The Something Completely Different Film Club

Hey guys! I thought it might be fun to make a film club and discuss some movies together. My suggestion would be to do it in a bi-weekly way like this:

  • Week 1 - We announce the movie to watch. Exactly how to get a hold of it is a challenge you likely have to solve on your own.
  • Week 1 - We also make suggestions for the next movie to watch in this thread
  • Week 2 - We make a thread to discuss last movie watched
  • Week 2 - We also vote over last week's suggestions for what to watch next

So, we do the suggesting, polling etc. in here in here and then we do discussions for each movie in its own thread.

I currently only want some very simple rules which are: if you want in, you announce it and I'll maintain a list of members here (probably make a forum membergroup too). Each member gets to suggest one movie per poll and only suggestions that come from members will be voted over.

So, anyone up for it? If yes, I think we can jumpstart week 1 already and start suggesting some movies :)

I tried several times to do this but got no interest, so sure, I'm in.
I should note some genres/film styles I would not watch.
Gory horror
Pyschlogical horror
Teen comedy
Really weird and hard to understand arty stuff (David Lynch style of thing)

Other than that, pretty much ok with most things and happy to sign up.

Like all clubs though, we'd need people reasonably dedicated to it. Exo says he's not interested coming here, but he's such a big movie fan I wonder if he might "guest" on the club maybe? Worth a shot?

What? To me, weird movies are what movie clubs are about  I think we just have to poll it out and then you can be excused if the pick falls into an unfavorable category.

About Exo and other dedicated movie buffs who did not make the jump, maybe we could just briefly announce the film club in our thread on MB. Exo made posts there, I think, so should be subscribed.

Ah yeah, I'm not saying don't do them. But if I can't understand what a movie is about I'm going to find it hard to comment on or discuss it. See how it goes I guess. Maybe we could try to make it our first cross-forum collaboration, run it in both forums? Meh, might be messy. I was just thinking of those who want to participate but don't want to leave MB.

But you see, I'd rather discuss something like, maybe The Odd Couple or The Last Temptation of Christ or even Platoon rather than Joe Msizowsky Goes to the Shop for Bread and Comes Back to Find He is Living in Only One Dimension (Director's Cut with special deleted three-dimensional scenes).

I'd be down. I'll watch anything that's not about the struggles of 19th century aristocratic families.

Warm welcomes, Jans :)

Were still very few, but maybe we'll pick up some steam as we go along.

I'll be gentle in my first movie suggestion so as not to scare away potential newcomers. I nominate the following movie:

Heavenly Creatures (Peter Jackson, 1994)

Before Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson is perhaps most known for his gory horror comedies Bad Taste and Braindead (aka Dead Alive). However, he is a diverse film maker and also made movies like the mockumentary Forgotten Silver, the very adult Muppets parody Meet the Feebles and the PG fantasy horror movie Frighteners starring Michael J. Fox.

A little more obscure perhaps is the movie Heavenly Creatures, a drama based on a true crime story about the intense friendship between two girls Pauline and Juliet, their shared fantasy world Borovnia, and the dire consequences when their friendship becomes threatened.

The movie is Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey's first feature film and was generally well received by critics upon its release. It was also nominated for an Oscar for best screenplay.

I've seen this once before, but it's many many years ago and I've been wanting to rewatch it for a long time. I believe it is available on Netflix.

Any other suggestions?

I'm in the same boat with Heavenly Creatures. I've seen it and liked it, but that was many years ago so I'd be up for a re-watch.

I haven't seen it, but Karen used to love it. Then she had one of her traditional changes of heart and said she no longer wanted to watch it again. I guess I'd be okay with watching it. I'd also suggest

(Don't read the whole thing as it will spoil it if you have not already seen it)

I think this burgeoning little club of ours could DEFINITELY need someone who likes to get high and watch Meet the Feebles. What do you say? :)

@Trollheart I fell asleep to Memento once so wouldn't mind watching that again, but might be even more interested in Identity as I've never heard of it before.

We should also figure out how many suggestions to accept per person to avoid getting swamped one this thing really takes off. For now, let's follow Troll's example and suggest two movies each?

By the way, I made a membergroup for the film club with its own snazzy popcorn icon. I'll admit I did it as much out of curiosity / checking out functionality as anything else.

