Title: Dua Lipa
Post by: jimmy jazz on Nov 01, 2023, 02:01 PM
About to drop her new single any day now.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houdini_(Dua_Lipa_song)

This is going to be the ultimate thread for the greatest popstar of our time.

Let's get physical!
Title: Re: Dua Lipa
Post by: Lexi Darling on Nov 01, 2023, 02:35 PM
You know, at first glance "greatest popstar of our time" sounds like an exaggeration, but thinking about it, I totally agree.

All my other favorite pop girlies are well past their peak (Ariana, Gaga, Demi) or make music that I find too different to really compare (Billie Eilish). There's Taylor Swift, but I can't in good conscience call her the greatest because I don't want to feed into the crazy fan cult she's acquired.

So yeah, Dua is the one right now. The snippet of the new sound sounded like it could easily lead into a total banger for the ages. Very hyped.

Post by: jimmy jazz on Nov 01, 2023, 02:57 PM
I think Ariana is great, she's got some good tunes.

Billie started out great and Bad Guy was a banger but since then, she's been shit.

Taylor is sweet, I don't know any Swifties so no danger of her fans ruining anything for me.

Olivia Rodrigo is up there I think. She's making some great stuff. Lana is too but, I wouldn't put her in the pop bracket really. She's more than that.

But Dua is still the heavyweight champ of the pop scene.
Title: Re: Dua Lipa
Post by: Lexi Darling on Nov 01, 2023, 03:43 PM
Billie's second album was really patchy yeah. I still think her first is basically all killer no filler though. And the song she did for the Barbie movie is one of her best IMO.

Olivia has some absolute winners, I still need to listen to her newest album. Vampire was great.

And I love Taylor too, but at this point she's like her own musical universe. Swifties are like juggalos, they've built up this entire mythos and lore and fan community that I think is starting to stand apart from what we traditionally think of as the pop music scene.

Houdini - November 9th

Calvin Harris has heard some of the music from her new album and described it as "incredible".

Future Nostalgia was close to being a perfect pop album. The last track really ruined it though. It really didn't fit with the rest of the album even if it was a good song.

Yeah and she keeps popping up in movies too. She's like slowly grating on me and I'm starting to turn the corner on thinking she's attractive. I'm still a little ways away but she keeps being shoved in my face.

^ Congrats, @jimmy jazz - you called it right!  And I'll have you know, my son is now in love with Dua too. What have you done to us?     Really, Dua should hire you as a promoter - or better yet, maybe her bodyguard.   ;)

PS:  I think she has a great voice, and I wish they didn't electronically *treat* it as much as they do.  Her voice holds up on its own.

Hey, she's kinda doing this shot:

So, uhm.. that's just an observation.

There is a Pro Israel rap song out that hit number one in their country and in the lyrics they are calling for the deaths of Dua Lipa, Mia Khalifa and some other celebrity.

What country is 'their country'? Israel?

I don't care who it is. They'd better pack it in because I will fire back with my own diss track. Maybe potential collab with Dua herself.

I want the next Dua single now BTW.

Post by: jimmy jazz on Jan 15, 2024, 07:29 PM
The album version doesn't have him on, he was on the remix. I haven't heard that one tbf.

The album could have been flawless if it wasn't for the last track. It's an album of pop bangers with an out of place tune at the end.

I hope she doesn't do that on this new one.

Title: Re: Dua Lipa
Post by: Lexi Darling on Jan 15, 2024, 08:13 PM
Yeah the DaBaby remix is not the original album version. Personally I think the official video should have been for the OG version, but thanks to the dedication of fans, we have this at least.

The original version, sans DaBaby, plus an edit of the music video that edits him out. I suppose you could call it a DaBortion.

Its music awards mainly for British music.

There are some categories for international artists though.

It used to be a really big thing with some iconic moments. Ginger Spice in the Union Jack dress, Oasis vs Blur. Jarvis Cocker jumping on stage when MJ was there.

These days not so much. I'll only be watching Dua's bit.

Nice. I'm interested to hear these psychedelia, trip-hop and britpop influences; I didn't hear any of that in either of the singles but Future Nostalgia was pretty sonically diverse. I suppose you could call the title track of that album psychedelic. Either way I'm looking forward to it.

Nah I've actually been mixing up Dua Lipa with Demi Lovato in my head. I was unsure why you were referring to your gf as she/her when I thought she was non-binary. Not from looks etc and I always thought she (Dua) was a bit of a fud but I just realised it's Demi Lovato that's the fud.

So I may become a fan yet.

For Big J and his dearest, here's the verdict on Dua's latest album from the news site I read most regularly:

In Norway, we always score reviews with dice and Radical Optimism gets a full score with the quote: Sets the bar for what good pop music can be.

This album reminds me a lot of the tune Groovejet - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groovejet_(If_This_Ain't_Love)

Looking at the reviews I'm gonna have to console her tonight. I dunno what people hear at times. Everyone seems to be in agreement it's a great summer album, summer is round the corner.

Maybe cos it doesn't sound like FN that isn't what people wanted.

I heard she wrote 97 songs and only picked 11 to put on this album. Tell her to release a deluxe edition with at least five more tunes.

I only gave it one spin so far but only the singles she released are good. The rest of the album is forgettable.
