Any thoughts about this?
Google, like other massive conglomerates, will do what Trump tells them to do.
Their slogan, "Don't be evil", is a hollow joke now. Just another bootlicker to the Republican Trump Party.
Gulf of America, are you havin' a larf all of a sudden. That thing has been Gulf of Mexico from GCSE onwards.
I can't go for that, no, no can do..
Ok cool I'm still calling it the Gulf of Mexico and I suggest anyone who also thinks this shit is stupid do so as well.
Can't be an official new name if nobody in the country uses it.

Speaking of silly name changes
GOP bill would rename Greenland to "Red, White and Blueland" (https://www.axios.com/2025/02/11/greenland-red-white-blueland-trump-republicans)
Do you get the feeling we're all living inside the head of some deranged clown who's himself incarcerated in a rubber room?

It's ludicrous, offensive, unnecessary and divisive.
My guess:
(i) in the USA this namechange will become a litmus test of loyalty to Trump, so expect it to turn up soon on NOAA and CDC websites and on the lips of fawning politicos.
(ii) the rest of the planet will look on and laugh at a President and country trying to make such petty, unilateral changes - as the President of Mexico has already done, to her credit.

As far as I can tell, outside the US it comes up as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)". I don't have many thoughts on this since it seems pretty straight-forward. The guy is a narcissist who likes to rebrand things and bend others to his will. Just another petty and stupid way to put his fingerprint on the world and make Pichai kiss the ring.

Google's reputation has always been dodgy at best, so no surprise here.
Yeah their "woke" arc was always just sticking their pointer finger out to the wind.
We already know about the Gulf of Mexico being renamed, and I postulate that New Mexico will be next (Old America?) but what other nonsense do you think Trump will use to try to reorder and re-label the world to fit in with his vision?
The Great Wall of China becomes the Mediocre Wall of China
Big Ben becomes Tiny Ben
The Great Barrier Reef is renamed to The All Right Barrier Reef
The Mexican hat dance is changed to the American hat dance
A Mexican standoff is now an American standoff
David Bowie's "China Girl" is renamed to "American Girl"
Martin Luther King Day becomes Some Black Guy Day
Cuban cigars are now American cigars
The Great War will now be known as I've Seen Better Wars
Any more?
France better watch it and be on their best behavior, or we're bringing back freedom fries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_fries). If Germany doesn't play ball, we'll bring back liberty cabbage (https://historyfacts.com/us-history/fact/during-wwi-americans-called-sauerkraut-liberty-cabbage/) too.
I'll think he'll rename the Internet forum SCD to CDT (Completely Donald Trump).
All this while CNN reports about "Big Balls" and "Hairy Balls", who knows how far these pseudonyms and sobriquets will go.

I think we need a catchy name for all this. "Scrotumgate"?

Microsoft will of course become MicroHard
Google will no longer use a multi-coloured/rainbow logo, but be instructed to use only red, white and blue.
The Eurovision will be changed to the Trumpovision and the Superbowl to the Trump Superbowl
The World Series will from now on only admit American tea - um. Yeah.
All churches will be instructed to replace their copies of the Bible with a copy of Trump: The Art of the Deal.

It's not often that my political guesses come true so promptly, so I can't let this news story pass by without comment:-
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/14/media/white-house-ap-ban-air-force-one-oval-office-gulf-of-mexico/index.html
QuoteThe Trump White House said Friday that The Associated Press is banned from the Oval Office and Air Force One indefinitely.
The AP, one of the world's biggest news outlets, was singled out by the White House earlier this week over three words: "Gulf of Mexico."
President Donald Trump said last month that the US government would rename the body of water the "Gulf of America." The change has taken effect at government agencies. But other countries do not recognize the new name, and the AP has customers around the world, so it still refers to the Gulf of Mexico while also acknowledging Trump's decree.
Shortly before Trump departed the White House for Mar-a-Lago on Friday, the administration confirmed that the AP would not be allowed on Air Force One for the trip, either.
In a statement on X, deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich pointed to the Gulf dispute, saying the AP's decision "is not just divisive, but it also exposes the Associated Press' commitment to misinformation."
So, under Trump, a free and independent press takes another hit. I also notice with disgust that, as so often, a Trumpist accuses their opponent of doing the exact thing that they themselves are guilty of. In this case, the word "divisive" is being applied, not to the namechange decision, but to the AP, who, for perfectly good international reasons are not going along with it. It makes me wonder how far this petty bullying will extend on the world stage: will countries who change their maps get better treatment from Trump? Will countries who don't change their maps get frozen out and labelled "divisive" like the AP has been?
Not only that, but he has the gall to use the word "misinformation". Who, after all, gave the US govt the right to unilaterally change the name of a body of water? I suppose we'll start hearing about "alternative facts" (and alternative maps) any day now. ::)
Merged these two threads as they're basically the same, and Quantum's was first, so I've merged mine with his.

And only yesterday at the Munich Security Conference JD Vance was lecturing europeans about censoring far right European groups. If only I Knew how to spell iron...

With all this stuff, I'm reminded of the satirical cartoon map (The World According to Ronald Reagan) created by David Horsey in 1987
