Title: Food
Post by: jimmy jazz on Feb 21, 2023, 01:13 AM
Do you like food? What food do you like to eat? What food do you dislike? What restaurants do you like? What are your controversial food opinions? Are you hungry?

This thread is for all things food.

Eat up!

I try to like everything. If I don't like something I keep trying until I do. If people like things I don't like I feel like I'm missing out.

My favourite is pizza but the food I eat the most is Mexican.

I wouldn't consider myself a "foodie" per se but I do all the cooking in our household and I'd say I'm fairly adept at following and tweaking various diverse recipes. It helps to have been raised by a mother who did the same, and having access to her secret archive of recipes accumulated since the 1980s.

I'm a big fan of Italian food, always love a nice pasta dish. I'm generally a fan of hearty dishes; I am on a fairly strict calorie diet but it just means I have to portion differently.

The other day we had chicken breast in raspberry cream sauce, a personal favorite recipe.

I'm a glutton and like just about anything, including dishes that others often find challenging. I like trying weird things and do so if I get the chance, like various fried bugs from a street vendor, fermented Greenland shark or lamb trotters wrapped in tripe.

My only problem with food is I have IBS and, uhm, let's just say it may be nice to have a toilet close by.. I love hot food, but it can upset my bowels literally for days. Fatty food and cod family of fish I also seem to react to, though not as bad.

Taking probiotics helped a lot, but had the unfortunate side effect of making me quickly gain like 10 pounds as I actually started digesting the things I eat

Maybe I posted this somewhere else, but this is one of my top want-to-eat-foods out there :)

The fly-maggot-infested Casu Marzu cheese. I figure people wouldn't put live maggots in cheese unless it was really good. And I do love cheese!

Title: Re: Food

bought the wild rice this time at the store to mix with the other Spanish style. I tried it the other day because that's all this small-town's store had. turned out so good I got both kinds this morning to mix together.

plus been eating the rice/chicken/sausage soup from the can, taking a cheap can of corn and draining the corn juice and dumping that corn into the soup like that photo I posted, pretty tasty

I posted about this on the other forum many years ago. Absolutely rancid. It's filled with maggot faeces. It's banned in the EU cos it's so dirty. And people have the cheek to criticise our cuisine!

Not trying to change your mind BTW hehe x

You'd probably have to go to Sardinia to try it. If you do you must review it mate.

simply adding corn considerably ups the quality of a budget meal

unshucked corn on the cob cooks really well in the microwave and is a much cheaper and healthier alternative to normal microwave stuff

We wanna eat less ultra processed food. We're not the biggest consumers as making meals from basic ingredients is the cultural norm here and something we do, but ultra processed food is still a regular part of o
our diet. Might not take much effort to get nearly rid of it, though.

Is anyone else doing something regarding this?
Title: Re: Food
Post by: jimmy jazz on May 10, 2023, 12:04 AM
It's rare that I will eat processed food but my diet would probably be considered boring.

Porridge oats, milk, frozen mixed veg, frozen fish, chicken thighs, beef mince, whey protein, skyr.

Is about 90% of what I eat.

I'm gonna nitpick like an insufferable douchebag, but all of those are processed foods.. unless you're sucking the skyr straight out of the cow's tit. It's just not ULTRA processed™️

You do sound healthy, but boring.

Frozen fish is washed and has its guts removed, which is processing. The veggies have been washed, diced and packed in some industrial process. The oats don't look like that on the plant, etc.

So if it's been processed, I'd call it processed.. but that word or the term processed food doesn't have negative connotations to me - until you slap the extra ULTRA on there. Or maybe an ÜBER. 😎

Yeah, we used to order out fairly regularly but we've had to scale back our budget so eating out is a last resort these days. It's actually been an improvement in several other ways besides saving money, we're eating healthier and it has encouraged me to try new recipes and get better at cooking.

