What's the latest movie you've seen?

Wow, I might have to add that to the list. Who doesn't like an entertaining trainwreck? 🙂

It's only really a trainwreck in comparison to the original story. On its own it's just a vapid soulless groaner of a film, but it's fun to watch to see just how badly they messed the adaptation and the message up. It's just bizarrely fascinating and makes you wonder why anybody thought this movie needed to exist.

In other words, go for it!

The Last Alarm (1940)

A fireman reaches mandatory retirement age and doesn't know what to do with his free time now that he's no longer working for the fire department. A pyromaniac starts torching warehouses for thrills, resulting in the death of one of the fireman's closest friends. The ex-fireman comes out of retirement in anger to try to help the fire department catch the pyro and avenge the death of his friend.

He acts well, though, and I love him in just about everything else I saw him in.

it took about five tries to get through it without falling asleep

it should've been 45 minutes long with all the characters nude the entire time and a lot bloodier

One of my favorite actors. Do you remember his role in The Big Lebowski? Hilarious!

Naked very deliberately opens with a rape scene, so that you'd be under no illusion about who this guy is and no temptation to sympathize with him.

Once we get that out of the way, what we have is the best character ever. This film is a must for all Fallheads, because it seems parts of him were modelled on MES: a highly articulate working class Mancunian mad lad, conspiracy theorist and prophet of rage... TBH the younger me had some sympathy for his arrogant and caustic sides, definitely big themes throughout my 20s. But yeah he's obviously sociopathic, which I never was.

I saw the Australian horror movie Razorback from 1984.



The movie is roughly about a giant wild boar terrorizing a small community in the Australian outback. That may sound kinda dull, but it's quite stylish and entertaining. The movie's great on visuals and got crazy characters and a setting that reminds me slightly of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Mad Max. It's not at all what I expected.

At times it's a little stupid like you might expect from an 80s horror and the monster is a little.. let's say stiff. Still an en entertaining film that feels somewhat unique.

Saw Evil Dead Rise at the cinema with a couple of buddies whom I used to watch the original Evil Dead with back when we were teenagers.

Evil Dead Rise reminds me, in tone, of the 2013 remake. Most of the humor from later in the franchise is gone and they've really upped the level of violence.

I quite liked Evil Dead Rise! It's sinister, it's creative in places and placing a small family with kids at the center of this story gives it some heart and makes you feel just a little more invested.

The story this time takes place in an apartment complex. I do miss the creepiness of the cabin, but on the other hand, the cast in EDR plays very well. Especially Alyssa Sutherland who plays the mom is wonderful and creepy as a deadite.

I think I already stated that Evil Dead is the only notable horror franchise that actually stays consistently good. EDR confirms and cements that.

Saw Syk Pike which means Sick Girl, although its English/international title is Sick of Myself.



It's a Norwegian body horror comedy / social satire about awful, vapid people and the extreme lengths they go to for attention. In terms of themes and direction, it kinda feels like Ruben Östlund (The Square, Force Majeure, Triangle of Sadness) meets David Cronenberg.

Although the comedy is low key and not in your face (as is often the case in Scandinavian cinema), I found it very funny and entertaining 🙂 I also love body horror, so it ticked off many right boxes for me.

Well done by director Kristoffer Borgli and cast!

level of gore: very high A plus
quality of the kills: creative and brutal A plus

weaknesses: same setting and lighting throughout became tedious

i did not become invested in the characters

writing was poor

whenever someone wasn't being killed or brutalized i was checking my watch

over all c minus

it's really the cheap dark lighting and monotonous set that killed it

also side point: i hate letting the kid live

just kill the fucking kid - that's the real money shot

I like the first two Texas Chainsaw Massacres, but the third and fourth are a samey blur to me. The most memorable thing about them is the cast (Matthew McConaughey, Viggo Mortensen, Renee Zellwegger).

I've seen all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies and they're often funny and entertaining even if they're not great.

Friday the 13th and Halloween are kinda boring.

I really like the first two Hellraiser movies and the new one from last year was also entertaining.

However, no other franchise can match the awesomess that is Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, Army of Darkness and Ash vs. Evil Dead (the TV series). The remake and this latest aren't quite as great as the original material that inspired them, but they sure beat Hellraiser 3 or Nightmare on Elm Street 2 or The Conjuring 3. 🙂
