And that is indeed a killer track. Still hits hard over 30 years later.
The City Sleeps is also dope. For a long time I thought the artist's name was pronounced "MC 900 feat. Jesus", as if Jesus was a featured artist, haha.

Funny story, I actually thought of that song in particular because they play it occasionally on my workplace radio, and they did today so it was fresh in my mind, haha.

Yeah, strangely I'd definitely heard that Dua Lipa song before this year, I listened to that whole album when it came out, but somehow with all the other orchestration in that song it didn't really register that she sampled it.
It's a cool little incorporation of that riff though, yeah.

That was big when I was a delivery driver so I heard it a lot on the radio. It's good song. It always cracked me up that that riff is basically the Darth Vader theme.

Love the Chemical Bros, and that whole wave of 90s electronica and big beat in general. The Prodigy, The Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, Moby, Mr. Oizo, a lot of that stuff still bangs despite most of it being extremely 90s.
I still remember my mom walking into my room circa 2000 and seeing my Napstered MP3 of The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" on my screen. She was absolutely mortified, haha.

I discovered a couple of those retroactively in the mid-late 2000s, but I was actually a huge internet junkie in the 90s/00s and an early adopter of Napster, so yeah I actually did have a bit of exposure to some of that stuff through the dumb luck of browsing the janky early web. Our family got off dialup in 2001 as well, which drastically increased the rate of discovery of music.
It was kind of a crapshoot, but I did get exposure to a lot of crazy stuff, that's one reason my tastes were always really all over the place, even to this day really. I didn't really think in terms of genres or aesthetics back then. 11 year old me just thought the line "smack my bitch up" was so edgy and cool, and the song just bangs regardless of genre.
Unrestricted internet access is a hell of a drug when you're a kid, haha.

I definitely remember The Prodigy at least being pretty well known here, yeah. Though looking back I think I was probably the odd one out knowing them in my 6th grade class when most people were listening to Nsync or Eminem or Limp Bizkit, depending on what kind of kid you were, on a scale of increasing edginess I guess, haha.
Though thinking a bit more about it I actually think I might be getting my chronology messed up, I don't think I got into The Prodigy specifically until around 2002-03. I remember listening to them in middle school which was 2000-2003 for me. I do have a pretty good memory generally, but it's starting to become so long ago now that my mental wires get crossed sometimes.
Going back to the early 90s, Extreme's "More Than Words" came out at the end of 8th grade for me and was inescapable. It felt like it was played more than once per school dance, and when I went to an academic camp in the summer between 8th grad and freshman year, I swear it was played at every event we had.
It's all fun and games until the hair metal band breaks out the acoustic guitars.
From the people that brought you "Tubthumping" comes this underrated gem. I actually had this album on CD back in the late 90s, bizarrely enough. Pretty musically eclectic stuff for mainstream pop rock, the electro-disco beat mixed with rock guitars and trumpets is a cool combination IMO.
And if you aren't familiar with the band, their history is a wild trip to look into. They went from an anarchist punk band with album titles like "Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records" to being remembered as cheesy 90s one-hit wonder.

I always liked "Amnesia" (and "Tubthumping" even though it was eventually overplayed). Back when that album came out, I had a coworker who had been a fan for years before and I remember him telling all about how different their older stuff was. I've always been curious about it but I never got around to giving it a listen.

Spice Girls much bigger but All Saints had the better tunes imo.
Pure Shores was an amazing track as well. Just seen William Orbit produced it so that explains it a bit. Think he did some of Madonna's Ray of Light album, that was great too. Might even be her best album.
I remember when the Ray of Light album came out, the title track and Frozen were huge, super nostalgic for me.
I prefer 80s Madonna on the whole but for the 90s and beyond, I would agree with your assessment.

I love that song, and for me it is fairly nostalgic. There is definitely a hardcore punk influence on it. The NYC band Biohazard are actually in the video and the two groups collaborated on a hardcore/hip hop crossover track on the Judgement Night soundtrack.
Speaking of hip hop, I worked in a movie theater in high school and one night when I was cleaning one of the theaters I found the cassingle (remember those? lol) for Nine's "Whutcha Want" on the floor. I wasn't much of a hip hop fan at the time and definitely wasn't into the grittier stuff, but I ended up loving this song and it certainly played a role in me getting more interested in different kinds of hip hop.
One of the first songs and music videos I have vivid memories of as a kid. It was probably around when I started paying more attention to music.
Siobhan Fahey was supposedly wasted drunk for her part in the music video, which makes it more interesting now.
I spent the 90s ravenously consuming music, primarily by bicycling around my neighborhood, retrieving discarded tape cassettes which had been eaten by car stereos and thrown out the window into the gutters, bringing them home, re-shelling the cassettes and carefully re-spooling them, and listening to what I'd found. I spent my summers handwriting the lyrics in pencil pressing "PLAY - STOP - REWIND - PLAY - STOP - REWIND..." and in the days before the internet it was years before I could identify the artists and tracks. Many were obscure DJ remixes so that took a ton of extra work to transcribe and research. Many remixes, like Live - White, Discussion (Sam Sever Remix) and Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes (Random Carpet Mix) were worlds apart from the original album cuts.