Plus our more restrictive budget has kinda challenged me to work more with what I have and get better at improvising meals. Restrictions have always helped me be more creative, and I'm getting a lot of that now.

have you gotten into making and freezing smoothies

they're not super cheap but still about the best value you can get using real food - they're very flexible in terms of what you can put in and still taste pretty good - with an avocado and/or banana base you can basically go any vegan direction you want and it'll work

i make several at once and freeze them then when i drink one unfreeze the next - not exactly rocket science but it beats paying for less healthy brand bottles that cost much more per ounce - i use lots of spinach and kale 💪

another good thing to make in bulk is pasta sauce and similarly almost any vegan combination will do fine - i use exclusively food that's suitable eating raw - just blend it and put it in separate containers in the freezer- that way you don't have to cook everyday and raw vegan food is healthy

and if you want some meat just put it in the pan and dump the frozen or partially thawed sauce from earlier in with the meat and cook it together - you can go italian, oriental, fusion or whatever

and you don't have to use pasta as the base, rice or even potatoes are fine or just eat it like a soup or stew

i know i'm just saying obvious things but i wonder why more people don't do it - you have to eat and this approach is cheap and convenient and allows you to eat healthier food when you're rushed later in the weak

Pre-making and freezing pasta sauce is definitely a great idea, we eat a lot of stuff I could use that for, thank you for the advice!

It's not always obvious to everyone, I only really started cooking regularly after the lockdown era, I helped my mom in the kitchen a lot until I moved out at 24, but then I went about 8 years living alone without cooking much at all. So your advice is absolutely appreciated!

A foul wind from the southern regions has been blowing about our house as of late. A warm, pungent waft.

Yes, I am talking about the farts. I got it bad. My wife too. The poor children!

The reason is we grow our own vegetables and just had to eat a bunch of jordskokk. Internet tells me they're called Jerusalem artichokes in english? Sounds kinda crazy.

Anyways, they're DELICIOUS baked in the oven with some oil, salt and pepper, in a soup, oooh or sliced fine and baked with a cream sauce.

So good and easy to grow, but gods do they make you fart. It's the fartiest veggie there is, I'm sure.

and with fresh ginger it's easy to make tea

too much hassle for me, them shots were convenient. I might do another round of 4 shots each day for like 4-5 days. The problem is they cost a decent amount. I have been taking Turemirc pills since that post I made but that juice just feels healthier.

I ended up taking four sugar tablets and did like a cheat day thing by eating mickey Ds mostly because it was close and I needed an influx of sugar to help balance how I was feeling. I tried out the Grimace meal so I could get the purple milkshake. What a waste of an opportunity. I have no idea why they didn't go with a Ube flavor instead of the purple mess they came up with. I love cheese, though more reasonably priced brie is often a little mild. Still good, though. I love it with a bit of cherry jam or a dribble of nuts and a bit of honey.

I prefer rødkittost, but I've no idea what it's called in English. Maybe it's red smear-ripened cheeses? I love them <3

I don't mind the smellier ones and blue cheese is great, even on pizza. I had a lovely chunk of Gorgonzola when we recently went to France.

That's exactly right. The ones that make life worth living are the really strong ones and they're always really expensive. But then I like brie so much that during the pandemic I even accustomed myself to having the shitty Israeli version cause that's all I could find, and it's still pretty good all things considered.

A week ago, we came home from our 10 days vacation in Denmark. As somewhat of a foodie, one of the things that excites me in Danish stores is their lovely herring.

Here's a picture from the pantry. Fresh, brown farm eggs and a bucket of marinated herring filets. God damn do they go well together.

We also always get cheeses, but the Dan-something cheeses that are sold everywhere in Denmark are a little strange. They're relatively pungent and a little soft yellow cheeses. I like pungent cheeses. However, these typically aren't that good as a spread and also not particularly good when enjoyed on their own or, say, with crackers, wine and some grapes.

It's like I just can't figure out the best way to eat them. Maybe they're just not very good cheeses.

