Latitude Zero (1969)

A Japanese sci-fi/fantasy flick with futuristic submarines, heroes and villains. I found a bootleg DVD of this one for $6 (USD) and took a chance and bought it. Turned out to be top-notch quality video and audio. This movie is different from most Japanese sci-fi/fantasy films that I've seen, because the dialog was originally recorded in English and most of the cast were American actors. It reminded me of some of the 60's TV shows by Irwin Allen like 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' and 'Lost in Space.' Sort of like a cross between those two made into a full-length film. The special effects ranged between very good to goofy but even the ridiculous effects didn't make the story any less entertaining.

Tillsammans 99, a sequel to a Swedish movie, Tillsammans, that came out around the turn of the century that I saw a couple of times.

The old movie was about a Swedish commune in 1975. In this sequel, It's 1999, so the characters have aged appropriately.

It's a subtle comedy about weird, flawed people getting together and being awkward. It got more chuckles than laughs, but I liked it.

It's been a while, but I think I preferred the first Tilsammans, but it's still a welcome sequel.

White Pongo (1945)

Low-budget adventure flick about a group of explorers and scientists looking for an elusive albino gorilla, which they believe to be the "missing link" between man and ape. Part of the way into the jungle trek, several of the explorers stage a mutiny so they can look for a large gold deposit. There's also a love story which develops during the ordeal which also features men in ape suits occasionally running amok.

Another low-budget flick about a jungle and a gorilla. This one is a story of a jungle plantation foreman who commits a crime of passion in a moment of jealous rage. An old native woman who lives on the plantation, witnesses his evil deed and puts a curse on him followed with daily doses of poison which turns him into an ape-like creature each evening when night falls.

I guess it was much easier and cheaper just to have someone put on a gorilla costume than to bother with the werewolf makeup.

This has to be the worst movie I've seen in the cinema. I only went along to see this because my girl's a Marvel Comics geek, but it's 2 hours of your life wasted.
I have no idea what this movie is meant to be. It's complete mess with a plot that makes no sense. Something to do with déjà vu and spiders.
Dakota Johnson looks alright though.

I think it's time to put the superhero movies to rest. I assume many have had their fill by now. I want more intelligent horror.. and bring back fantasy!

I went to see this on VDay by myself. I didn't want to torture anyone else with watching it. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but I WAS expecting Morbius levels of bad. I feel like at the very least I laughed more during Morbius. This movie not so much. They also did this weird thing where the movie's time line was based off of early 00s. They snuck in a song that was played during the 2004 Catwoman movie with Halle Berry. I was like how fitting that they used that same song for the same level of suck. Even though I defend that Catwoman like crazy because I enjoyed it and well Halle Berry. Dakota Johnson is too milquetoast for me to care about her being the lead. She's not that attractive to me. Just another plain jane. When people see this movie and say things like Super Hero movies are done and they need to stop making them and MCU fare. They forget that THIS type of movie was the norm before MCU brought the high level of cinema that has come out.

Sony just needs to give up the Spiderman movies to Marvel fully and let them handle it.

This movie was basically Final Destination mixed with superheroes NOT super heroing lol. I wish they would have let the girls fight in their suits. Maybe they could have done a flash forward and you get to see how they interact in the future. Instead, they just showed them posing next to Madame Web near the end and we are supposed to be happy/satisfied with that. I wanted to go in and disagree with all the critics, but this one was a hard watch. I even fell asleep during the final act. Parts being tired but also part being bored.

I agree with Fantasy deserving a big push but there ARE intelligent horror movies coming out thanks to A24. We just need more of it from different production studios. MonkeyPaw has been doing well also.

While there were some superhero movies that could have potentially gone there, it ultimately always devolved into overwrought drama, flashy but boring fight scenes and lame meta-references.

Kick Ass, Logan, Watchmen, The Unbreakable series so that includes Split and Glass.

I'm talking explicitly about exploring mind-blowing, complex concepts and taking them unexpected, philosophical places. Maybe Watchmen come close, with the whole Dr. Manhattan thing.
