I read the CBC News story on this and she's definitely a fraud. Her real name is Beverly Jean Santamaria. I've lost count of how many white people I've met in North America throughout my life who've claimed to have some American Indian ancestry. It seems to have started in the 60's and became a trendy thing to claim for some people. Unlike most of those I've met, who tend to look whiter than a blizzard in January, at least "Buffy" looks like she could pass for the role of an American Indian in a movie or TV show.

Sainte-Marie has a birth certificate in Stoneham, Massachusetts. That document allegedly indicates that Sainte-Marie - whose full name on the certificate is Beverley Jean Santamaria - was born to Albert, who was Italian-American, and Winifred Santamaria, whose parents had mostly English ancestry.

With the counter-argument being:-

in the early 1960s, she connected with a couple from Piapot First Nation in Saskatchewan, who eventually adopted her as one of their own.

The couple's granddaughter, Ntwanis Piapot, told Global News that the adoption process took several years and was done in Cree custom.
A statement by the family dismissed the CBC's investigation and affirmed that Sainte-Marie is a "beloved member" of the community.
"No one, including Canada and its governments, the Indian Act, institutions, media or any person anywhere can deny our family's inherent right to determine who is a member of our family and community," the family said.

It's an intriguing question, and this morning I listened to this song to try and work out how I felt about it:-

Should I worry that she's not the real deal? After all, when Elton John sang Rocket Man, I kind of guessed that he wasn't actually an astronaut.

Bottom Line: It would've been more honorable for her to turn down these awards, so that DNA-type indigenous musicians had a better chance:-

Throughout her career, Sainte-Marie has won various awards reserved for indigenous musicians, including four of Canada's indigenous lifetime achievement awards.

Driver says he hit a deer, but police found a dead body in his car

A man is in custody facing criminal charges after police say he fatally struck a pedestrian in Dallas, then drove nearly 40 miles to a fast food restaurant in White Settlement with the victim's dead body in his passenger seat.

White Settlement Police said they were called to a restaurant parking lot at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday after a restaurant customer reported a vehicle in the parking lot with extensive damage and the driver slumped over the steering wheel. An officer arrived a short time later and noticed a lifeless person was also in the front passenger seat.

Police said detectives believe the impact was so severe that the 45-year-old pedestrian was thrown inside the vehicle while he was in the cross walk near Cockrell Hill Road and I-30 in west Dallas. Police say his legs were recovered from the scene. The rest of his body was found in the passenger side of Lujan's vehicle in White Settlement, police said.

Despite a badly damaged hood and a large hole in his windshield, investigators say Flores drove 38 miles before stopping at the Jack in the Box parking lot between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., at least two hours before police were called by the customer.

Wow, that reminds me of that case with the woman who hit that guy with her car.. was he homeless? And as he was injured and stuck to the windshield, she just drove on home, parked the car in the garage and let him die there.