Their blue cheeses are alright, though.

I'm so mad right now. I went to cook some brown rice that wasn't opened that I got from Wal-Mart and there were two dead moths inside. They had to have been sealed inside from the fucking factory. My lunch is ruined.

I did a little research and I guess it's a thing.

Rice moths/pantry moths.

They were inside the bag because Wal-Mart left that particular bag in the store for a month or longer and they grew from eggs that were inside idk.

Yesterday, we were driving to some place when we saw a roadside sign saying someone was selling knåost, knead cheese. It's a creamy, heat treated cheese with caraway seeds. Me and my wife bought a bunch many years ago and it was so good and we've thinking about it ever since, but you can't get it anywhere so.. we were like STOP THE CAR!!

I rang the door and some old guy with a purple alcoholic's nose answered and yes, he didn't make the cheese himself, but he sold it from his freezer in the garage. Brilliant.

I bought three of the things and we later thawed one out. We tasted it. Yes, that's the stuff!

Then I found a fucking black hair in it. God damn it you old cheese wiz.

That's awful ffs that'd put me right off and probably off the rest of my food for that day.

When I was about 14 my mate kept on at me to go round his for a barbecue and I didn't really want to because I don't like eating other people's cooking but to be polite I was like OK.

His mom cooked me a burger and there was a hair in that but there was nothing I could do because I was sat with the family. So I had to swallow what was in my mouth and put the rest in a tissue then in my pocket without being noticed. Then I went to the bathroom and flushed it down the toilet.

I've never been to Alcatraz but I imagine that being freed from there feels almost as good as I did when I left this barbecue.

Thrilling story I know. Danny Dyer is going to play me in the Hollywood movie.

I can understand not liking other people's cooking when you live in England mate

Myself I've always loved it. My friends' moms were usually better cooks than mine, who tried very hard all her life to be a good cook but her years of apprenticeship involved making cookbook recipes with whatever ingredients she had at hand (i.e. Soviet slop) and with no feedback except from her loved ones. I suspect it threw her palate out of whack and she never recovered. When I was little I thought pizza was a really disgusting pie, like Russian cabbage pie except much much worse.

Whereas at friends' homes I've had really delicious Moroccan and Caribbean home cooking among others. Proper pizza too

The thought did cross my mind. Luckily it was straight and not curly.

As for other people's cooking etc. I'm the least picky eater I know. It's a very rare occurrence that I meet food that I wouldn't eat.

Something I do care about is food hygiene, so what sort of container the food is in, what it was grilled on or how it was treated. But unless I think something might be harmful, I'm game.

Like this cheese is made from boiled milk, so then I guess a hair is  nasty, but not actually harmful in any way.

I love beets, either baked and just part of a dinner, as a salad spread on a slice of bread or sliced and pickled and eaten either with a paté or in a rakfisk-wrap (fermented trout).

We had shrimps for dinner. Shraamp!!

My parents used to eat shrimp every Friday fairly regular for a number of years and always fresh from the boat and cleaned / picked by hand. In the south of Norway, that's generally how people get them.

I usually just eat them on white bread with mayonnaise, but spruced it up a bit today with dill and some finely chopped onion which was surprisingly good.

How do you like your carideans?

What are the little ones that are soft? Prawns? I don't mind them in seafood sauce in a sandwich but that's about it.

There are bigger ones that are more tough and a but stringy and I don't like those.

A lot of people like them in curries. I haven't made a curry in a long time but hopefully soon I will make one. Getting me excited now thinking about it.

Shrimp is one of my favorite things to use in dishes! Good old shrimp scampi is always a classic, and lately I've been making some shrimp wonton soup, shrimp dumplings, and seafood salad is always a good option to bring to potlucks and friend and family gatherings.

We have a dedicated seafood store right on our side of town that has been a go-to for all kinds of fresh seafood since I was a little kid, so because of that easy access I make seafood dishes very frequently.

