It definitely felt that way from my perspective as well as Mrs. Waffles's.

She explained why it felt that way to hear and went into like doubting that maybe she read too much into it. At this point it's just gaslighting. It someone feels a certain way about something then let them feel it.

If you don't see how it's hostile then okay that's fine.

I was this cool the whole time.

So I'm being hostile AND gaslighting. Fuck me.

Speaking only for myself, the phrasings that gave me the impression I got that put me on edge were as follows. I understand if none of this was your intention, it's just how it came off to me, and I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't think you are an asshole at all, for the record.
QuoteIn what way do you possibly interpret a Greta Gerwig film as only having a shallow or surface-level feminist message?
Your phrasing just came off as so incredulous at my interpretation on the film that I felt like you were saying it was inconceivable that my opinion could be valid, like this is all just opinions, as you said yourself. It felts to me that you were citing the director's name to say that she has credibility as a feminist director and back up the idea that it's crazy to ever have a criticism like mine.

QuoteAnd isn't being a trans kind of an exemption from traditional gender roles at large or...?
This just came off as you making an assumption about what the lived experience of trans people, or even just me, entails. Like I said, I think if you want to talk about the relationship between my trans identity and gender roles, I'd love to do that as I find it an interesting subject. But it came off here like you were trying to discredit what I said about my own relationship with gender roles, I didn't read it as a question that seemed to be asked out of genuine curiosity.

QuoteI feel like you missed the point and just judged it as inherently a chick flick.
This felt to me like you were jumping to conclusions about my interpretation of the film and making assumptions about my method of judging it. Saying you thought I missed the point when my review was mostly very positive and in agreement with the feminist message just felt like you were singling out the one vaguely negative thing I said and using that to say I misinterpreted the whole movie and just dismissed it as a chick flick.

So yeah, that's just how I interpreted your phrasing in that moment. Once again, I do not think you were malicious or attacking me or an asshole or any of that. I think we just got off on the wrong foot, and I want to meet in the middle and try to better understand this so we can communicate in a more productive way in the future.

"stressed" is just "desserts" spelled backwards

The only thing I would change is that obviously (I hope) the phrase "a trans" was a typo.

I'm not responsible for how I'm interpreted. Or anyone's feelings. I say what I mean and I stand by what I say. I presume others operate the same way.

Being offended on someone else's behalf is both hilarious and outdated.

I haven't read much of the arguments here about it, but I just saw Barbie a few hours ago and I thought it was pretty good. Amazing production design, plenty of laugh out loud parts, and some moments of poignancy. I think I laughed hardest at the voiceover about casting Margo Robbie, but 90% of the theater seemed think the comment the BCC Pride and Prejudice was the big side-splitter.

This is what you want. This is what you get.

Understood. You have stated your stance pretty definitively and I don't want to dwell on this anymore so I'm not going to say anything more on the subject. :)

I'm not offended on anyone's behalf. It's called empathy but I'm going to drop it and not go back and forth with you. You both explained yourselves and it's over now.

Because you deemed it so? Ok.

You came at me saying I was being hostile and then back pedaled when I was called out on it. You've yet to show me where either instance occurred, you just said it was how you read it. But sure go ahead and dismiss me now.

I loved that voiceover bit too! Lots of great gags, makes me want to rewatch it just to be able to catch everything better. The bit about the Snyder cut really got a snort out of Mr. Waffles, as did Ken's favorite song being Push by Matchbox 20, haha.

Yeah I liked when Lizzo's song got cut short the second time around and she was complaining about it.

While looking for new experiences in the movie realm, I thought why not check out some horror anime? In my youth, I did see Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll and Akira. But besides those, I've mostly just seen Ghibli movies when it comes to anime and nothing in the realm of horror. So I landed on a few movies to check out.

The first pick was this, Legend of the Overfiend from 1987.

And I'll just admit right up top I was not prepared for it.

It's a story about an entity called the Overfiend which wakes up every 3000 years to wreak havoc, not just on the human world but also on the demon world and the beast world (populated by superhuman beast people). It's like King Kong on steroids and mixed with lots of demons and gory imagery. The demon of destruction looks like a huge Satan figure towering over the city of Osaka. Pretty cool, actually.

What I wasn't quite prepared for was all the god danged tentacle porn. Yes. So much tentacle porn. I'd read that it had some cultural impact, but I didn't realize it was in pioneering this sort of ridiculousness.

It seems every demon in this movie just wants to rape a woman - or two or three - to the point where the woman's body is maybe shredded apart by the resulting cumshot. Actually, every male character in this movie, save for one, does this. The level of misogyny is kinda astonishing. That a sexual fantasy would be so based around rape is rather disturbing.

And not only that, but sex and sexual organs is just everywhere. The demon of destruction sprouts multiple huge dick tentacles that absorb innocent people. It's not that they get eaten by the dick tip, but just coming in contact with the dick skin kinda absorbs them. The rapey demons always sprout multiple tentacles, so there's like 8 of them going into a butthole at some point. And then the female character afterwards wonders if it was all a dream. What, she can't feel that she got bumrushed by a bucket of eels?

So it's a bit like The Room in that you think: Oh gods, not another sex scene. Just get on with it!!

Towards the end, it's a bit like in Ghostbusters 2 when the ghosts take over Manhattan. Only if the ghosts were raping and murdering everyone.

Watching it made me feel dirtier than watching NEKROmantic 1 and 2. How does this get made? An animation studio sat down and drew all these rape scenes by hand? It boggles the mind. But besides all that junk, there's actually something to like here. The imagery, especially the demon of destruction, is pretty gnarly and the creatures and the violence is a lot of fun.

Overall rating (based on how much it entertained me): :3stars:

What can I say? It was a novel experience.

Happiness is a warm manatee

And then I watched Sunset Boulevard from 1950 which has been on my todo-list for years:

Such a great movie! It was cohesive, entertaining and the dialogue (including narration) was witty and smart in that cool way that these old movies (or at least the good ones) often are. Also, the movie manages to be very atmospheric, whether it's depicting a party or a derelict Hollywood mansion.

I won't give away too much of the plot and I figure you probably know it anyways. Let's just say it's a story about Hollywood (with a bit of critique) which involves an older movie star who refuses to face reality that her stardom has faded. William Holden is very charming as the lead character, a script writer down on his luck. Gloria Swanson was great as the faded movie star. It would feel wrong not to also mention a wonderful performance by Nancy Olson who plays the young, aspiring screen writer Betty Schaefer.

All in all it's an entertaining movie, well acted and well made, that comes to a satisfying conclusion. My rating:

Jaws (1975)

I watched this for the first time yesterday. I don't tend to watch old films unless I have seen them when I was younger because I usually don't think they age well.

I can say I really enjoyed it and I had really low expectations of it tbh. I was surprised at how good the actors and actresses were, I was surprised that I actually jumped a few times. I was expecting everything to look really fake and terrible but I was in awe at how well everything was done for a film of its age.

^I only saw Jaws once and that was years ago, like before there was Wikipedia. But I remember having similar feelings about it. My first impression is basically: Sharks.. Without David Attenborough narrating, how interesting could it be? But then it's actually very good.

About films becoming outdated or not, I think the mark of a true classic is it has staying power across the ages 🙂 though there certainly are some fading stars among them.

Jaws is my favorite movie of all time. It's absolutely perfect.

Also the only film that's inspired me to monologue lol
Patched together because it was originally posted as a series of instagram stories