That's a great list! A lot of of those are favorites of mine from that era (well "Dad Da Da" is technically from the 80s but it was re-popularized by that great VW ad in the 90s). I loved all three of Soul Coughing's albums and a lot Squirrel Nut Zippers output and a ton of Ween (I think I've seen them more times live than any other band). "Not an Addict" is such an underappreciated song. "Little Fluffy Clouds" seems to be less forgotten, but still a great track. And "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" is one of the best singles of the 90s imo, I wish Primitive Radio Gods had done more like it.
Some absolute classics on that list, yeah. I also like Soul Coughing and SNZ, and I love the inclusion of Hum and The Rentals, both great bands.

This is the original version with DJ Adamski from 1990, I like it better than the 1991 album version, feels more raw in that early rave era style but with that glorious hook that elevates it a lot.
The Prodigy wasn't typically music that I would go out and buy, but if it was playing in a club or if someone pulled up in a petrol station forecourt, then it would call for much head bobbing.
Probably not very well known, but Big Catholic Guilt were a pretty cool local goth/industrial type Boston band when I was in my teens. I just came across this EP while going through my old CDs tonight. It's 30 years old this year.

It's neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It's impossible for me separate "Missing" or "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal from my memories of working at that bagel place. Neither one is a song that I'd put on a list of personal favorites, but I do like the feelings of nostalgia they both give me.

Alright, now you're speaking my language! I love FSOL, Juno Reactor and of course Kraftwerk. I didn't get into electronic music aside from what I was exposed to on the radio/MTV until the early-mid 2000s, and after I dove headfirst into the world of synthesizers I gained a much deeper love and understanding of electronic music of all eras.
So many great 90s electronic artists. Some of my favorites (focusing mostly on dance artists because if I listed all the ambient stuff I'd be here all day) would be 808 State, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, The Prodigy, Moby, Orbital, The Orb, The KLF, Biosphere, The Crystal Method, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Plastikman, Hardfloor, Lords of Acid, Drexciya, Model 500, Jeff Mills, Octave One, A Guy Called Gerald, Portishead, Massive Attack, Hallucinogen, the list goes on of course.
Man, what a glorious decade for electronic music. I've got plans for tonight, but when we get home I'll add a few videos of some of my favorite 90s electronic tracks in particular.

A frigging great Britfunk tune from 1992. I think this might be my favourite instrumental from the 90s.
The composer and sax player Mike Smith, is currently the keyboardist for Gorillaz. A man of many talons, I mean talents.
Coolio is one of my perennial nostalgic faves.
Like many 90s kids, I was mesmerized by this man with the wacky hair who did the Kenan and Kel theme. "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Fantastic Voyage" were bigger hits, and understandably so, but this one was my favorite as a kid, possibly because of the ridiculous music video.
I also got to see him live many years later with a couple of my friends, a treasured moment that I treasure even more now that he's gone. RIP.

This is how I opened up 1990. It was released the October before, but definitely still 90's to me. This was on the first CD I ever owned. The first one I ever really wanted anyway.
If there's quintessential Industrial in the 90's, this fits I think.

Pretty Hate Machine is indeed an all time classic album. Definitely foreshadowed the 90s in terms of the direction of alt music. Proud to share a birth year with it.
I didn't hear that until fairly recently but I loved The Downward Spiral.

The Downward Spiral is just grittier. I feel it's where Trent really found himself. It's like, everything thereafter lost that a bit.
I think he peaked with The Fragile, and after that it was a pretty precipitous drop. The Fragile has a bit of filler, being a double album, but it has a lot of great material.
And in terms of sound design and textured multilayered arrangements, it's super unique imo. PHM has that kinda "still one foot in the 80s" sample heavy sound, Downward Spiral is more gritty hellish industrial, and then The Fragile is just these huge walls of guitars and ambient synth washes, a much more atmospheric side of NIN.
But yeah, from 89 to 99 NIN is a top 20-30 all timer act for me. Can't really go wrong with anything from that era.
Does anyone remember Wet Wet Wet? I feel like they're a band nobody talks about, but they had quite a bit of success in the late 80s and 90s from what I can remember 🤔

Love that music video. I feel like music videos in the '90s had a more distinctive style and flair to them than music videos these days. I think bands valued them a lot more because those videos might be the primary exposure they'd get to people, besides radio play, so you had to make yourself stand out from whatever else was in the MTV lineup. SP actually had a lot of great music videos too.
Admittedly, I had a big crush on D'arcy (their bass player). It's a shame she got into drugs and went off the deep end. They've done reunion tours with all their original band members except for her. And I know they've tried to get her involved, it just hasn't panned out. A shame.