These are some of my favourite cheeses:

- Red Leicester (best thing for Mexican cuisine and also grilled cheese sandwiches)

- Cheddar (best for cheese on toast with Worcestershire Sauce)

- Stilton (love it tbh will just bite into it like an apple heh)

- Shropshire Blue

- Most kinds of chilli cheese

- Smoked German cheese

- Emmental

- Mozzarella (used generously ffs)

- Pecorino (as above, Carbonaras should be fucking covered in this imo)

- Feta (nice on chips)

- American processed cheese slices (doesn't matter how artsy fartsy a burger is this is the only cheese to be having on it imo)

- Wensleydale (preferably with apricot in)

- Roquefort

- Halloumi (grilled, this is sensational)

- Camembert

- Gorgonzola

- Bleu d'Auvergne (might be number 1 tbh)

Get in the bin:

- Goat's cheese (tastes like how a farm smells)

- Casu Marzu

beets are great. you should try them in a salad with oranges, roasted hazelnuts and soft goats cheese + oil and balsamic, it's delicious.

When it comes to cheese it's generally the stronger the better for me, but somehow I like my brie soft and mild instead. Blue cheese is delicious on a burger, and I love putting blue cheese + anchovies pizza which all my friends think is very cursed

Also I love goats cheese but 'tastes how farm smells' made me lol

I'd be willing to try again but I put Stilton on a burger once and it was shit. I don't think it's the right kind of flavour.

Needs that classic American cheese flavour.

my cheese rating:
top tier (roughly in order):
roquefort <3
good mature Dutch cheese - incredibly versatile and with a rich, salty flavour
pecorino and parmesan - smelly deliciousness
Mozzarella, the proper soft & wet kind, not that rubber shit
mild brie
goats cheese
feta

good:
tomme de savoie
cheddar - not Dutch cheese but still great
gorgonzola and danish blue and misc French blue cheeses I've tried - very nice but just not roquefort

all right:
sheep's cheese
halloumi - very nice when grilled on occasion

meh:
stilton - all right but it's like cheddar with blue mold which is an odd combination
paneer - useful but bland

nah:
camembert
emmental

I'm also not crazy about goat cheese, but I've had really good ones on rare occasions.

Yesterday evening, I took the boat out and placed a crab trap with the paddock we got a couple of days ago as bait. I took the kids out before breakfast today and collected it and it had 8 edible crabs in it, 7 big ones and a small one that we tossed back in.

I put them in the freezer to sedate them while we took out the big pot and brought some water to a boil with a couple of handfuls of salt. Then we boiled the crabs and had them with baguettes for breakfast.

Like the shrimp, I generally just eat it on white bread with some mayonnaise and a squeeze of lemon.

I used to eat the brown meat, but don't anymore as it's so rich in cadmium and potentially other metals.

I'll admit I mostly did it because we had guests who are unfamiliar with our seaside culture and so wanted to show them some of the traditions. I only eat crabs about once a year now, though we would often take the boat out at night, bring a flashlight and hand pick crabs from the reefs when I was a kid / teenager.

Still, it's been a while now and was surprisingly yummy.

Yesterday, me and my wife went to this Portuguese food event at a wine bar in town. It was organized by a newly started 3 man import business who import portuguesian wines. Their "talent scout" is from Portugal and had worked with a chef to present various wines along with traditional portuguesian dishes.

There was so much food, like roe salad, squid salad, croquettes, fish soup, things I don't know the name of. It was all delicious. I had to skip dessert, though, as after 5 hours of eating, our babysitter was wondering where we were.

Then we just had blue mussel soup today. Sometimes we pick the mussels ourselves, but today we just got them from the store on our way home from the beach. We got a bad batch as a lot of the shells were dead and were tossed aside, but there was still enough for dinner and it was really delicious.

This is what a bowl of soup and blue mussels might look like here.

I'm a big fan of most seafood honestly, and mussels are no exception.

