Title: Calling all Green Thumbs!!!
Post by: DJChameleon on May 21, 2023, 02:27 AM
Yeah so this is going to be the dedicated Garden thread. All gardening questions answered all the time. We can post pictures of our setups in here and just trade gardening tips.

I'm fairly new to gardening but the wifey wanted us to plant some stuff together.

We are only missing tiny pots to transfer our seeds once they start to sprout and also need to fence of the area that we are going to place our raised bed. There are way too many squirrels and rabbits here that will become super annoying to fend off.

If anyone has any tips for pests I'd love to hear what you got.

If you live in an area with rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and deer, you will almost certainly need to put some type of fencing around your garden. Rabbits and groundhogs will dig under fences to get to your plants, so if they are a problem in your area you will have to bury the bottom of your fencing in the ground to deter them. Deer can jump over fencing if it's too low, so that's something to consider, also. Squirrels and chipmunks can squeeze through holes in wire fencing, so if you use wire fencing make sure the size of the openings in the mesh are too small for them to squeeze through. They are very good climbers, though, so sometimes they might still be able to get into your garden if they are determined enough.

For insect pests, neem oil works great as an all-around pesticide and it's not harmful to beneficial insects. I use it throughout the growing season. Slug & snail bait is also a must-have for me.

If you make raised beds, make sure you can reach into the middle of the bed from the sides without having to climb into the bed to get to the middle of the bed. It just makes for easier gardening and you don't end up standing, kneeling, and walking in the bed and compacting the soil.

awesome thanks for all those tips I will take try them out.

Are there certain plants that also should be planted that act as natural repellents as well like lavender or catnip maybe?

QuoteIf you live in an area with rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and deer

All of those usual suspects are in my area. I went for my morning walk and all of them crossed the street in front of me as I was walking. I felt like a disney princess or something. It was strange how many I actually saw this morning.

I plant marigolds and nasturtiums every year because I like them and they're easy to grow. Both have a reputation of being natural repellents to some pests but I've never done any kind of controlled experiments to see how much of that might be fact and how much is just a proverbial old wives' tale. I've never grown lavender or catnip, so I don't have any experience with them.

yeah we decided to plant some flowers that are known to be easy to grow like tulips, sunflowers, Zinnia.

We also included Cosmos morning glory and chinese forget me nots and petunia.

Americans call it 'green thumbs'?

Mind is blown.

We call it green fingers.

Yeah, I've never heard green fingers. Also Cypress Hill had a big hit in the 90s with "Dr. Greenthumb".

Squirrels love to dig up tulip bulbs to eat, so you'll need to figure out what method you want to use to try to protect your bulbs from them. I like to plant morning glory in a spot where it can climb. Along the edge of a fence works good because you don't have to bother with a trellis.

Thanks for letting me know a Tulip I got for my partner for Easter died and we were going to plant the bulbs in the ground but now we have to plant them deeper than we were planning to.

Anyone had to deal with fungus gnats before? They're doing my head in now. I reckon I'm killing 50 of them a day and I'm following all the advice on not watering often and having gravel on top of the soil.

Its so annoying.

I've never had a problem with fungus gnats but using a systemic insecticide should work on them. I use neem oil as a spray for a general purpose insecticide on all my plants and I've heard it can also be used as a systemic insecticide for insects in the soil but I've never tried using it as a systemic.

YES they're awful. I found a product called Mosquito bits that worked super well - granular bits of corn cob containing a naturally-occurring bacterium that kills fungus gnat and mosquito larvae. You can sprinkle the bits on top of the soil and each time you water the bacterium releases into the soil. But I wouldn't recommend this for indoor plants due to decay/mold. Instead, you can steep the bits and use that to water. Safe for humans and animals, can be used in all soil. Brew a new batch once a week. Takes 3-4 weeks to break the life cycle.

Neem oil is good too but less effective on all life cycles - I've had much more success with infestation control with the mosquito bits. I do like to spray down and quarantine any new plants I'm bringing in with neem oil and a diluted alcohol solution to kill off any mealy bugs, aphids, etc.

Update on my garden situation: we didn't end up transferring them in time and they pretty much died off and because we are so far into summer we just decided to buy plants that are already grown and transfer to our garden space. Next year we will starting from seedlings again.

Okay, so this might sound gross.

Something I do these days is when I need to pee, I walk outside. I have a watering can with a spout that I pee into. Then I add about 9/10s of water to my pee and water whichever plant I think could use a little phosphorus and other nutrients.

For years, I peed in a can until it was full (took about a day) and then watered, but that inevitably led to a can of piss standing somewhere. One might forget the watering part and piss gets rancid quick. Doing this little ritual for every piss break takes care of that potential nuisance.

I do that sometimes, when my outdoor plants are scheduled to be fertilized. Once in a while I'll pour it undiluted onto my compost pile.

I love my garden most years but this year I've been so lazy with it. I got a beautiful new Hosta plant and some wild flowers planted but that's about all I have bothered with.

Can we post about house plants in here too? That's been my main focus this year and it's my first year having any so I think that is why I have neglected the garden a bit.

I have quite a few, I went from none to having 8 in the space of 2 months. They make me so happy 😂.

I have the cutest baby Boston Fern, 2 Cacti, a Kentia Palm, Prayer Plant, a Chinese Money Plant, Birds Nest Fern and a Money Tree. All pet friendly 😌.

I'll need to get some pics! Although one of my cats thinks they are salads so some look a bit scabby 🤦🏼♀️

Sorry.

I dunno what it is about house plants, they're just nice and make the windowsills look nice imo. I've put my bonnets outside now because the gnats were annoying me too much.

