What are the fashionistas of this website wearing right now? What styles are you into, your blue suede shoes or your raspberry berets? Are you one of those people who just wears what is fresh and clean at the time or are you a dedicated follower of fashion?
Describe your style if you wish.
A pair of sweats. It's late
Oooh! This is the thread for me!
I've been slowly bitten by the vintage fashion bug over the past few years. I dressed punk in high school, and slowly morphed into a very soft feminine style over the next 15 or so years.
I exclusively wear dresses and skirts, and I think the next evolution is to go hard into the 1950s vintage aesthetics. I've loved feminine fashion of that era (late 40s through early 60s) for around 20 years but I never believed in myself enough to think I could pull it off. I'm not great at getting a good hair look for that style, but it'll be a fun challenge.
A few of my fashion mainstays include floral dresses, more professional looking button up dresses, lots of heels, maxi skirts, sleeveless ruffled tops, and so on.
The modern fashion world is too much for me to follow honestly. I just do what I like and think looks good on me.
That last bit is what I do, Miss Synth (if I can call you that). I just dress in what I feel comfortable in. People probably look at me and think I dress like a yob but I don't care.
Vast majority of what I wear is sports clothing. Most of it is black, and I wear some band t shirts.
I hate jeans!
Casual clothes.
I wanna look smart for work, so generally go for shirts. tucked into jeans and a nice jacket. The real me is much more your average slob. If the weather is warm, I prefer shorts and sandals. Perhaps a singlet with a less "professional" shirt over.
I've dressed that way for years, so it has nothing to do with fashion 😅 One reason why I like sandals in the summer is we're often close to water and I like to be able to walk into a river or catch a crab without worrying too much about my footwear.
Most annoying trend right now in the UK, the 'meet me at McDonald's' haircut.
This haircut, Nike tech fleece tracksuit, Jordans and a man pouch. Spotted on young males (early 20s and down) all over UK city centres.

Why is is called meet me at McDonald's?
I was wondering the same thing. Man, it looks stupid.
I have no idea.
If there's one thing I hate it's everything.
But no: people (women, almost exclusively, mostly young) going out in pyjamas. I mean, how can that look good? They literally look like they just tumbled out of bed, and they probably did. It's the look that says "I could not be bothered to get dressed, but I have to go out so fuck you". Idiotic.

R.I.P. Mary Quant, who died the other day, April 13, 2023:

She became a household name in 60s Britain - singlehandedly changing fashion with her unprecedented mini-skirt designs:-
Pre-Mary Quant: (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQiKTTS6lvG0r5HnuEKxmv81JpvzznKu1AtbF4lmb1iBUtappAi3aHVF-KcIwfk6fU2XEM&usqp=CAU). A Mary Quant design: (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSqm37WKSl3pKRfsxUCQrJ6GVhqGp6w4SBLyw&usqp=CAU)
Some people were outraged by the startling new design ideas, but, being an adolescent boy at the time, I wasn´t entirely hostile to the style she invented. And now, unexpectedly, I owe a new kind of "thanks" to Mary Quant: she has died at age 93, reminding me that I could have plenty of years of life left.

I'll take a guess that McDonald's is a popular meeting place for daft teen males in the UK.
From what I gathered from my quick search, 'Prime' looks like a ridiculously overpriced caffeinated "energy" drink.

Selling for crazy money on eBay, like 50 quid a bottle. It's some shit drink that two YouTube celebrities put their name to.
There is a guy who has become a celebrity selling cans of it for 100 quid from his shop. Called Wakey Wines.
Plenty of videos of long queues at 6am and other stupid times of kids and families waiting in line to buy a bottle of this drink then storming the shops and fighting over it.
Videos of kids at Christmas getting Prime as a present and crying tears of joy.
Fucking bizarre. It's one thing to queue for the new iPhone or a console when they're released but a £2 drink?
That is both sad and bewildering, jimmy jazz. Can people really be so obssessed with something that goes down the gullet in a couple of mins ?

Staggering isn't it. It's no different to a bottle of Coca Cola or Lucozade but because some YouTube guys put their name on it they're treating it like liquid gold.
You know these YouTube guys sell out arenas having boxing fights against each other? Boxing fans aren't interested in it, it's today's kids. Youtubers are the new celebrities.