I haven't cooked for dinner since we came down with Covid. I've been making breakfast though, I threw together chorizo omelettes for both of us yesterday. Turned out pretty good, the spiciness I think helped to offset the reduced sense of taste from Covid.

We don't eat mussels regularly, but every summer I get a craving for them at least once.

It's a bit weird, but I don't think I've ever eaten cockles. They're often easy to find here if you're on a beach, but for some reason, there's just no culture for eating them.

I had razor clams last year. It was okay, but not great. Oysters are likewise. I'll eat them, but have no special love for them.

I like when the chicken thighs are cooked very well so the skin is crispy and the meat falls off the bone.

I put some jerk rub on the chicken. When my scotch bonnets have been harvested I'll make jerk marinade again and can do it that way. Much better.

Yknow, that's a good point. I'm going to cop to the possibility that I just haven't ever had good ones. I had it a few times as a kid, didn't like em, then a couple years ago, decided to try them again. I was fine eating them, but they definitely didn't win me over and wouldn't be something I ordered again if I had alternatives. For me, condiments are also a big factor, and maybe I just don't know what's best for my tastes in terms of dipping scallops. With fried shrimp, I love both cocktail sauce and tartar sauce, but with scallops, I'll use whatever they (the restaurant) serve with it.

I'm a condiment junkie. When I have breaded chicken - I dip that shit in seven different condiments on my plate, assuming I have them all at the ready (ranch, honey mustard, barbecue, Chic-Fil-A sauce, sweet and sour sauce, chipotle-mayo sauce, and tonkatsu sauce)

The other thing I've found with fried scallops is that they, somehow someway always get cold quicker than fried shrimp. And I hate cold fried food.

Had a really nice lamb curry yesterday, paid the price when I went to the toilet this morning. They had it in medium spicy, spicy and Indian style. Thanks god I went for spicy and not Indian style. That would've been gnarly.

Anyone here a fan of south Indian, maybe @Nimbly9 ? As in all those plant pastes that contain maybe 20 different spices and taste like nothing we're used to (as opposed to the meat curries and other staples of what the Brits sold to the world as Indian cuisine). I like the experience of tasting something really new but I also need some fucking protein in my meal, not just bean pastes and bread and mango pickles, y'know?

The other thing I've found with fried scallops is that they, somehow someway always get cold quicker than fried shrimp. And I hate cold fried food.

Try scallops at a proper French restaurant to have your mind blown by how good they can be. They're super easy to overcook and the seasoning needs to be super precise.

I learned this the hard way that it's easy to overcook them then it becomes super chewy and rubbery.

I like the experience of tasting something really new but I also need some fucking protein in my meal, not just bean pastes and bread and mango pickles, y'know?

I am a fan.  My fiancee is Punjabi, but she's a bit of a cooking fanatic and loves to experiment to blend regional styles. One time she showed me some Chicken Frithad variation she made with an interesting spin on the spices (something to do with cardamom) and it was fantastic.

A couple more food items from the land of the fishy bread spreads.

A very popular spread here is mackerel mashed in tomato sauce. It's almost always eaten with mayonnaise and in Denmark, you can find it ready mixed with mayonnaise and called mackerel salad.

Anyways, this is what it might look like:

Today, I ate a tin of sardines we've had in the fridge for about a year. I always prefer pickled herring which we always have, so this tin hasn't been prioritized. However, it was a special one as this one came from Poland or Lithuania or something and looked real fancy with gold lettering and a see-through lid.

I always eat sardines like this with mayo and these were real good, much better than the ones we usually get. They were a little bit salty and smoky.

Without delving into the topic, I figure it must be one of the healthiest bread spreads out there.

@jimmy jazz maybe you should consider swapping your pre-workout tuna snack for sardines 🙂

I have eaten sardines, mackerels and pilchards in tins. With tomato sauce in them as well. I don't particularly like them and prefer tuna but I could switch it up every now and then.

