbinding and memorable shows I've ever seen. One of those rare occurrences when the performance sounds so good that it takes the live music experience to another level.
That's high praise for a concert, Psy-Fi. If he was doing songs from his Pet Sounds era, then I can imagine that it was something special to hear. Were the songs with full Beach Boy type harmonies or was it more of a stripped-down, BW at piano performance?
(From what Janszoon says, he may well have seen BW on the same tour!)

He had a backing band and an orchestra. He played various Beach Boys songs with just the backing band and had the orchestra join them when they played the Pet Sounds album from start to finish. Here's the set list...
Brian Wilson - July 18, 2000 (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/brian-wilson/2000/fleet-pavilion-boston-ma-1bdb9dfc.html)Janszoon saw him more recently.
Thanks for that info on the concert! some of those Pet Sounds tracks were the very best songs that BW wrote - and I see from your setlist that he kept a string of early Beach Boy classics for his encore. That was a great way to end the concert, I'm sure.
It's actually funny, I've never been a big fan of them, but my dad and I recently hung out and listened to some Beach Boys playlist he had which included a bunch of tracks from Pet Sounds, and I think for the first time I finally "got it".
I think maybe the wave of 00s/10s indie bands that worshipped them kinda soured me on that sound and I couldn't really give it a fair shake. I think I can appreciate it a lot more now as a chiller 30 something.

Yeah, Same here. I "got" a lot of groups like The Beatles and The Stones from the first time I heard them but it took me until my 30's to really "get it" with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Before that, I just dismissed them as an uncool, corny & sappy 60's pop group.

I liked the Beach Boys out of nostalgia because my dad used to play their early stuff in the car a lot, but it wasn't until my late 20s when I started to appreciate how brilliant their later stuff was.

For albums I'd say Definitely Maybe is probably my favorite front to back; What's the Story Morning Glory has higher highs but also lower lows. Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is also really underrated IMO.
Favorite song is way tougher. I might just have to hand it to Champagne Supernova for nostalgia's sake, that was the first song of theirs I fell in love with. I'd also shout out Don't Look Back in Anger, Shakermaker, She's Electric, and Who Feels Love to round out a top five.
How about you?

Honestly, I think Morning Glory is probably my favorite album of theirs. For me, it really has no low points (besides maybe the excerpts of The Swamp Song, which are so brief that they can be forgiven, since they're mostly pointless interludes). I think in retrospect, despite how much I also love Definitely Maybe, I think it has more forgettable tracks. It's funny you mention Shakermaker, as I've never, ever gelled with that track. It's usually a skip from me. Digsy's Dinner is rather banal too.
As for favorite song, as you noted, it's difficult. I might actually choose "Don't Go Away" as my favorite track, with "Champagne Supernova" a very close second. Other honorable mentions would be "Whatever", "Live Forever", "Gas Panic" and "Stay Young".
Something I'd forgotten but just remembered was that contemporarily, Be Here Now got absolutely glowing reviews from critics while Morning Glory got middling/lukewarm reviews. Pretty funny, that.

I really love the guitar work on Shakermaker, it's like a slow burning grunge blues track and I dig that vibe. But I understand why it wouldn't be a standout to others. I'd also include Live Forever in a top 10 for sure.
Really Oasis's lead guitar work is such a standout element of the band for me, it's not flashy but it's super distinctive and pleasing to my ears.
As for Morning Glory, I'm not big on Wonderwall (though the memes running it into the ground might be to blame for that one), Cast No Shadow, or the title track (and the Swamp Songs as well) but the rest is top notch in my book. I like Definitely Maybe more as a front to back listen and I admire that it has a bit more of a scrappy gritty vibe. Both are stone cold classics in my book though.

I think both Noel and Liam had a great ear for melodies and hooks. The guitar tone is wonderful too of course.
Not a fan of Cast No Shadow!? That's one of my favorites on the entire album. If Wonderwall hadn't been so overplayed, I think we'd all like it more. The sound of Definitely Maybe is definitely more raw and it has less sheen to it than their future records, so I get where you're coming from with that.
Are you much of a fan of Be Here Now? I think it'd be a much better record if it wasn't so bloated and every song wasn't like 8 minutes long lol

I dunno! Just never really stood out to me I guess.
My opinion on Be Here Now is pretty much the same as yours, solid musical ideas and melodies but those songs don't have enough to them to warrant all of them being so long.