I was thinking of the Coca-Cola comparison, as well.
Fools and their money.
I wonder how many of the people buying that crap are buying it to resell, thinking they are going to make a small fortune?
Yeah well I have to say it, don't I? A Prime example of human stupidity, gullibility and sheep mentality at its worst.
I mentioned in the hobbies thread I started that my entire wardrobe comprises vintage articles from the Victorian era to 70s disco. Lots of shag faux fur, fringed garments, vintage blazers and vests, suede outerwear, ultrasuede suits, polyester disco shirts, giant bell-bottom trousers, and a metric f*ckton of velvet.
I adore accessories so I have over a dozen 12ft long shag and crocheted wool scarves, an array of haberdashery including vintage wide-brim fedoras, flatcaps, and antique beaver fur top hats, and custom-made jewelry I've fashioned from old typewriter and amplifier parts, as well as typewriter cufflinks and skeleton magnifier pocketwatches. I have vintage wingtips and Chelsea boots for every outfit and I have spectacles and walking sticks to match all of my ensembles.
Working from home since COVID, I haven't had as many opportunities to get snazzy, but I dress in my finest every weekend even if only to fetch the post or grab a coffee at the local cafe.
From page 201 of cultural critic Simon Reynolds' book Retromania he states:
Remember the Pop Boutique store in central London with its slogan 'Don't follow fashion. Buy something that's already out of date'? Just as vintage can have an undercurrent of recalcitrance towards fashion, similarly it is possible for rock nostalgia to contain dissident potential. If Time has become annexed by capitalism's cynical cycles of product shifting, one way to resist that is to reject temporality altogether. The revivalist does this by fixating on one era and saying: 'Here I make my stand.' By fixing identity to the absolute and abiding supremacy of one sound and one style, the revivalist says, ' This is me.'
That's my stance on fashion.

Why is it that NBA 'jerseys' always come with player names on the back?
I'd like a couple for showing my gainz off in summer but I don't want some guy's name all over my top.
Everywhere I've looked there literally is no option for them.
Why is this?

I've seen "customizable" jersey listings that give you the option of adding your own name and a number of your choosing. Not sure if you could order one without a name and/or number, though.

I like the rugged look with the little screw-heads showing, plus the detail of the winder that looks like a nut.
Unfortunately though, it breaks all the rules I have about what I'd put on my wrist. I've worn a watch all my life since secondary school, all of them chosen to be simple, unobtrusive and easy to read. Sub-rules are that they never have an expandable metal strap and always have a traditional clock face, with the complete sequence of numbers from 1 to 12, so they have all been variations on this type of watch:-
(https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWc3Vg9g4D9VOPGsbBk4CoPCzHjYJyRuzKdg&s)
Surprisingly, in the watch shops here, this type of basic model is getting harder to find.
Looking again at the photos posted so far,I have two questions:-
i) if your watch face has dashes, not numerals, don't you find yourself counting back on the face just to check: is that the 4 dash or the 5 dash ?
ii) is there a law that says every catalogue photo of a watch must be taken at 10 past 10 ?
You start associating the angles of the dashes with the hours in an immediate way

Why is it so fucking hard to buy nice masculine shoes in small size I swear 😭😭😭 (and this applies to clothes in general, men's clothes are often better quality too, especially jeans, and finding things that fit me is a nightmare). I just want a good pair of Chelsea boots that fits me and doesn't look all prissy fml

It's a ballache for men too BTW.
Well not the shoe thing. It is quite easy for me to find shoes but the rest is true.
Jeans need to be tapered quite a bit for me and none of them ever are. Too tight on the thighs and then wide as fuck on the calves.
BTW ASOS have mens Doc Martens going down to size 3 so you could try those.

Important Life Event Announcement (in my little world)
I've just replaced my torn and tattered topper with a new wool top hat. This is the fifth I've owned in my lifetime, and is a core element of my identity, celebrating my love of antiquity, anachronism, and eclecticism.
It all began with a velvet topper handed to my best friend from my teens by a stranger on a beach who then bequeathed it to me before his untimely passing. I wore it every day for years. It was mangled when I was assaulted by a drunken man at Donovan's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony.
I later secured a silk collapsible topper and then an 1800's beaver fur antique which had tears and crumples, as well as a stain from where I attempted to glue a large split seam. My middle school best friends remarked that I really should replace it, which inspired this latest acquisition.
The challenge with hats from the 19th century is that people were smaller then, so it's difficult to find one that fits. I had my hat size measured at a haberdashery on Niagara on the Lake. I contacted Gary White, the one living master hatter in the United States, (as Dave Brown, Hatter to the Stars retired 13 years ago), and explained my plight. He said the only hatter who produces custom beaver fur toppers today is Lock & Sons in England, and their hats cost between $1,000-$6,000 for standard, non-custom orders.
I briefly attempted a hat from China but the quality was pitiful. So I compromised with this handsome new handcrafted wool topper with a removable feather in my size from a hatter in England. I seldom ever purchase anything new so it's a strange experience for me. But I plan to wear it proudly to look my best for the rest of my days.

Shout out for Doc Martens ! It took about 2 weeks to "break them in", but the pair of classic "cherry reds" I once owned were the only shoes that I ever formed any kind of emotional attachment to. With their "airware" soles, they were just so tough, but also comfortable, with that practical loop at the back for pulling them on, nice and snug (at least if you wear two pairs of thick socks as well, as I used to when hiking).