You can get mackerel fillets in all sorts of sauces in tins and they are elite but they're also expensive. Sardines and pilchards not so much but not as nice imo.

There's some kind of tinned fish in tomato sauce that a few guys used to have after training (or before? not sure) in the bar area of my old gym in Canada and the smell was horrendous. Visually too looked awful. Among the most disgusting things I've ever seen. That bad.

The tinned tomato mackerel here should definitely not go anywhere except onto bread and then inside the body. It doesn't smell great and anything it touches gets a reddish oil stain. It quickly ruins childs' clothes.

It's pretty nasty, but it tastes good.

I remember this from Norwegian television in the 90s.

Another fishy spread that I think is way more popular here than most places is smoked and salted cod's caviar. It comes out of a tube and is eaten as a spread like this:

Again with the mayonnaise. Most of us are so white up here.

Is this familiar to anyone else?

I can do sardines. Used to have to eat them often when I was younger same with mackerel. Not a fan of them anymore.

I'm on the tuna train right now. My typical lunch is a cup of brown rice and some tuna fish.

I dig sardines. That mayo and sardines on bread feels like it would really hit the spot.

And tuna is always a staple food for both of us. One go-to sandwich I pack for the mister's work lunches is a basic tuna salad on honey oat bread with lettuce, red onion and deli mustard. For myself I really like adding a little kick to my tuna salad by swirling in some of the liquid from a jar of pickled jalapenos into it; I like the texture better than adding the jalapenos themselves and you can easily adjust it to taste.

Not trying to bum anyone out, but.. while I do eat tuna and like it a lot, I personally wouldn't eat cans of it every week due to the high Mercury content 🤔

While I'm an adventurous eater, I'll admit I can get hung up on things like this. But anyways, bigger fish = more mercury, roughly speaking.

But I also saw an interview with David Lynch where he says he eats tuna every day and he seems.. fine?

There is mercury in it but you have to eat a lot more than a few cans a week. I eat one tin a day and I'm fine. I'd have to eat three or four times that over a prolonged period of time to poison myself.

Tasty, tasty tuna! 🐟

I always thought advertising that tuna has high mercury was just a fear tactic. I don't think the average person consumes enough to be worried about it. I would advise against pregnant women consuming it.

Appreciate the concern! It's not always the same week to week, but I guess on average I usually will pack him a tuna sandwich once to twice a week, and I'll usually eat one myself for lunch maybe once a week. I'd wager on the low end of 7-8 ounces of it on an average weekly basis for each of us.

But admittedly mercury is not something that's on our mind all the time, so thanks for looking out. We do eat other seafood pretty frequently but it's usually lower mercury stuff like shrimp and salmon. But it's worth looking into, for sure.

A previous health anxiety made me wary of stuff like this and while it's a long time since I struggled with that, I have some lingering concerns.

For similar reasons, I'm hesitant to indulge too much in game meat (lead from bullets) or whale meat (like tuna, but maybe worse).

Rakfisk is one of our traditional dishes and very popular around Christmas, like he says.

You don't really get a good impression of it here. It does smell pretty strong and the taste is fairly intense, but we eat it in a wrap with sour cream, red onions, swede and carrot mash, pickled beets. You'd probably like it 🙂

I'll share some pictures next time we have it.

Today we bought a lutefisk which is a large cod that has been bleached and slightly jellied in lye. It's even better than the rakfisk 🥰

Edit:

By the way, people have died from getting botulism from eating rakfisk, so I'd be just a tiny bit hesitant to eating the stuff made by these guys 😅 like that big hairy hat. Won't he get hairs in there? Goddamn savages. Hair nets, gloves and white suits, if you please.

Cool! I think it seems gross to people before they try it and that's understandable, maybe. But the flavour is mild, so good and the texture is wonderful. I think most who try it will like it. It's one of my favorite traditional Norwegian foods for sure.

We eat it with mashed peas, potatoes, mustard, some mysterious white sauce and sprinkles of finely cut and crispy fried bacon.