BUT That means you can rock your own popcorn icon if you want to try it out.

If so, do like this:

  • Click your little avatar icon on top of the page
  • Click Account Settings from the menu
  • Set SCD Film Club as your primary group

PS: Only available to film club members

I would love to join!

My only worry is staying consistent; I'm not sure what I would do about movies that aren't on Netflix or free streaming, it's not within our budget to pay for another streaming service.

But I'll participate when I am able, so sign me up!

Next week will be polling time. Any other suggestions for things to see?

Following Troll's example suggesting two movies, I'd like to suggest Wild At Heart because it's one of two Lynch films I've not yet seen (the other one being The Straight Story).

I remember a certain person here doesn't like Lynch but I'm assuming that's because of the unintelligibleness (??) of movies like Mulholland Dr. or Lost Highway with actors swapping characters and dopplegangers and whatnot. My impression is that Wild at Heart is more cohesive (more like Blue Velvet perhaps?) and is a love story between two young people played by Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern. I also think there might be really bad people after them, but I'm not too eager to spoil myself in any case.

I'll make a thread :)

Next week will be polling week, but I forgot to ask for suggestions.

Which movies would you like to watch? Give me your one or two suggestions :)

Here's one from me (sorry Trolls):

Mad God (2022)

Stop motion animator Phil Tippett worked on this as a side-project for something like 30 years. It seems like it might be inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, bringing the viewer on a trip through hell for a look on that grotesque fantasy world, its inhabitants and the tortures inflicted on them.

Sounds good to me

I'll make another suggestion later on. I figure we can collect suggestions and then run a poll from Thursday.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club
Post by: Guybrush on Feb 21, 2023, 08:24 AM
There was only my one suggestion, so that means.... Mad God is this week's assignment!

I'll also take your suggestions, although I do suggest we keep it down to one suggestion each for next week. At least for now.

My suggestion for next week's poll will be..

Midnight Run is a crime action/comedy movie from the 80s featuring Bob DeNiro in the lead role. I've bever seen it, but it is supposedly a lot of fun, so.. it's been on my to-do list for quite a while now.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club

Midnight Run is up!

I'll take suggestions for next movie as well 🙂

Post by: Guybrush on Mar 09, 2023, 11:45 PM
I'm not quite sure whether or not I can actually get a hold of it, but I would like to suggest Chairman of the Board as our next movie. @Mrs. Waffles gave it a glowing review as her favourite bad movie. Sounds good to me.

Everybody of course loves prop comedian Carrot Top. He stars in this 90s comedy where I'm just going to assume he takes over a company for some reason and probably runs it to the ground. Or more likely, it all turns out fine and there's some wishy washy moral twist at the end? I don't actually know what it's about, but I'm willing to find out. ;D
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club

Hahaha, yes! One of the most obnoxious films I've ever seen and I love every minute of it. I would love to hear SCD's thoughts on it.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club
Post by: Janszoon on Mar 10, 2023, 02:27 AM
I don't know if I can commit to watching that movie.  I'll say this though: I saw Carrot Top live in 1994, thought he would suck, and was pleasantly surprised by how funny he was.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club
Post by: Guybrush on Mar 13, 2023, 10:27 AM
I don't know.. Carrot Top has always seemed cringe to me, especially when he got weirdly buff and all that. But I've never watched his standup and I guess it makes sense he'd be good at it. He is famous after all.

As a side note, so many famous comedians had some very defined schtick or physicality back in the 80s and into the 90s. I'm thinking of the likes of Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Goldthwait, Gilbert Gottfried, Pauly Shore and Jim Carrey.

Anyways, this week is polling week. If you'd like to suggest another movie, feel free to do so before.. say, thursday? :)

Sorry guys! I'm a week late with this announcement, but...

I'll also take suggestions on next movie.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club

Hoops, this is polling week and I haven't even made a suggestion.

In the hopes of getting some more eyes and ears on this beautiful, extravagant piece of art, I'd like to suggest Forbidden Zone.

Yes, yes, you're probably tired of my raving about it. But really, watching it is an experience and let's face it. It's probably healthy too.

