Didn't love it. It was fine.

wow really? I watched it twice because I was into it.

I was this cool the whole time.

God damnit. I saw Kite from 1998.

I saw it recommended as a gory thriller about child assassins. The protagonist is an emotionally dead/scarred teenage girl. I won't get into the specifics, but what wasn't advertised is that OF COURSE it (also) contains a lot of sexual violence, this time committed against a minor. Gods damnit.

As stated, I'm not a prude and I think it's interesting that anime can depict / visualize stories that would be difficult or too extreme in a live action movie. But why do they have to make it look like girls/women like being raped? The effect it has on the character is traumatic. Depicting it as such would help drive the drama. So why the red faced moaning and general lack of resistance - in every scene?

This isn't a complete schlock movie either. Supposedly, it's set for a live action remake that has Samuel L. Jackson attached to it.

It's my own fault for getting the uncut version, I guess, as some of these scenes (or all of them?) were cut from other releases.

Either way, it's a movie about the hard lives of a couple of teenage assassins; the abuse and control inflicted on them and their struggle to break free from their oppressors.

Despite being gritty and occasionally exciting, it wasn't quite to my liking. I understand how it might appeal to many, though. It was still decent (disregarding the rape scenes).

So I feel like their culture is sexually repressed and some creatives express their weird desires through their art since they wouldn't do that irl.

Also rape is weird and your body that make it seem like you are enjoying it but it is still traumatizing. So if anything this depiction is more realistic than how it happens in other movies.

I was this cool the whole time.

^Being repressed probably has a lot to do with it. It's still awful. And I understand what you mean about your body betraying you etc, but if these scenes were realistic, I really don't think that would come into play in any of the rape scenes I've seen so far. At least not the ones where the victims were human.

Anyways, me and my wife watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3 together.

Appropriately, it took us three evenings to get through it cause she's a couch sleeper, but I was pleasantly surprised. Especially after the very dull Antman quantumverse thing, this was surprisingly entertaining and even a little heart warming in places.

It won't stay with me, but it's the best popcorn/pure entertainment flick I've seen in a while.

What more can you ask for from Marvel? That whole universe is so filled with random shit, I can't figure it out. New York seems to have hundreds of active superheroes and villains. You got a multiverse with alternate realities. Time cops. A galaxy full of aliens and gods and whatnot. A quantumverse?

It's too much, but it's fun when it kinda gels.

I also saw Martyrs from 2008 the other day.

I'd seen some of it before, but never the whole movie. It has a legendary status, so I thought I'd revisit it.

It's probably the most significant movie from the wave of ultra violent french movies to come out in the 2000s with Irreversible, Inside and High Tension being other examples.

On the surface level, the story is about a victim of abuse who enacts a gruesome revenge on some of her abusers.. but about halfway, the movie changes tone and focus a little and explores some deeper themes.

It all ties in with torture and suffering, so the movie is not for the squeamish. I find torture porn (which the latter half of this is) vaguely distasteful, but the ending and payoff was decent.

Also, I enjoyed that it made me think of Hellraiser 2 Hellbound.

I love that movie and all the revenge type of gory movies that came out after the wave of Asian movies did. Oldboy, I Saw The Devil, Mother, etc.

The genre (?) is not a particular love for me, but I did like Oldboy and I Saw the Devil (despite some goofiness in the latter). I haven't seen Mother, though.

High Tension was so intense to my little mind when it came out lmao. Another great horror film from that era (although not French I don't think) was The Descent.

The original Oldboy was phenomenal, haven't bothered with the remake.

Molecules from MB really got me into classic Korean horror around 2008-2010, and it certainly was formative in my taste in film to this day.

Highly recommend Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and The Quiet Family (1998). Not especially gory films, but in the same league narratively I'd say.

I got A Tale of Two Sisters on my to-do list, so might watch that tomorrow 🙂

Yeah, I didn't bother with the remake of Oldboy either. Didn't feel like it was necessary or worthwhile to watch.

13 Cameras.

I don't remember where I saw someone mention this movie but it was either on Instagram or on Threads. I decided to watch it for myself to see what it was about.  Well it's about a creepy guy that just likes to watch people on cameras. He sets up 13 surveillance cameras and rents his house out to a pregnant couple. Shenanigans ensue. I can't believe they ended up making a sequel when the first one was so bad. It almost felt like a student film tbh. There are some plot twists near the end but like meh you end up not really caring by the time they are revealed.

I don't know why I'm torturing myself this way but I'm going to also watch 14 cameras. The only thing that really carries over from the first one is that it is the same creepy guy but the location has changed.

Haha, it is interesting. I also like to torture myself with bad movies every now and then. I still don't think I have @Mrs. Waffles 's constitution.

I guess it makes for interesting experiences in that they're a nice break from formula or monotony 🤔

Oh I'm Mrs. Waffles levels of bad when it comes to watching bad movies. My faves are bad b horror movies. They are so funny to laugh at. I just love movies so much I will watch pretty much anything once to give it a chance even some slower dramas which isn't my normal wheelhouse.

I was this cool the whole time.

I honestly would go so far as to say I get more enjoyment out of roasting bad movies than watching actual good movies these days. Especially movies meant to be moving or poignant or make you think deeply. Not to say that I don't like deep poignant thoughts, but narrative fiction is not my preferred way of absorbing that stuff.

But that's not always the case; I've enjoyed some "serious" and legitimately good movies, a lot of them being ones Mr. Waffles made me watch that I didn't think looked up my alley and would never have given a chance on my own. Sometimes I'll be doing something in the room while he starts up a movie and it'll just grab my attention and I'll ask to sit down and watch it with him.

My favorite bad movies are generally failed comedies, low budget kids schlock, and self-important crap made by people who think they're genius auteurs.

What's the last bad movie you watched?