Norway is just mountains, seaside and lakes, so of course it's salmon country. Our favorite way to eat salmon is sushi bowls. I picked up a sashimi quality salmon loin on the way home from work. It's a little expensive (though hopefully less so here than where you are as it's local food) but it's so delicious.

It's served raw, though marinated, in a bowl with rice, edamame beans, fresh coriander, sesame seeds, maybe carrot shavings, a bit of cucumber, some sesame seeds, lots of chili mayo, etc.

It's delicious and I always end up overeating when we have it.

This isn't my picture, but it's kinda like this:

Find it interesting how flags are on the produce of whatever country you buy the food in.

Here it's almost excessive and I wonder how much it happens in other countries. People seem to love that shit here. Big Union Jacks on your eggs and milk and cheese and pretty much everything else. I get why you would want to buy local but it's noticeable how much the flag is on these things.

It happens less in Scotland now (with the Union Jack) as they tend to appease the nationalists. They actually have a campaign up there, "If its got a Jack, put it back" 😂, so they use the saltire instead. They also have to call British Gas 'Scottish Gas' up there even though its the same company. Pathetic. I don't think I've ever seen a St George's Cross on any produce ever.

Speaking of yellow peas, I found some raw ones scattered on the kitchen floor when I was a toddler and proceeded to put a few up my nose for some strange reason.  As the day went on and I became more and more uncomfortable, my family figured out what I had done and I was rushed to a local medical clinic.  The doctor had to remove the peas (which had since traveled way up my nose) using a long forceps-type bent scissor.  Fun.

Oh man, you really lined yourself up for some pea brain jokes here. Must resist temptation!!

Pretty sure it's a type of dessert pie. But it just means banana and toffee so you could theoretically have banoffee loads of things.

You could have banoffee pie or banoffee ice cream. Banoffee pie is popular. You probably mean that.

I haven't had it BTW. I don't eat sweet things.

I was wondering what your verdict is on it but yeah you don't eat sweets so. I shouldn't be eating sweets but I do anyways. I try to stick to fruits to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings but my wife loves snacks and there is always so much temptation in the house.

Any other avid oatmeal eaters in this thread?

What are your favorite oatmeal toppings? I have come to the conclusion recently that I don't like fresh raspberries as much as I do the artificial flavoring of it. The texture reminds me too much of strawberries which I'm not a fan of either.

I mainly stick to bananas and blueberries in my oatmeal but I'm looking to spruce it up some. Maybe I will find inspiration in others.

Honey if I eat it out a bowl.

But I just put it in a protein beaker as you know.

I absolutely love raspberries and bananas. Strawberries I'm less keen on because they have less give to the texture and I like the juiciness of a good raspberry.

I'm thinking about putting chia seeds or trying out flax seeds in my oatmeal and maybe some greek yogurt.

I love raspberries and just had some on top of Greek yogurt this morning. I don't really notice the seeds in raspberries because they're small and velvety.

I don't like blueberries, especially if they're bitter.   Don't care for their mushy/woodsy texture either.

I don't mind blackberries flavor-wise, but they're way too seedy.

I like strawberries, but they have to be very ripe.

Am I picky enough about berries?

For oatmeal, Bob's Red Mill Scottish porridge is by far my favorite - so smooth and delicious!

It's just slightly firmer with a slightly drier texture. It definitely feels like a healthier yoghurt.

Yes, I have Skyr occasionally – it's a bit milder and even thicker than Greek yogurt.  I like it, but buy Greek yogurt much more frequently because it's less expensive here.  I eat a lot of Greek yogurt, practically every day.

Probably medium rare but controversy alert, I don't think steak is all that and I could take it or leave it.

I'd go for a cheeseburger before a steak.

Think it's overrated tbh. When it's less than top quality it's just average or shit, when it's top quality it's decent but not as nice as a cheeseburger. I'd actually marry a cheeseburger.