And am I crazy, or were Oasis the last popular band that had great b-sides?? Are b-sides still a thing in the digital age or is that just what we call the songs the producers and label thought sucked too much to be on the album proper?
One thing about oasis that confuses me (except for their succes) is the comparison to the Beatles. It seems to be the same as when people compare the strokes to the Velvet Underground: I can see some superficial similarities, but their actual music is quite different
Quote from: Marie Monday on Aug 15, 2024, 11:42 AMOne thing about oasis that confuses me (except for their succes) is the comparison to the Beatles. It's true, it's mostly superficial, but there are some obvious similarities. The intro to "Dont Look Back In Anger" basically ripping of "Imagine":
Oasis's use of mellotron on tracks like "Champagne Supernova" bringing to mind the Beatles use of mellotron on "Strawberry Fields Forever". The string sections in certain songs like "All Around the World" being Beatles-esque.
I think more of the comparisons come about due to Noel and Liam's fervent worship of the Beatles, the many Beatles references you can find in their tracks, and Liam's frequent appropriation of their appearance/dress:
Noel and Liam would blather on about how great the Beatles were any chance you gave them - their biggest fantasy was probably to be the Beatles. So it become somewhat of a repeated and trite media comparison without a whole lot of substance to back it up.
I see more similarities between The Fall and Pavement, but even that comparison doesn't really pass muster to me.
Only Slanted and Enchanted sounds a lot like the fall to me. Once Malkmus realised he was better at writing nice melodies than sounding like Marky Smith the similarity was pretty much gone. Not that Slanted and Enchanted is a bad album though

There is quite a lot tbf as well as the Stone Roses (like a hybrid of them)
Let There be Love is an obvious one. There was another on the 90s radio the other week where I thought fucking hell it's not even subtle. Don't ask which song because I can't remember and I don't go out of my way to listen to them.
And now I'm talking about them again 😡
Bye.
Yeah they're obviously aping them, they just never actually sound like them as far as I've heard, mostly because they can't write a great melody to save their lives

Not sure if I've mentioned this, but I have a brother and him and I have a pretty similar relationship to Noel and Liam at least in terms of our antagonism towards each other. I'm the older brother, but I'm more of the "Liam" while he's the "Noel" in the relationship. I'm the loudmouth, the one who always starts shit with him, and the one who likes to party while he's the more stoic, probably more talented, more serious and professional one, who doesn't party at all, never smoked and never drank.
Anyways, we both grew up loving Oasis, and that relatable dynamic is probably part of the reason why - and we're already making plans to go see them assuming the leaks of them coming to America are true. It will be a very special sibling moment indeed - and yes, he'll be the designated driver for the event.
That's a nice post, SGR. My older brother had control of the tape machine and would put on mix tapes with Howard Jones and Nick Kershaw.
If Jamiroquai goes to Norway then I can imagine Guybrush doing taxi service whilst his brother is going for it big time.

Wow, I'm impressed with your memory 😄 Yes, he is a huge Jamiroquai fan and I would definitely be designated driver if we had that sort of chemistry and dynamic.
Sadly, we were never very close and so we're rather polite with eachother... Not at eachother's necks like Liam and Noel.
The tickets went on sale today. Loads on Twitter saying they finally got in the queue and able to buy, then their ticket shot up in price from £150 to over £300, on the basis that it is 'in demand'. That's disgraceful. Apparently Oasis would have approved of this as well.

Here's a news item about Sheryl Crow:-
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/17/entertainment/sheryl-crow-sells-tesla-and-donates-money-to-npr/index.html
"Sheryl Crow sells her Tesla and donates money to NPR"
Why to NPR ? Because of this sinister demand:-
QuoteThe House of Representatives panel working with DOGE recently sent a letter to the heads of both NPR and PBS demanding that they appear to testify on Capitol Hill regarding taking government funding to share what the panel referred to as "systemically biased content."
As Musk's DOGE lurches ever furthur in a direction of Orwellian control, I think it's time to watch for the language shifts that Orwell warned against. Remember his "Freedom is Slavery" slogans? Or the Ministry of Truth, in charge of propaganda? In my opinion, The House of Representatives is going after the hapless NPR, not for the stated reason of "systemically biased content" but precisely because NPR is NOT systemically biased, in the desired Trumpian direction. I think any attempt an impartiality or independence of viewpoint is seen as a threat by the President's team, and that NPR will suffer under the new oligarchy, just as the AP has recently suffered for not going along with Trump's diktat about the Gulf of America.