The movie was made by Richard Elfman, brother of Danny Elfman, who just went and made a movie without knowing much about anything about how to get that done. It apparently cost him his house, but what is a house compared to the genius that is Forbidden Zone? The ultimate cult movie, it is funny, controversial, crazy and made with passion and vision. Everyone who likes weird things should watch it at least once.

Edit:

It should come with a disclaimer warning that it contains some extremely outdated and offensive jokes.

Of course I know The Changeling from before and I absolutely LOVE it. I've seen it many times 🙂

I also think it would be a great movie for the film club and wouldn't mind rewatching as it's been a few years now.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club

I gave Forbidden Zone a shot. Went in kind of blind not knowing what to expect. It felt like a fever dream, but I guess that was the intention. It also felt like I was watching something from the late-night hours of Adult Swim. I can tell Adult Swim creators definitely took inspiration from this movie. I swore I was watching like Tim and Eric Awesome show at one point. My wife got sucked into it 10 minutes in and she's game to watch it again because of how absurd it is. I'm surprised honestly because she doesn't like musicals and there were a number of scenes where they broke out into song.

I'm going to watch The Changeling either this weekend or Monday night and report back.

Haha, it only gets better with subsequent viewings 😄 and it probably helps that I like all the old timey jazz they stole as well.

Unless we get more suggestions, I think we'll just announce The Changeling as next week's movie to watch.
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club
Post by: Guybrush on May 22, 2023, 11:27 PM
Film clubbers!

Movie of the week is The Changeling from 1980.

The movie was directed by Peter Medak and stars George C. Scott as a widower who rents an old mansion with a sordid past.

The movie is rightly considered a CLASSIC in the haunted house genre, being both creepy and presenting the viewer with a compelling mystery and fine performances.

You are encouraged to watch it at your leisure and I'll create a thread for discussing it 🙂

I'll also take suggestions for the next movie if you have!
Title: Re: The SCD Film Club
Post by: Guybrush on May 31, 2023, 12:29 AM
I thought I'd suggest Welcome to the Dollhouse from 1995 as the next movie.

(https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/ef9042727147d0ea19250207c9aedce4c18b0cce/40_47_1974_2920/master/1974.jpg?width=700&quality=85&auto=format&fit=max&s=036ce96db20c211ef90ffe25de2dc6f1)

This is the movie that launched the career of director Todd Solondz.

I've not seen it, but I have seen his movie Happiness a couple of times and I like that a lot. He seems like a filmmaker who is unafraid of controversy and with a quirky sense for that mixture of tragedy and comedy, so I'm guessing teenage angst and alienation is something he can do well.

I don't know what this is about other than I think it's a tragic comedy about a teenager outcast who probably have problems with love, her own family and the people at school, etc.. Who knows 🤷

Critics and audiences seem to like it.

Interesting.

When I saw the title of this I thought it was similar to that Jessica Alba tv series that came out Dollhouse like maybe this was the source material that lead them to making the tv show but maybe it's not.

I'd like to suggest two modern Westerns. I know one is a remake but I loved it. I'm in the mood to watch westerns made after 2000.

The Harder They Fall(2021) and 310 to Yuma(2007).

I also watched True Grit today too.

Post by: Guybrush on Jun 05, 2023, 05:56 PM
Hey guys :)

I just set the poll up in this thread. Hope that's fine. You'll find it at the top of the page!

Here are the contestants:

  • 3:10 to Yuma (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381849) (2007)
  • The Harder They Fall (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10696784) (2021)
  • The Unforgiven (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105695) (1992)

Poll will run until sunday.

I've withdrawn my vote / suggestion for Welcome to the Dollhouse. The reason is I've already seen it (couldn't wait) and so I won't vote for it. However, it IS great and I will recommend it and I wrote a small review in the latest movies thread.

I'd like to get this back up and running if anyone is interested.

I'm going to reset the poll and we have til 9/29 to decide on the modern day Western to watch.

After that it is Spooky season so each week we will vote on a different horror movie to watch. I will break it down into the categories of different horror elements IE: Slashers, Hauntings, Demonic Possessions, Found Footage. These are just examples I haven't decided which four I will actually use yet.

I'm also super looking forward to spooky season as I'm a horror buff at heart 🎃