I'd like a nice flower or something to grow indoors. Or cacti but one that looks like ones from the desert.

Of course! The last time I tried was a few years ago. A little sour, not unpleasant, but it was one ant and honestly should probably eat a few more in a bite to get a proper assessment.

Yeah - or actually any ant, but the small black ones are the most popular, I guess. We have them in our garden where they farm aphids on our apple trees, the little bastards.

The species we got is Lasius niger, but they're called sugar ants (sukkermaur). Unfortunately not because they taste sweet, but because they're attracted to sugary things.

Really wasn't aware you could do that. I know there are some species that taste tangy and people snack on them but just eating ants you find in your garden... Maybe I am sheltered.

The French eat snails but we can't do that here cos the snails might have eaten toxic shit. You need to feed them carrots for a week or something to get it all out. Saying that I still wouldn't eat a snail, toxic or otherwise.

The ants are gone now anyway so no snacks for me  8)

I love a nice escargot, but definitely wouldn't eat any land snails or slugs that crawl around my garden.

It might be fun (if cruel) to brine them and see how many parasites come crawling out of them.

Looking good, Psy-Fi 🙂 We've got a few things out that we haven't harvested yet. Some carrots I believe, Jerusalem artichokes and we got two small apple trees that we planted a couple of years ago that are finally producing some nice apples.

Everyone ought to try Jerusalem artichokes. Scrumptious!

It looks like it's been overwatered. I would swap out the soil, but the planter size is probably fine based on the size of the roots. Roots want to be snug and secure. It should be strong enough to stand on its own, but the extra water retention is weighing it down.  The extra moister will lead to molding and fungus gnats. Always make sure the soil is thoroughly dried up to an inch deep before watering - especially in the winter.

Maybe I should place it outside on a super sunny day to dry up the soil. The temperatures are starting the dip in my area so I don't know how long I wanna leave it outside.

Always make sure the soil is thoroughly dried up to an inch deep before watering - especially in the winter.

DJ, I agree with degrassi.knoll. It is not necessarily the amoount of water you are giving it, but the fact that water may not be able to drain, and therefore stagnates. Does the white pot have holes in it? Or is there another pot inside that one? If not, then it would be good to drill a hole or a few small holes in the pot and place a saucer underneath which always contains a small amount of water e.g half a cup, so that the plant can soak up what it needs.

Yeah it doesn't have drain holes at the bottom. I would have to drill some holes for that. Thanks for the tips both of you.

You can make pots with no drainage holes workable by layering rocks beneath the soil and creating your own drainage area - but you still should always let the soil completely dry before watering again. It's easier for a plant to bounce back from not getting enough water than it is too much water - the roots themselves will rot.

Also! Running fans can help with drying the top soil to prevent mold. Additionally, in the winter when my home is high humidity I keep a spray bottle with a 1:3 ratio of isopropyl alcohol and water to spray the top layer of soil every couple weeks, also in the interest of mold/fungus prevention. Most plants can tolerate the alcohol in general but try to avoid spraying the leaves.

I also experiment with moss - but this is still very much trial and error. Some of my larger plants do well with a moist moss layer on top (watered with a spray bottle), and will absorb the moisture into the soil on its own time. But I haven't gotten it down to a science yet.  I use peat moss.

I'm getting my allotment back 😁😁😁 I gave it up throughout Covid lockdowns and have missed it so much. I got in touch and they added me to a waiting list again. but I expected to miss this years growing and possibly get one next year but they called me the other day 😁.

Any ideas on what I can grow? I'm going to buy things next week.

Onions and peppers are a must as well as pea pods but I fancy some new things too.

Potatoes
Some herbs
Turnips? (For your neeps and tatties)

If you can get a chicken to lay some eggs for you you can make a 100% organic tortilla de patatas.

Good idea! I should have some potato sacks in my garden shed from last time that I hopefully haven't thrown out.

I don't have chickens but one of my best friends does 😆

I'll suggest Jerusalem artichokes 🙂

They're easy (take care of themselves) and they taste delicious! Plus you can harvest them very late in the year, giving you something to do in November.

You get very farty from eating them, but hey.. what's a little warm wind from the south in the depths of a cold autumn or winter?

I have never heard of these. If they harvest in November they will be a good idea for some winter treats 😋

I bought a cactus/succulent hybrid that's blue. Will post a picture later on. I just hope that my cats stay away from it. I think cactus are okay but I've heard that nibbling on succulents is bad for cats.

Can anyone else confirm?

I'm not sure deej. I usually google it if it comes with the little info card. Sometimes it tells you on the info card too. Do you have pics of it?

I have a money tree (3 trees plaited). One had very little green on it but since spring it had a shoot with a tiny bit of new leaf growth. Yesterday it was fine and I was happy at the new growth, today it went black at the base of the new growth and died? I freaked out a bit and pulled it out the pot and the bottom of the trunk was squishy and kind of hollow.

I freaked out again and I've sat it outside for the time being until I hear back from someone on reddit. They'll tell me if I need to burn it and my house to the ground or if we're safe 😅😂

Yeah I googled it before buying but I was still a bit confused by the hybrid part of it. Cactus is safe but succulents aren't.

Places like wal-mart, home depot, lowes, etc are notorious for selling artificially colored plants and marketing them as rarities. Hate to break it to you but that's just a thimble cactus that's been painted blue. New spines will grow in white if it survives.

For the record, all cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti - so a "hybrid" is redundant.

Interesting good to know. I was confused by the hybrid nature of it.