If anything I can understand putting ketchup on it more if it's a well done steak, the ketchup would offset the dryness.

You'll never catch me putting ketchup on steak under any circumstance though. Marinades and creative seasoning can really do a lot to give it a rich flavor.

Having European posters on this forum, it's brought up a question in my mind that I've never really thought about. Is your 'chinese cuisine' in your country the same (or similar) to the 'chinese cuisine' that's popular in America?

I'm guessing most of us know that Chinese food (by and large) in America isn't genuine, authentic Chinese food. It's an Americanized version that's been adapted and altered by Chinese-Americans to suit the taste of broader America as a whole. If much of western Europe has the same 'chinese food' that Americans know and love, how did that happen? Was it a case of it getting popular in America first and then being culturally exported? Or did the Chinese independently (and concurrently) popularize Chinese food in European countries at the same time as they were popularizing it in America?

One other thing about Chinese food that I want to mention in regards to America - for many Americans, Chinese food is very popular around the holidays - I can speak to my family that we often have Chinese food on the evening before Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. It appears this became popular originally among non-Christian immigrants in America in the 1800s, as they had time off, but didn't have the same cultural celebrations/traditions as many Christian Americans did, and they found that, unlike many other restaurants, the Chinese restaurants were open during holidays - and so eating Chinese food on holidays became a kind of American cultural pastime that's bled out to a large number of Americans. The 'melting pot' of America in action.

We were at the Under restaurant yesterday. I wrote in the Your Day thread I'd post some pics of the dishes, but thought this thread was a better fit.

Here's a pic of the restaurant I took earlier this year.

Here's a pic where you can get an idea of the interior.

So the main attraction, besides the food, is of course the dining area being underwater where you can watch fish, jellyfishes, sea stars and other sea creatures go about their day as you eat.

It was 10 dishes all in all and generally not a lot on each plate.

For starters, we had a small ball of lardo and crayfish and then also (harder to see) a piece of flatbread with turnip and bits of salted and dried lamb's leg. The flatbread was delicious.

I didn't try the moss.

Next was a potato waffle heart with a local sort of cream cheese and herring roe. Probably sounds weird, but I loved this ❤️

Then it was scallops in a sauce with apples or something? It was delicious.

Heart salad with a wild onion dressing and some rye. One of my wife's favourites.

Then crayfish in some root vegetable sauce with seaberries. This may have been the best one.

Monkfish with celery and barley. Very nice.

Lamb with beets and blackcurrants. Splendid.

Jerusalem artichoke ice cream with blackberries. Very nice.

Some kind of pudding made from blueberries and a kind of red algae served with sour cream. Exquisite!

And the final dish was just some Odd snacks and a very good cup of coffee.

Wife had wine and I had the alcohol free juice package. All in all, it came to 585 dollars at the current exchange rate and the sad state of the Norwegian crown.

Still worth it and a very nice experience!

Today I just wanna stuff my face with junk.

That looks awesome! I really need to get off my ass and visit some Michelin star restaurant, been wanting to for ages.

Wow, that looks so cool, @Guybrush ! I've been to an underwater restaurant once, my family spent a day at Seaworld in Florida on a vacation in 2004 and they had one. I don't remember too much but I'm sure it was much less ritzy, haha.

I do enjoy a good night out at a nice restaurant as well, hopefully that will be in the cards for this year's double birthday event.

Yes, this is the second time in my life that I have a restaurant experience of Michelin caliber and last time wasn't quite this fancy. As an adventurous eater, it's a lot of fun ❤️

Yes, I love it when I get to do it like this; great food and combinations I've never had before and no kids 😅

I knew they would do mostly seafood dishes but something about that rubs me the wrong way.

It would be like eating hamburgers in front of a pasture farms with cows grazing in the field.

You are eating stuff while looking at their live counterparts.

The species we could see actually weren't on the menu and they too were eating seafood, so I figure it's alright 🙂
