Title: The House Music Thread
Post by: SGR on Jun 16, 2023, 02:43 AM
Yeah, I made it. I effin love House music. I'm an addict. I love dancing, I love the vibes, I love the energy, I love the atmosphere. It's all about that House music. So this is a thread to discuss House music and share your latest findings, your old favorites, or house mixes that you like. Here's a recent find of mine from Matroda - warning: highly addictive:

House is hecka dope, though I tend to greatly prefer instrumental variants. Acid house and deep house are very much my shit though, especially the really early stuff from the 80s/early 90s.

This track is an eternal vibe, from 1986 but still hits.

@SGR post something that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and makes me want to take my top off and balloon around like a madman in a very hot Ibiza nightclub.

Thanks.

First two are better. I can really see myself dancing like a bellend with those.

Second isn't bad but it doesn't hit me in the same way.

Danielle (Fred Again) is still the best tune I've heard from this style of music. Might be one of my favourite songs ever tbh.

Fred is so talented ffs.

Fair! Sounds like you're more into smoother house with occasional piano inflections. If you haven't explored MK's discography (classic house musician), you might like his stuff. Here's one of his more recent singles with Sonny Fodera (another top notch DJ in his own right):

I actually was put onto the song by one of my all time favorite house sets, a b2b between Sonny Fodera and MK on a German subway train:

Not sure if you're into house sets/mixes, but if not, definitely check some out. I have probably a million recommendations, but that one is as good a starting point as any. It's, in my opinion, the best way to experience house music, especially live.

Another one of my favorites is this one - played by legendary and inimitable house DJ Frankie Knuckles as the opening track to one of his Boiler Room sets (RIP):

Bonus:

This Covid classic remix of Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard?" by Alan Fitzpatrick:

I stumbled upon this megamix of classics and I'm going to run it back and have a house music party in my living tonight with just myself, my partner and my cats. Hopefully, I feel much better than I do currently.

I stumbled on that guy's old school mixes a couple years back. He's got a bunch of them too! He definitely broadened my horizons into more of the older house classics. Great stuff! To this day, you'll still hear "Finally" playing in grocery stores, and I'm here for it.

Sonny Fodera has a lot of great tracks, but this relatively older one is still his greatest work in my opinion. The vibes are just perfect.

And yet it's not his best track for closing a set - that would be this gem.

All props to Sonny Fodera, but damn, his recent stuff doesn't hit nearly as good as his old stuff.

Those are cool, loved the first one especially. Love that crunchy bouncy bass.

This dude is a synth demo Youtuber, I'm not even sure his stuff is on streaming, but he has a knack for house and he does it all with hardware synths.

Round One, one of the many aliases of Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald a.k.a. Basic Channel

Northern Exposure by Sasha and John Digweed is one of the best DJ mixes ever. Fantastic groove from start to finish, with gems like this along the way.

I've had this album in my queue for a long time now. Finally getting around to listening to it today, and you're right, it does slap. Wow, it feels like a sunny, breezy fever dream. The thing that's put me off of it for so long is the run time, but it actually works pretty well as background music while I work.

@jimmy jazz

So not sure if you're aware of this Jimmy, but Romy's debut solo album (Mid Air) dropped recently, and Fred Again was a big contributor to the production of the album. I'm guessing you heard the lead single since Fred played it in his Boiler Room set:

Here's the opening track from the album, also produced Fred (yeah, I think you're right, this has convinced me that he'd make something great with Dua):

If you didn't already know, Romy is a member The XX. In retrospect, I'm guessing Jamie XX's production style was an influence on Fred. If you've never checked out their stuff, I'd highly recommend it:

I still wanna get plastered in a club and drunkenly sing: "FIND MY, FIND MY, FIND MY WAY!"

I just recently discovered Fred Again. He's fantastic, but not a very good DJ. I've watched that Boiler room a bunch and I love it, but he screws up twice himself and one of the audience members touched his equipment twice and screwed him up. I watched another set he did with Skrillex and Four Tet in Times Square and he was screwing up left and right there too.

He just get's so excited (which is absolutely adorable) that he bounces around and touches things he doesn't mean to. I love all his production work though. Super talented guy.

The Boiler Room set was fine imo, it was that overexcited fan who messed up.

I don't know that much about DJing anyway. His tune selection is on point though imo.

But yes his production is top notch. Honestly made me love dance music again.

I wish he would put another album out soon. We are due one. Also want him to stop wasting tunes on shit MCs and just make his euphoric summer bangers. He hasn't made a genuinely good album yet but I think he has the potential to. Then again dance music isn't really an album genre.

Anyway, Fred 8)

I am a bedroom DJ (on a Pioneer DDJ400), and have DJ'ed a lot. Have created my own house mixes. And have played for friends/family. I can say that no one other than other DJs really care about your 'technical ability' or how seamlessly and in key one track mixes into the next or how well you use effects - the regular folks care primarily about your energy and track selection and Fred does all that extremely well.

I just got back from the KREAM show in Boston. Man, the ticket said the show starts at 9:30. Me being a dumbass assumed that's when KREAM started - we couldn't even get through the doors properly until 9:30. From there, there were actually three opening DJ sets, all lasting an hour. KREAM finally came on, and their set went for an hour and a half. It was about 2am before the show ended, and it was so late, the Amtrak wasn't running, so we had to get an Uber. Finally back at my brother's place at 4am. I regret none of it. KREAM played a great, great set. This is honestly the first live house show I've attended, and one of the things I noticed is that the bass was so boosted, that many details in the treble were completely lost - definitely not like listening at home - but a different feeling in good ways as well, nonetheless. The collective energy was incredible. Anyone else attend live house shows that could share their experience in regards to the overly pronounced bass? Here are some pictures I took at the show.

Kind of looks like a smaller venue maybe that's why some of the sound was off and not as clean as when you listen to it at home along with the boosted bass as well.

Yeah it wasn't a huge venue. It was Big Night Live if anyone has ever been. It presents itself as a combination between a posh club and an ideal rave venue. Let me tell you, I've never felt more like an anchovie in a tin can. There were women (intentionally or unintentionally) grinding on my brother. Constant interruptions from people moving through the line, back and forth, to get drinks/go to the bathroom. I had one dude come up and dap me up for looking like Jack Harlow. A french dude tried to steal my spot with a slick accent. Another woman called my brother an idiot for planning to drive home after the show (assuming he was drinking, he's stone sober). It was certainly wild.
