Title: Anyone up for a game of chess?
Post by: Guybrush on Jan 10, 2023, 11:40 AM
I'm not a good chess player, but I do have an account on lichess and also on chess.com I believe.

I play against human opponents maybe once a year, so I'm out of practice, but I thought it might be fun to do so more.

So.. anyone up for a match?

Cool! Where are we playing? I think I'm toretorden on both lichess and chess.com :)

And ofc I wouldn't cheat. My plan is to lose.. and then winning becomes more of a somewhat pleasant surprise :D

Years ago, I occasionally just did quick games against the computer and then I think lichess was just a slightly quicker and nicer experience overall. Chess.com feels a bit older? But there's not really much difference from what I can tell.

My fried brain can only handle one game at a time.
Let's do this like bar pool.
Winner plays the next challenger in line.

Put your quarters on the rail!

gotta be 15/10 timed games - i don't like these crazy slow games or waiting all day

I'll invite you for a game when the current round's done :)

Me and Chula's game is interesting. Perhaps we can share it and talk/post about some moves when we're done.

Btw if I'm sitting down and playing a game from start to finish, I also prefer 10 minute games.

I still like the casualness of this correspondence chess, though.

Pretty hard to do with the internet and members in different time zones.

i already don't like my position in our game GB.
Time to get a bit reckless.

i think with very commonly played games like 15/10 they start you at 800 and with less played games the start you at 1500. It doesn't get ironed out until after several games.

I'm low 1200s in rapid but I don't play very often in that time setting these days. It's mostly been slower daily games (usually 1 at a time) for the last year or so if at all, and I'm starting to approach 1500 in daily rating.
I'm terrible at blitz, not to mention bullet so I've never been over 1000 in either of those

Here's our game:

Check out this #chess game: donbelanger vs toretorden - https://www.chess.com/daily/game/463743651

My game in the end was basically going for an attack / check on the pawn at A3 and/or the pawn at h4 to get my own h7 across.

I got some play out of most of my pieces here, so this was s good match for me (imo) even if the computer analysis says I made some mistakes.

My game with Gd isn't looking nearly ss good. I didn't wanna play the same position, so ended up doing something weird instead

Sorry OH, the game opened in browser when I clicked your link and when you took my queen I was just looking for the give-up button and somehow backed ny browser out of the game. Now I can't find my way back in?

Don't wait out the 11 minutes or so - I give up :) will try to find out how and perhaps so we can post the game.

Note to self: play in app, not in browser on phone.

Edit:

PS, chess.com sucks a bit. How about some lichess.org?

Anyways, I sucked and will want a rematch at some point.

Being a little more self-analytical, patience is probably my biggest weakness in chess combined with the fact I'm not good enough to play blitz games without making blunders.

If there's no time control, I've noticed I play like it's blitz while my opponent may be playing classical.

15 plus 10 seconds a move is the only game i like - it can still take 45 minutes to an hour

i don't like navigating away and then studying the board - also if it's too long my brain just starts looping - i think i see something and then i see why it won't work then five minutes later i'll think it's a new idea and then remember that i already considered it repeat repeat - the 15/10 game keeps me focused - the only times i've lost on time was when i fell asleep

lichness has a much better 960 game but people who like that game tend to be really good chess players so i always lose

it was weird and disturbing

i felt like bird were attacking

it took him so long to checkmate me that i thought i might get a draw through the 50 move rule

my elo fell back below 700

i lost some games trying to experiment with new ideas but others just lost

i mean i'm so bad that it makes me feel like i'm retarded (not in the slur sense)

it makes me think is this the same lack of proficiency i'm going through all my life with just below average at everything

besides my degree and certain test scores i've really accomplished nothing that requires intelligence

i guess at chess i'm just repeating the same mistakes again and again but i don't know

i even review my losses and see where i messed up

i reached 850 and then i just started playing like i played two years ago

i know it's just a game but you know it does mean something

i don't know how legit the bots are but i beat bots that are 1200 - 1500

but real people fmu

my ability to play chess is directly linked to how good i feel

if i'm distracted by anxiety or depression or even life like my car needs new brake pads my game suffers

i know i'm flooding this thread but whatever

i feel like there's a lot to learn about life from chess

like another besides making bad decisions when i'm distracted that applies to real life is ignoring encroaching trouble

like i've had games where i just didn't want to react to my opponent and lost

it's like procrastinating to the point of disaster and not seeing what i don't want to see

like waiting too long to change your oil or not exercising
