It might be implying racism (to the point of murder) on part of the old man which might not even be true.

If it's clear that the killing was racially motivated, then that becomes relevant information. But even so, I think one should exercise some care with what you put in a title.

Moscow struggling with narrative to justify war as Wagner chief questions 'Nazis' claim, says UK

If Russia is to have any future it must shed WW2 victory as its unifying myth. Domestically it's a completely sinister ethno-nationalist myth about Russian superiority. What's funny is that for decades it was used to recruit useful idiots to the communist cause abroad, what Francois Furet calls "the myth of anti-fascism": to be properly anti-fascist you have to join those who defeated them, who are naturally the polar opposite of everything fascism stands for.

What's even funnier is the myth's resurrection among bored and ignorant American kids who adopted "leftist" as an online identity, esp after 2016. It must make a lot of sense when your brain is hardwired by Star Wars and video games and other media for children. You would normally see a couple of losers wearing the Soviet flag shirts at various student protests in Montreal, where we have a long tradition of youthful radicalism, esp in Concordia and UdeM. But after 2016 it became a broader phenomenon, esp on Twitter.

one reason to admire stalin is because he beat hitler and another is that he killed millions of capitalists

both of those things are true but with asterisks

*he beat hitler with help
*he killed a lot of poor people

the only thing i really know about the war in ukraine is that it was a border crossing but besides that i don't know anything about ukraine - i do know it's europe and if europe cares about russian expansion they should deal with it - i'm against expansionist border crossing and humankind has done a good job making them taboo even in africa- however, in principle, i object to the united states arming anyone ever - i don't care if it's not even the same region sooner or later those weapons will be in the middle east

but back to the point, if tankies want to wave the hammer and sickle i'm cool with that because at least i know they hate capitalism and destroying capitalism is our only hope

if russia invaded scandinavia i'd 100% support american intervention on behalf of scandinavia, however

if russia invaded estonia i'd be like gosh england should do something

maybe it doesn't make sense

i actually think it's sort of like justifying glue traps - i care about this i don't care about that - i don't want those mice to suffer - i don't want ukraine annexed (is that using the word correctly?) by putin - but i'm not taking up personally for ukraine any more than those mice - the suddenly we really care about this country thing is nonsense

the last number i think i heard was $250 billion in weapons - i would much rather build free clinics and homeless shelters in america- not that they have to be exclusive

montana - it's supposed to be live and let live out there

i wonder if the republicans in this exchange understand that they will be universally looked on as villains in the future and just don't care because they'll be dead or if they really think they're right

the republican that stands and says "we will not be shamed like this" is it because she knows she's shameful

idk

and when they intentionally misgender her it reminds me of calling a jew christ killer

If there's one thing we can learn from Stalin's record is that the reality of mass murder cannot be confined to distinctions based on economic theory or even on rungs on the societal ladder. The logic behind the purges and population transfers was "to build communism and engineer a classless society we need to cleanse society of X" and that X kept shifting between demographic groups (or soslovya as they were called in Czarist Russia). The category of the "enemy of the people" just kept expanding in all directions until everyone was suspect. In the last few years of his life Stalin finally decided to cleanse society of the "rootless cosmopolitans" and the "Zionists", and thanks heavens he died before he could implement it (the "doctors plot" was a prelude). Jews didn't catch many lucky breaks during the 20th century but that was one.

The idea that you can isolate a "class enemy" from hate based on other characteristics already ingrained in a given society is a fantasy.

i put a damn asterisk beside it

good history stuff though - i've read a fair amount on the ol codger but i basically just remember he was mean

QuoteA white former police officer convicted of manslaughter after mistaking her handgun for a Taser and fatally shooting Black motorist Daunte Wright in suburban Minneapolis in 2021 is set to be released from prison Monday.

so if i mistake my revolver for a taser and "accidentally" kill a cop will i also have to spend an entire year in prison

i watched that video a bunch of times and i really do believe it was a mistake but she had no business tazing him either -

nice journalism pointing out the race of those involved but miss me with capitalizing black but not white

that is some wildly anti-white racism

it's white journalists who decided on that - it's a kind of white power arrogance to think it's ok to present whites as lesser because these poor ol coloreds will never rise up and distribute some hard comeuppance - whitey is untouchable, don't you know

almost all of those same journalists live completely locked away from poor blacks though

they might come into the hood - with a full posse of protection and after the police get there

cowardly racist classist fascist honkeys want to tell me black is a real culture but white isn't

my southern white trash culture is real and unless you wanna find out the hard way you better recognize

Re: Capitalising one and not the other, I've noticed that as well.

@jadis absolutely mental news story. I feel so sorry for Seles.

Only God knows.

i remember when that stabbing happened

i was on a road trip in a car with just a radio and i must've heard that scream 15 times at least

No, you're doing a great impression of an old catholic school marm. Keep it up.
